Indonesia is a tropical paradise and one of the hottest destinations in the world right now. You could spend weeks (or a lifetime) surfing the waves on the beaches of Bali or diving off the coast of the Gili Islands. Jakarta - a bustling, vibrant city - has excellent food tours offering a taste of local cuisine, while Komodo Island is a truly unique piece of nature.

Indonesia Highlight

What makes Indonesia unique compared to other destinations in Asia?

Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 islands, offering extraordinary cultural, linguistic, and natural diversity. From tropical beaches and active volcanoes to lush jungles and world-class diving spots, the country blends nature with deeply rooted traditions. Different religions — Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, and local beliefs coexist harmoniously, creating a rare and diverse cultural experience across the region.

Indonesia's Hidden Gem

One lesser-known, off-the-beaten-path destination in Indonesia and why it is special?

Wakatobi (Southeast Sulawesi) is a remote paradise known for pristine coral reefs, crystal-clear waters, and exceptional marine biodiversity. Still largely untouched by tourism, it offers tranquility, authenticity, and world-class diving, ideal for travelers seeking nature, privacy, and untouched beauty far from Bali and Komodo.

Indonesian Way of Life

What are some key cultural insights you think travelers should know before arriving in Indonesia?

Indonesia values politeness, respect, and harmony. Dress modestly in traditional or religious areas, remove shoes before entering temples and homes, and avoid using the left hand for greetings or passing objects. Stay calm, avoid heated discussions about religion or politics, and always be respectful of local customs and sacred spaces.

Tips for Indonesia Travel

Are there any common mistakes travelers make when visiting Indonesia that they could avoid?

Thinking Indonesia has one culture (each island is unique), disregarding temple etiquette, underestimating travel time between islands, drinking tap water, and not planning early during peak seasons like July–August and December. Respect traditions, stay hydrated safely, and plan logistics in advance for smooth travel.

13 Fun Things to Do in Ubud
13 Fun Things to Do in Ubud
Having gained fame as a setting for the film Eat, Pray, Love; Ubud is recognized by many as Bali’s cultural heart. A flourishing crafts center boasting hundreds of shops and studios selling everything from antique wood carvings to locally-made jewelry, it sits in the cool mountains just an hour north of the island’s airport. Also home to spectacular landscapes and fascinating historic and cultural sights, you’ll find a huge number of things to do in Ubud. The 13 on our list are open daily.
Pura Tanah Lot: The Sea Temple
Pura Tanah Lot: The Sea Temple
The coastal temple Pura Tanah Lot is located in the southern part of Bali, North West of popular southern destinations like Kuta and Seminyak. It is vastly known as a destination for epic photography. This cultural icon is among the seven sea temples located in the coast of Bali and has been contained in Balinese mythology for centuries. The temple continues to stand strong today, although it has had its fair share of aging, as back in the 80's the temple started to crumble and about one third of the rocks at the base of the temple had to be replaced with artificial rocks. For those who aren't aware of it's cultural representation, Pura Tanah Lot might just be another ancient ruin to mindlessly gaze at, but Tanah Lot is a place to be held in high esteem and regards, as the temple serves as an important temple dedicated to the sea god as well as a great place to witness Bali’s famous sunsets.
Lembongan Island: Day Trip from Bali
Lembongan Island: Day Trip from Bali
Lembongan Island is a small, lush strip of land set off Bali’s southeast coast. It is one of a trio of islands made up of Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Penida, and compact Nusa Ceningan. The Badung Strait separates the three islands from Bali. On Lembongan Bali, you’ll discover languid white sandy beaches, fabulous snorkeling and diving amidst a myriad of sea life and flourishing coral reefs and serious surfing, all set in a chilled island-type vibe. If you and your family are in search of a more sedate and unhurried pace of life for your vacation, or you are looking for an intimate location for a honeymoon; Lembongan will welcome you with open arms.

