About Libby

I grew up in Guilin, China — a city where mountains greet you at the door and rivers flow past your window. That kind of childhood planted an early curiosity in me about the world beyond. As a child, I often tagged along when my father's foreign friends came to visit. I loved showing them my favourite places and explaining the world I lived in, recommending things to see and do. I thought of them as part of the family, and that is really where it began. My interest in tourism goes far beyond a job description — it is a passion. I love what I do and I do what I love. I also studied for it, so that the passion rests on solid professional ground. In 2004, I officially entered the travel industry as an English-speaking local guide, leading travellers from around the world across China. I later worked as a national escort guide and an outbound tour leader, covering more than 100 Chinese cities and taking groups to Southeast Asia, Europe and the United States. In those years I was both a storyteller and a listener. Every tour reaffirmed one truth: the most beautiful part of travel is rarely the scenery itself — it is the people you meet and the moments you share along the way.

Today I channel two decades of frontline experience into my role as a product manager. My job is no longer to design a single itinerary, but to build an entire online experience that makes travel simpler. I know how guides think, what travellers worry about and where local operators tend to stumble — because I have genuinely stood in every one of those positions. I turn my own experience, and the pitfalls I have run into, into the small details of product design. A good product should be like a trusted friend who knows travel inside out: quietly taking care of everything, so that you can relax and truly enjoy the journey.

Best Travel Experience

Cycling with a British family along the Yulong River One spring, I took a British family of four to Yangshuo and arranged a day of cycling along the Yulong River. Before we set off, I marked out a rural path that followed the water — bypassing the tour buses and main routes, winding through villages, across field ridges and over a few old stone bridges. The weather was beautiful that day, with a thin layer of morning mist still lingering over the river. Halfway through the ride, we stopped to rest under a large banyan tree by the roadside. An elderly local woman was sitting beneath it shelling beans, several bottles of homemade osmanthus sugar water beside her. I bought one for each of my guests and chatted with her in the Guilin dialect — she spoke no Mandarin. Curious about what we were saying, the family asked me to translate. I said, "She thinks you're amazing for having cycled so far." At that, the gentleman smiled, pulled a packet of British biscuits from his bag and shared them with the old woman and me. In that moment I felt something wonderful: an elderly woman from Guilin with no English, and a British family with no Chinese, had somehow completed an exchange under that tree, straight across the language barrier. They exchanged only a few words, but everyone was smiling. After the ride, the gentleman wrote a sentence on the feedback form that I have remembered ever since: "Today I didn't just see Guilin. I met it." That trip has shaped how I think about my work. I design itineraries, refine processes and write page copy — but the point of all of it should be exactly that moment, when someone in an unfamiliar place feels they haven't merely passed through, but have truly met it. I can't turn the old lady under the banyan tree into a product. What I can do is leave a little unscheduled time in every itinerary I design — a route with room to wander off it.
