Good trip with very good guide who provided useful and potentially important information on how both to get ready for walking in the mountains as well as the actual walking itself. Really excellent in that respect. Two concerns: i)Use of mountain huts one of which had very basic facilities. I have mixed feelings on this. On the positive side it provides excellent access to the high mountains; on the negative side I found it virtually impossible to sleep and had to miss one of the walks as a result. Not sure what the solution is but needs thinking about. ii)I do not like Explore’s habit of offering discounts (big in this case) to latecomers (but not to earlier bookers) where a holiday has vacancies. I know airlines do this but the relationship between the user and the product is much closer on these holidays. In the short run it may work to Explore’s advantage; in the long run I am not sure. I certainly have no intention of booking an Explore holiday again until pretty close to the departure date.
A great 5 days hiking in the Transylvanian Alps! Beautiful scenery and excellent views from the tops. Our guide Robin was excellent - very knowledgeable and did a great job looking after the group. Also really enjoyed our trips to Peles and Bran Castles and the National Village Museum in Bucharest.
Beautiful trip with knowledgeable guide. Walking over the first saddle with the cows and the ringing bells was very very special. The views from the Ridgeline were absolutely gorgeous, as was the gorge. Parts felt a bit rushed, especially the Bucharest time but understandable with the larger group in busy places. It's well worth having a couple of extra days in Bucharest to experience the city. Overall an amazing trip. Lots of delicious food, and fantastic with catering for gluten free across the whole trip! The Guide was fantastic for communicating with the locals, organizing everything and ensuring tips were taken care of. Fantastic to have so much additional information for all of the places we visited as well as for the walks themselves.
Explore organise and run their trips extremely well. The itinerary is used regularly and the guides are very knowledgeable. The trek was as described although I made the length longer with my recordings and the hours of hiking longer each day but we were a big group so we stopped often enough route. We have had Explore before and would travel with them again
Brilliant guide. Very competent and professional. Super helpful and spoke v good English. A challenging few days. More so than expected. Good level of fitness required. Unforgettable experience
The outline of the holiday provided in advance was incorrect. The holiday was - not moderate/strenuous, rather it was strenuous - a longer treck than advertised, 15km hike was 20km (an additional 1,5/2 hrs) It is key that the correct details are provided to allow those booking plan accordingly. Robbin the leader was exceptional, providing excellent insight into Romania, culture , life & history. His mountain leadership was great too - very confident and competent. He was however tyring his best to justify EXPLORE mis-truths in their brochure. This I find unacceptable, and makes me very uneasy about booking with EXPLORE in the future.
Some excellent walking, and a very able and committed guide. The itinerary tried to pack in additional sights (caves, castles etc) which lengthened already long days however. Explore should make it even clearer that this trek requires a reasonable level of fitness and stamina - several group members struggled with the hiking, slowing others down and extending days way beyond their expected duration.
Good tour but i was the only man and the others were older. Good atmosphere in the group and everyone was in good shape with the right equipment
Wow! I what beautiful nature on this trip. The trip was listed as moderate to challenging and it was! I so be in shape and bring poles. We added up the hike and In 5 days 70 km walk 3306 m elevation gain 4448 m descent ⛰️ Down was the hardest. We climbed a ridge and saw spectacular views. The we managed to see a bear-rare, red deer and tree frog. Flowers were still blooming. The huts were nice and the accommodated. My dietary issues. It was like camping at one hut because no indoor plumbing. Our tour guide Tudor exudes knowledge and confidence and that made all the difference. Romania is safe and beautiful and a place to visit. I highly recommend this tour... Just pack light as you carry your pack most days to get to huts
Just back from the Transylvanian Alps trek and can easily recommend this trek for anyone looking for a little bit of adventure away from the more frequented mountain destinations. We were fortunate to have two fantastic guides on our trek, with the primary guide being Răzvan, an extremely experienced guide who demonstrated a fascinating knowledge of the mountains and local history, and we were also joined by his wife Lisa, who was part-way through her training as a trekking guide (with a wealth of experience in all kinds of outdoor pursuits including running, climbing, scuba diving etc) - she will definitely be an excellent guide for future Explore treks! Each evening, the following day's activities were laid out, with expectations set and questions answered. The trekking was done at what I would consider a fairly relaxed pace, but always enjoyable, and we were lucky to have a good group. The routes varied from gently short hikes (day 1) to longer hikes (day 2) with a bit more ascent (day 3) and ridge walks with some mild scrambling on day 3 (plus an optional one on day 4). Accomodation varied wildly from comfortable hotels (first and last nights, a lovely little guesthouse in Moieciu (nights 3 & 6), and a pair of mountain huts - one with showers and plumbed toilets (night 2) and another with outside drop toilets, and just a pipe from a local spring supplying the running water. All were fairly comfortable - though while we had gender-specific dorms in the mountain hut on night 2, we (7 fermales, 4 males) were in a single shared dorm those nights. Food was generally good throughout the trip - a few meals out in local restaurants in Bucharest on the first and last evenings, with locally prepared meals during the rest of the trip. Lunches were mostly a mix of whatever the group carried on each hike, with the guides giving us a bag of fruit, vegetables and snacks to carry, plus a selection of bread, meats, cheeses and tins/spreads which we carried as a shared load amongst the group - do try and leave a bit of room spare in your pack so you can help with this! The only part I wasn't so keen on was the final day - a few hours in the bus, then an open air museum (in mid-30-40c temps), then spending a lot of time in traffic in the city with a small tour in part of the old town in the same heat. It was fascinating to hear Răzvan's experiences during the Ceaușescu era, but by the time we got back to the hotel (around 3pm), we had not had any lunch, and any plans for lunch had disappeared, so we just went off and did our own thing - it just seemed a bit messy. I think this trip could be shortened down to just the hiking days, and let people just arrange their own city activities/extensions if desired. The other thing I would mention is the kit list. A lot of the items on that list just were not necessary for this trek - at least certainly not at this time of the year. I ended up leaving my insulated jacket, hat & gloves in my main luggage, and I regretted not taking trail runners or (non-waterproof) hiking shoes instead of boots - it was just too warm for such items, even at altitude. I'd recommend amending the kitlist to note different recommendations based on the time of year.
There are three nights in mountain huts, where the accommodation is basic (no shower, no flush toilet), but that's unavoidable and part of the mountain experience. The ridge walk is amazing, but involves some scrambling and is exposed - not for those unhappy with heights, and the nature of the rock is such that it would not be safe in wet weather. We had warm sunshine. As the brochure indicates, the walking is strenuous, since you will be carrying up to 3 days food and clothing, as well as the usual stuff for a day on the hills. Good for botanists. The final day of the itinerary, in Bucharest, didn't work so well, not helped by unusual 40 deg heat. We didn't really see much of the city and it didn't allow for lunch at a sensible time. If you really want to see the city, you should add an extra day or two to your stay.
I very much enjoyed this trip and felt it was accurately described in the trip notes. The trekking days are long and there are challenging parts - in particular the ridge walk in the Piatra Craiului national park. The Accommodation was good and we we're always warmly welcomed everywhere we went. If you're physically fit and and want to see and enjoy Romania's beautiful scenery and a rich interesting history first hand then this is in my view is an excellent fast paced trip. I want to also thank our guide Robbin for his extensive local knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm.
This is quite a challenging trek and the distances were slightly more than the trip notes. Plenty of steep ups and downs and poles definitely needed. Having said that the scenery is stunning and the trip balanced well. The hut accommodation is pretty comfortable and warm and more of a hostel really with outdoor loos. The huts also provide crocs so no real need to carry spare footwear if you want to save weight and space in your day rucksack.