Indonesia Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Indonesia tours

Colin | Traveled in May

The Bali, Flores and Komodo Islands tour is suitable for active travellers who enjoy wonderful views, nature, discovering culture, photography, swimming and good food. Our excellent guide - Anton - was always willing to stop the vehicle for us to catch a view and a picture as we passed by some stunning views. You're staying in a combination of basic and good hotels and a night and two days on a boat. (Ours had bathrooms in each cabin.) We travelled by boat between the islands of Rinca and Komodo with reasonably basic accommodation, but excellent food. This part of the trip provided ample opportunity to walk (guided by a Ranger) and see at close quarters the famous dragons. We managed to see 13 between 2m and 3m across two walks. As a diver I really enjoyed the snorkelling off the islands was very good with an excellent selection of coral, plenty of turtles and fish. There is also a chance to snorkel with Manta Rays at one of the top 3 spots in the world to see these beasts. Unfortunately, during our visit the Mantas were missing, but I did get close to perhaps a dozen Green and Hawksbill turtles. Back in Flores and Bali the fish markets sold and cooked on the spot beautiful fresh fish at a fraction of the cost you might pay in the UK. An opportunity to visit two functioning megalithic villages built from bamboo, thatch and stone was fascinating. If you like expansive views of lush green rice terraces Bali and Western Flores. Elsewhere, you'll walk through growths of vanilla, papaya, Jack fruit, Cocoa and heaven knows what else. Our guide Anton was excellent, knowledgeable, flexible and unstoppable. I'd highly recommend this trip.

the days we had to tour were brilliantly done, informative and insightful... however, recommendations, could be offered by guides for days off, choices other than being on the beach...hotels had few brochures to help us decide...and transport offered by hotels had plenty of departuretimes to a few destinations but pick up times were only at the end of a long, hot day

It was an amazing trip with the best contiki trip manager! Couldn't have asked for a better trip and first time overseas. Made a heap of friends, did almost all the add on activities which I couldn't recommend doing enough! Learnt some of the local language and really got immersed in it all! Only thing with dietary requirements is it makes pre ordering meals very difficult as most menus don't say what is gluten/dairy free or not and next time I would take a card saying dietary requirements in the local language so they can understand

The trip was action packed with something for everyone. The included itinerary and the add on activities truly showcased the best of Balis culture, cuisine and warm hospitality. Our trip manager and local guide were extremely knowledgeable and were fully engaged with our tour group for the whole week. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend this trip!

My TruTavel Bali Experience

My holiday to Bali was absolutely incredible. The trip was so well organised, and I genuinely don’t think I could have had such a fun, seamless, and authentic experience without our amazing guide, Ovinda. We started in Canggu, diving straight into the hustle and bustle with fantastic dinners and nightlife that instantly bonded the group. During our free time, Ovinda even organised a ring-making class within minutes — a thoughtful gesture that saved us endless scrolling and left me with a beautiful, personal souvenir. Next, we headed to Ubud, where the scenery was breathtaking and the experiences unforgettable. The Balinese cooking class was a standout (the food was incredible!), and visiting the Monkey Forest was both fun and fascinating. Ovinda took the time to explain the temples and their cultural significance — something she did at every destination with genuine passion and insight. Climbing Mount Batur on my birthday was an absolute highlight. Watching the sunrise from the summit was nothing short of magical. We followed it with a visit to the rice terraces, where I captured my “money shot” on the famous swing — a true bucket-list moment! On Gili Trawangan, we swam in crystal-clear waters, ate delicious local food, and cycled around the island — a simple yet perfect way to explore. Ovinda even surprised me with a birthday cake, making the day feel extra special and heartwarming. From start to finish, the trip was flawlessly organised. The hotels were top quality, the itinerary balanced adventure and relaxation perfectly, and every personal recommendation from Ovinda was spot on. She kept us safe, well cared for, and always smiling — whether we were enjoying a Bintang or unwinding with a massage. The friendships formed and memories made over those ten days will stay with me forever. It truly was the trip of a lifetime — all thanks to and the wonderful Ovinda.
