First, we spend a few days in Mikumi National Park, which lies alongside the Northern border of Africa's biggest Game Reserve - the Selous Game Reserve. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the fashionable centerpiece of Mikumi, draw frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains. More than 400 bird species were recorded, the lilac-breasted rollers, yellow-throated longclaws, and bateleur eagles joined by a host of European migrants during the rainy season.
Next, we visit Ruaha National Park, the second-largest national park in Tanzania which covers an area of about 22,000 km². At 2,600km², Tarangire is far from being the biggest of the Tanzanian parks, but its unrivaled landscape of open plains, dotted with thousands of baobabs, is unforgettable. At about 120kms south of Arusha, Tarangire is known for its tree-climbing lions and for its very big herds of buffalo. The game numbers are staggering and include 30,000 zebra, 25,000 wildebeest, 5,000 buffalo, 3,000 elephants, 2,500 Maasai giraffe,s and over 1,000 fringe-eared oryx. Predators include lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Birders will want to look out for the endemic ashy starling, Rufous-tailed Weaver, and Black-collared lovebird.
At 8 am we depart from Arusha town to Tarangire National Park. The tour ends back in Arusha at around 5 pm. Lunch is included.
