Brilliant holiday to see many aspects of Turkey. Leader was professional and extremely knowledgable
Great trip if you want a fast paced view of what Turkey has to offer. You'll see the main cultural and historical sites, lots of interesting geography, get to swim in the sea and be looked after by a knowledgeable guide.
Excellent tour leader and a very busy and interesting tour. Only disappointment was the accommodation which was very 'hit and miss' and some was not up to standard expected.
The accommodation was below the standard i expected. In some locations it was poor. The standard of room seemed to be a lottery at the hotels and created an undercurrent of resentment on occasion. Rooms should be standard for all.
Hotel accommodation was very poor Breakfast was poor in most of the hotels And the rooms were not very good
'Turkey in Depth' was exactly as billed - a fast-paced tour that takes in many of the must-see sights in western Turkey. It is full on, with early starts and long road journeys, but absolutely worth it. The success of the tour was down to our tour leader, Zafer, who looked after us at every stage, was mindful of the health issues some of us had and did his best to accommodate the different interests and dietary preferences within the group. We tested his patience at times, but he has a good sense of humour and ensured everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time. His English is reasonably fluent, albeit accented, and he took care to repeat important information about the arrangements for the tour. When we were on the road, it would have been helpful (and safer) if there had been a microphone on the minibus to avoid Zafer having to get out of his seat as the vehicle was moving to talk to the group. As an archaeologist, with a PhD on Greek and Roman sarcophagi, Zafer is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Turkey's past and was an excellent guide to the many historical sites we visited. He gave us the historical and cultural background of each place and pointed out fascinating details relating to the architecture and artefacts, which added immensely to our understanding and appreciation of the things we saw. Our driver, Sami, was doing the tour for the first time, but coped really well with the long hours he spent behind the wheel. He has little English, but was always helpful and cheerful. He is a good driver and we felt completely safe in his hands. All the hotels we stayed in were of an acceptable standard - some had bigger rooms or better showers than others, some had some minor deficiencies, but nothing serious. We particularly liked the Kekova Hotel in Kas, which is a simple, homely hotel in a good location. One of the attractions of Turkey is its food and we had an opportunity to sample everything from street food to more up-market cuisine. In some locations, particularly in Anatolia, there were limited options for non-meat eaters, but there was plenty of fish available on the coast. The most memorable dinner we had was in Avanos, near Goreme, where we had testi kebabs - meat (trout in my case) cooked in sealed clay pots, served flaming at the table. Occasionally, the eateries were less than satisfactory - in Karahayit, near Pamukkale, for example, and on the road between Goreme from Ankara - but these were the exceptions. It is impossible to pick out a single highlight of the tour, there were so many - ranging from the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations in Ankara to our balloon flight over the astonishing landscape of Cappadocia, from the terraced houses of Ephesus to the turtles and rock tombs on the Dalyan River, and from the ruins of Aphrodisias and Troy to the travertine slopes of Pamukkale. If you want to see as much as possible of Turkey in two weeks, we can strongly recommend 'Turkey in Depth'.
Nice trip but found all the time was spent on the bus or visiting ruins…No time to explore towns or villages…I love ruins but in the end did not want to see another one… About explore….this was my first time travelling with them, was quoted a price for an extra night in the start hotel and was given a price twice I payed directly with hotel, same with transfers, was quoted £130 for a one way airport hotel, that could be booked for £35 on booking.com…Just wondering now if the tour was overpriced….
Fantastic holiday, saw so many interesting and varied sites. As per trip notes, it’s certainly full on with a lot of driving so don’t underestimate that - up to 7 hours on some days, with stops along the way- ten of us in a large, comfortable coach so plenty of room to spread out. Hotels were a mixed bag but ok - I had to change rooms in two of them for various reasons. Stone House in Capadoccia was the best. Guide- Mehmet- was excellent- learned a huge amount about the sites and Turkey from him. Funny, very helpful. Trip notes need updating- I really wanted to go to Xantos on the free day but it’s a long way- very expensive by taxi. Mehmet suggested Patala which I can recommend. He also made an unscheduled stop for us at Xantos the following day, as it was on the way. Food very good- I’m a vegetarian but Mehmet made sure there were always options for us. Great trip- highly recommend it!
Mostly all good. Some of the food experiences were not good - the “picnic” breakfast from the hotel in Cappadocia and the food at the Lycus River Hotel. Very underwhelming. Guide was great and we had a very skilled bus driver.
Our tour leader, Alkan, was very hard working and went over and above to meet any individual and diverse needs.
