A fascinating and active cycle trip from Bangkok to Old Saigon on moderate grade rides
Cycle through the jungle between the grand temples of Angkor
Boats and bikes along the labyrinthine waterways of the mighty Mekong Delta
Very enjoyable and well organised. We were well looked after. A varied and interesting itinerary. The accommodation was great with the exception of the first hotel which was a bit 'dated'.
We had a fantastic trip with explore! Starting with a brief intro to Thailand with professional friendly experienced guides Koi, Tri and the fab support Team (Bus driver, cycle team-always smiling and helpful!) travelling through the local back streets of Bangok and the waterways around the city, seeing the impressive Temples and Grand Palace through to the border of Cambodia. This is where we met are new guides Sum (bursting with enthusiasm, knowledge and fun), Seda (knowledgeable, humble and kind) and another great support Team (Bus Driver, cycle supporters-smiling and helpful) our guides provided an amazing insight into the kind and humble people of Cambodia, the interesting culture and history, with beautiful scenery and impressive historical sites of the Angkor's temples onto the border of the Vietnamese Mekong River Delta. Our professional, friendly guide Huan and new support Team (bus driver and cycle supporters (friendly and helpful as always!) who had been with us throughout the tour ensuring each day ran smoothly, from hotels, bikes/cycling needs, sight seeing, transfers, to additional ideas/options which made for an amazing dive session on Phu Quoc island, much appreciation to Huan and all the Team for a most memorable and always treasured adventure.🫶🚲
Main explore leader was caring and thoughtful. He understood our concerns and never treated anyone more "special" than anyone else. The local leaders could have been more professional and mature. The hotels were mostly good, except for the Royal Rattanakosin Hotel, which is one of the worst hotels ever. Other reviews have agreed with this. Why does Explore continue to use them??? It would have been nice if the app had more detail about our itinerary as we got closer to the riding dates. More precise information on the app would have helped.
Fantastic first trip with Explore! We loved every moment - lots packed into the 2 weeks including culture, food, drinks and cycling! The tour leader Hoan was brilliant- he managed the group really well, and couldn't have been any more accommodating to the group. The cycling distances each day allowed us to explore enough without feeling too much, especially in the heat. The pace was steady and no one was left behind. All of the accommodation was spot on in terms of location, cleanliness and staff. The Bangkok hotel was a tad dated and would be my only change of the holiday. Cannot wait to book my next trip with Explore!
This was a great way to see a lot of SE Asia in two weeks: as well as three major cities and a spectacular World Heritage site, cycling the back streets and rural roads allowed us to get fully immersed in all three countries. Hoan was an excellent tour leader, making a logistically complex tour feel seamless, and the trip was supported by excellent local bike crews, guides and drivers.
Cycling tour was very short on distances, I thought we could have done more each day without impacting on the itinerary of the visits to places of interest. Some days I thought that the cycling was done just to fill in gaps
A very enjoyable trip. "Moderate" seems an appropriate rating for the cycling - easy for a regular cyclist and doable for a reasonably fit occasional cyclist. The routes were interesting, predominately on quiet rural roads. Accomodation was mostly excellent with the exception of the hotel in Bangkok and Ha Tien (the latter is closing for refurbishment). Angkor Wat was the expected highlight but I also enjoyed just cycling through the countryside, observing a different way of life. There were plenty of diversions to add variety to the cycling - the floating village, boat trip on the bird reserve, temple visits etc. The guides and tour leader were all excellent as usual and looked after us well. If time allows I'd recommend doing a scooter tour in Saigon!
From booking to leaving for the tour Explore gave all the information needed. The tour guide Hoan was amazing throughout the tour A truly once in a lifetime trip!
In general the itinerary was very good but in some places the cycling could have been made more interesting. Our guide Lan was excellent and the bike support team were best in Thailand but not so good in Cambodia and Vietnam (the latter were a new team apparently). With a couple of exceptions all hotels and food were very good - those in Bankok and Ha Tien not so good. Days were full on and quite long - did not always get time to try the hotel pool at the end of the day! Amount of cycling about right (around 400km in 2 weeks) - very hot and humid when we went in October / November. Be prepared to see quite a lot of poverty and markets selling many 'interesting' foods with very little refrigeration!
This trip was everything we could have wished for and more. We would recommend this to anyone who wants a brilliant balance between seeing and doing! Thank you to our incredible tour guide Hoan who ensured we felt safe, relaxed and comfortable throughout the duration of the trip! Cambodia was a true highlight with beautiful scenery, incredible people and excellent cycling. Vietnam offered variation and we loved the home stay! We will definitely be looking to look at future cycling trips with explore!
