The arrival of spring sees the weather across Italy in April take a giant leap forward, although heavy showers are still known to occur in central regions including Rome. Ski slopes remain open until the second half of the month but are now far from their best with snow and ice starting to melt. Temperatures of 16 to 18°C even in northern Italy make it a pleasant time of year to absorb the street life, while 20 to 25°C is not uncommon in the far south and Sicily. Coastal areas, however, are a couple of degrees cooler.

Spring flowers, warmer temperatures, and festivities combine with the tail end of the low season to make Italy in April a good all-round choice for visitors looking to explore everything the country can offer, from museums to vistas. Below are just some reasons to consider spending April in Italy.

  • Reopening of hiking trails: The end of the ski season marks the start of the hiking period, with high passes in the Apennines and the Alps joining the trails along the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre as places to spend a couple of days hiking in.
  • Fewer crowds: April strikes the perfect balance between enjoyable weather and fewer crowds. While popular destinations like Florence, Venice, and Rome start to see more visitors, they are still far less crowded than in peak summer months, allowing you to experience Italy’s attractions at a relaxed pace.
  • Beautiful blossoms and landscapes: April is when Italy’s countryside and cities burst into color. Cherry blossoms, wisteria, and tulips bloom in full glory, making gardens, parks, and villas especially scenic. Popular spots like Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast are breathtaking in spring, offering postcard-worthy views and vibrant floral displays.
  • Celebrations and festivities: In addition to Easter, April is also the month of the Design Week in Milan, Saint Mark’s Day in Venice, and the Founding of Rome Day in the capital. Each of these offers its own unique insights into Italian culture.