A good itinerary - I felt that I saw a lot of archeological sites, learned a lot about the history and experienced the culture. Felt like we skimmed the surface at a very fast pace - could have done with twice as long to do it justice - and we did only western Turkey. Kas, with a free day on the coast, was a nice change from ruins. We had several refreshing dips in the seas in various places. The hotels were generally better than I expected and 2 had pools. We would have preferred to be in Antalya old town than the characterless newer bit and the hotel in Istanbul is also in an uninteresting part. Good tour leader (Yusuf). Morose driver (can’t remember his name). We were unhappy with being asked for 2000 TL pp upfront on first evening to tip hotels and driver, none of whom did any more than they had been paid to do. Tour guide held back 10,000 TL of this, which he gave to the driver. We would not have chosen to tip the sullen, surly driver! Long bus journeys but broken up by site visits. Locantas - self service restaurants - were awful (tepid food that had been sitting around for hours). The one in Antalya was particularly bad. Final journey we had a very long coffee break where lunch options looked much better than the locanta at which we had already had lunch.
This tour kept us on the move with a full & busy programme that could be flexible when required. The hotels were consistently good. The only disappointment was that the evening meal locations & options were repetitive & sanitised. I felt I had to spend a lot of money on meals that I could have just been eating at home. Some more cultural meal experiences would enhance the trip.
A superb tour, fully lives up to the title “in depth”. Our tour leader was really excellent. Lots of kilometres covered, but in a comfortable air conditioned small coach for the tour group of nine.
Accommodation: All places were very well chosen. Clean, friendly, quiet and well placed from the itinerary point of view, also with good breakfast. Itinerary: In two weeks I think we covered much more that what other trip organizers do. It was really amazing what we have seen. Explore Leader: The Explore Leader was very competent, professional and his knowledge helped us understand the complicated history of all places we visited. The way he explained each place with its evolution was just perfect. He also solved all logistical problems of such a complicated tour. Explore made an excellent choice in selecting this particular Explore Leader.
Excellent trip with our guide Mehmet. Itinerary was very good and Mehmets suggestion of a cruise on our free day in Kas was brilliant
Our guide mehmid was excellent. Good sense of humor and gave us great information on all the sights and culture of turkey
The trip is full on as described, spending many hours on multiple days on a bus, however it’s a big country. The hotel in Cappadocia was great, as was our time there. Some of the hotels were below expected and with pretty unhelpful staff. The tour leader did a good organisational job and the driver was excellent. The other participants were friendly and considerate.
Excellent tour with Oz, an incredibly knowledgeable and caring tour guide. I would recommend this tour. We had only 7 in the group and were able to travel comfortably in a mini van. The only small critique I would have is I would liked to have something different added to the itinerary such as a cooking demonstration but the trip to the turtle sanctuary was great. Having a whole free day in Kas was excellent and the chance to do early morning balloon ride in Cappadocia was the highlight
Overall, a wonderful experience... but a few parts of the itinerary were disappointing. Day 2. Visit to Kadakoy was unnecessary. We were not shown anything of interest; it was just a hurried hike through the streets because it was, according to Zefir, "in the itinerary". We were given free time AFTER the return ferry ride. Had we been given our own ferry tickets, we could have used our free time to explore Kadakoy on our own. Instead we were set free where we'd already been. All but two of us took the tram back to the hotel; the other two going back to the spice market. Day 9. Zefir took us to Xanthos, which was lovely and should be included in the itinerary, but this meant no time for a lunch stop. Breakfast was at 7:45, we arrived in Dalyan at 1:30 to "pick up some pastries" before catching our boat at 2:00 - no option for protein, fruit, or veg. We had a full day Kas the day before and ALL OF US went to a supermarket. It would have been better to be told to "pack a lunch". The trip to the turtle hospital seemed pointless and like we were only there because it was in the itinerary. We were given about 20 minutes to look at the 6 turtles being rehabbed and to read the signs on the walls. No guide/staff member interacted with us. Having someone tell us about the hospital and conservation efforts would have been nice and might have encouraged more of us to donate - which I believe only one person did. I think we'd all have donated if a staff-member welcomed us and engaged with us as a group. Being reminded that we could donate in any currency before we got off the coach might have encouraged more donations as well. The hotel in Dalyan was nice, but the DINNER AT THE HOTEL WAS OVERPRICED for what was on offer AND POOR QUALITY (I don't think they have a chef... just the hotelier; we had the choice of fish, chicken, or lamb and had to decide 2 hours in advance of arriving at the hotel). None of us enjoyed our meal. All of the Turkish beer at the hotel was 5-6 months out of date. We saw so many restaurants on our return boat journey from the beach and saw the prices and food on offer at many of those restaurants on our walk back to the coach. Any of these would have been preferrable as a dinner option.
Much of the tour focussed upon Greco-Roman sites, but my highlight was the walk around Cappadocia with its stunning scenery. Whilst I recognise and accept that sites of interest are spread far and wide in this large country, the schedule was at times punishing, with many hours spent on the tour bus. Thankfully, Turkey has invested in its road infrastructure, the tour bus was spacious and our driver was superb. The tour guide, Yusuf, was both knowledgeable & informative of the sites and always helpful, particularly when dealing with a health emergency. Yusuf also ensured we had the option of a meal every evening at a local restaurant at a reasonable price.
