Travel back in time to the days of the Knights Templar with this 8-hour, guided tour. Join us as we visit some of the most important monuments associated with one of the most intriguing and enigmatic military orders the world has ever seen. The order of the Knights Templar was founded at the beginning of the 12th century for the protection of the Holy Sepulchre and of Christian pilgrims on their way to the Holy land.
We will pick you up at your hotel or accommodation in Lisbon and drive you to the Convent of Christ, originally a Templar stronghold that later became a Roman Catholic convent after this military order ceased to exist in the 14th century. Explore the convent and learn more about the history of the Templars.
Also see the magnificent castle of Almourol, a medieval castle atop an islet in the middle of the River Tagus. This castle was part of the defensive line of the Templars and acted as their stronghold during the Portuguese Reconquista.
Get the chance to enjoy queijinhos do ceu, a traditional Portuguese sweet, along the way. We will drop you off at your hotel or accommodation after the trip is over.
Did you know that Vilamoura is one of the largest tourist complexes in Europe? Tourists mainly come to Vilamoura to play golf, stay at the high-quality hotels, or visit the beaches and bars, but there is so much more to discover and enjoy! Join us on a bicycle tour of this fabulous place.
The tour starts heading in the direction of the foundation of Vilamoura, Museum Cerro da Vila. Vilamoura has ancient Roman origins from the 1st century AD. Muslims were also present in this area and they left their mark as well. This can be seen in the Cerro da Vila Museum. After that, we will cross the Marina of Vilamoura, one of the best Yacht Clubs in Europe.
Then, we will bike on the path of the dunes to get to Quarteira. Here we can find one of the main attractions not to be missed while visiting Quarteira, the splendid fish and fruit market. Quarteira was founded in 1916 and is known for its fish, beaches and regional pastries. The art of fishing is well known and very much appreciated here and has become a tourist attraction. We will continue the tour by biking next to the beach, only 1 meter away from us as we cycle. Can you feel the sea breeze on your face?
The next stop is the Old Village. The architecture here is inspired by the Portuguese architecture of the 19th century, that's why it's called the Old Village. The pedestrian streets are paved with the typical Portuguese cobblestones and the gardens are very well kept.
Many people don't know that there is a beautiful environmental park in the heart of Vilamoura, but it really exists! You can explore the park on foot or by bike. In the park, you can see sheep, horses (as a horse stable, Centro Hípico, is located nearby), storks and other bird species.
We then head back to Bike a Wish via the bike lanes, however, we will not skip the Vilamoura Casino!
Cycle to the Almada e Cristo Rei statue, overlooking Lisbon city center, on a 3-hour electric bike tour of the southern neighborhoods. Cross the Tagus River, and let your bike take the strain as you climb to the outstetched arms of Christ the King.
Meet your group at Praça Martim Moniz for a safety briefing on how the bikes work. Then, bike to the large commercial square of Praça da Figueira, and learn about its mercantile past. Continue along Ruas dos Douradores, passing the site where the poet Fernando Pessoa got the inspiration for his book “Livro do Desassossego.” Admire the ironwork lift of the Santa Justa Elevator en route to Praça Comércio, Lisbon’s largest square.
Next, discover the recent developments of Ribeira das Naus, the former shipyard area where many of the Portuguese ships that set sail to discover new worlds were built. Upon arrival at Cais do Sodré, take the orange cacilheiro (ferry) across the River Tagus. Once on the south bank, cycle through the Cais do Ginjal, a former warehouse that used to supply bait and ice to the cod fishing boats of the North Seas.
Next, take the Boca do Vento lift to get closer to the statue of Christ the King, or cycle up the hill with no sweat on your electric bike! Enjoy magnificent views of Lisbon and the 25 of April Bridge. After a short coffee break in the botanic gardens of Casa da Cerca, climb to the top of the Sanctuary of Christ the King for the best view of the city.
Bike back down hill towards the river, and explore the narrow streets of Almada. Visit the Medieval Museum to see relics of Islamic life in Portugal in the Middle Ages. Then, cross the river again to return to the meeting point and the end of the tour.
