Itinerary

Join us on this seven-day, guided trip and reach the highest point in the African continent. The Machame route, also called the 'whiskey route', is one of the most popular routes used to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and our favourite as well. This route also has one of the highest summit success rates given the topography and nature of the route, which allows climbers to trek high and sleep low, hence making it a more favorable route for acclimatization.

In addition to higher chances of summit, the Machame route also offers some of the most spectacular scenery along the way to the top. It starts on the southwestern side of the mountain and proceeds steeply north, traversing the Shira Plateau and eventually joining Shira and Lemosho routes right after the Shira Cave Camp.

Although travelers can complete their journey to the top and back in six days using this route, adding a day more to the itinerary like we have done is recommended for the sake of acclimatisation.

day 1 - Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

The drive from Moshi to the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park Gate takes about 50 minutes. The journey passes through the village of Machame which is located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

Leave the park gate behind and walk through the rain forest on a winding trail up a ridgee. The trail in this section can be muddy and slippery. Therefore, we recommend using gaiters and trekking poles. Your day comes to an end on reaching Machame Camp.

day 2 - Machame Camp – Shira Camp

Leave the rainforest behind after breakfast and continue on an ascending path, crossing a small valley. Walk along a steep, rocky ridge covered with heathers. The route now turns west towards a river gorge. Time for rest, dinner and overnight at Shira Camp.

day 3 - Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

Continue up a ridge to the east from the Shira Plateau, trekking past the junction towards the peak of Kibo. The direction now changes to the southeast, towards the Lava Tower.

You will find yourself in a second junction shortly after the tower, which brings you up to the Arrow Glacier located at an elevation of around 4876 metres. Your journey comes to an end on reaching Barranco Hut, located 3962 metres above sea level. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important in terms of acclimatisation and will help your body prepare for the summit day.

day 4 - Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp

Leave Barranco after breakfast and continue on a steep ridge passing the Barranco Wall to reach the Karanga Valley campsite. This is a short day meant for acclimatisation.

day 5 - Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp

Leave Karanga after breakfast and hit the junction that connects with the Mweka Trail. Continue your journey up to Barafu Hut. At this point, you would have completed the South Circuit, which offers views of the summit from many different angles. Prepare the camp, take rest and enjoy your dinner. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo can be seen from this position.

day 6 - Barafu Camp – Kilimanjaro Summit – Mweka Hut

Wake up between midnight to 2:00 am and continue your way to the summit. Head in the northwestern direction and ascend through a heavy scree towards the Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek.

Stop for a short rest at the Stella Point and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see (depending on the weather). You will encounter snow from here all the way to the summit.

Summit Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. Your descent from the summit continues straight down to the Mweka Hut campsite, with a stop en route at Barafu for lunch.

You might want to use your gaiters and trekking poles while descending down this route due to the presence of loose gravels. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest region of the mountain and hence mist or rain can be expected late in the afternoon. Enjoy your last dinner in the mountain later in the evening followed by a well-earned sleep.

day 7 - Mweka Camp – Moshi

Continue your journey down the mountain after breakfast to reach Mweka Park Gate where you will receive your summit certificates. It can get wet in the lower elevation and the trail can be muddy. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (we recommend that you keep rain gear and warmer clothes handy).

Hike for another hour from the gate to reach Mweka Village, where a vehicle will meet you and drive you back to hotel in Moshi.