Overall the trip was wonderful but I do think the itinerary needs a few extra days. There were many highlights such as Ephesus, Cappadocia, boat trip in Kas, Olympos. In general all the archeological sites were very interesting. Our leader Zafer was wonderful and was always explaining things to us and his food recommendations were spot on. We also went to places that weren't included in the trip notes - I especially appreciated this. The group was terrific - everyone was friendly and got on well together.
Good exposition to layers of history in Turkey. Also, it is pleasing to see Turkey is maintaining all sights in reasonably good state of repair. One issue that has bothered me in the last couple of trips is the proliferation of tipping requirements to all sorts of people e.g. hotel cleaners, breakfast staff and bell boys when you carry your own luggage almost every time. Explore need to compensate these sort of costs rather than put customers in awkward situations with the guides.
We have had a fantastic first-time experience with Explore Worldwide. The itinerary lived up to the description and the hotel accommodation was largely very good. We had an excellent guide - Ozegur - who was very knowledgeable, well organised, had a great sense of humour, and who gave us some very good recommendations for dinner. He was able to give real-time feedback to fix any accommodation issues on the spot. Our small group got along very well so we dined together every night and shared optional excursions. We got a terrific insight not only into the historic sites we visited but also into contemporary Turkish culture and society. The balloon ride over Cappadocia was a delight. There were so many highlights like Ephesus (magnificent!), Pergamon, Troy, the ruins of Olympos, the boat trip from Kekova to Xanthos, the Caravanserai, the Dervish mosque, we loved Goreme, Kas, and so much more. I’d certainly consider travel with Explore Worldwide again.
Great time, great leader and driver, great group but some observations for others to consider. This is a great tour if you really like archaeology! Zafer was very knowledgeable and organised, with many pictures on his phone. The tour was described as full on and it was! There was no time to decompress after days out - usually 30 minutes or less (no time to use the hotel pools, despite being mentioned every time!) We chose Explore partly because evening meals were not included, meaning we could do our own things, but then wecfound tour leader had arranged group meals most nights. We needn't have gone, but some hotels were too far from the centre of town to find anywhere else and/or we did not have the time. The group meals in the hotels lacked any atmosphere - the Stone Hotel was expensive and food poor; the Hotel Palme did at least have reasonable food. We were not given the chance of dessert or coffees after group meals. The Hotel Monaco in Istanbul was quite good overall, especially the location not far from a tram stop. The Grand Palace Hotel in Ankara was reasonable. The Stone Hotel in Cappadocia was very nice (apart from kitschy faux Classical architecture i.e. not "traditional" and too far from the centre. Ring Downtown Hotel, Antalya; quite nice Kekova Hotel in Kas nice but no lift Hotel Palme, Dalyan room a bit small perhaps but adequate Lycus River Hotel in Pamukkale poorly designed with too many steps and no lift. However, otherwise very nice; lovely big room with balcony. Pool, but no time to use it! Cenka Hotel, Selcuk; nice reception area, but lift very small Hotel in Canukkale very nice. Antalya - no tour of the Old Town and harbour as indicated in the programme. Walk to see the Chimaera good, but it would have been lovely to have been able to have a cold drink and brief sit down at the end. Pamukkale; were originally told we had 1.5 hours' free time and could visit the hot bath, but bath closed and 1.5 hours became 0.5 hour. Aphrodisias - no time to visit the shop, barely enough time to visit the WC! Ephesus - great to get an early start and beat the crowds, but tour too long (4 hours non-stop). No chance for a refreshment stop at the cafe part way round. "Ephesus Experience" very good, but seats or even some simple benches would have been welcome. Visit to Troy late afternoon/early evening was a lovely time of day; quieter and not too hot. Only real complaint is having to miss Gallipoli because of Anzac Day. It is the same day every year so there is no excuse for not realising or at least acknowledging that this visit would not be possible. But thank you for the visit to the British memorial and the chance to pay our respects.
There were some nice accommodations. Several fell short due to odors, noise, cleanliness, and lack of hot water.
The tour leader made the tour exceptional. His knowledge was astounding.. The itinerary was thorough and each location we visited was phenomenal.. There was alot of walking. My sisters and I are were fine with it. But you do need to be in shape as our average days were long Average day was about 12 hours
The whole trip exceeded my expectations, it was absolutely wonderful. Oz, our tour leader, was amazing in every way, very informative, in a way which was easily understandable, very kind always with a smile and sometimes even a song! Nothing was ever too much trouble for him, he was always available when needed, I thought he was an absolute superstar.!!! Many thanks 😊
My first Explore tour was really great!
This is a fantastic tour! Oz, our guide was very competent, caring and approachable. His dedication and knowledge made this trip very enjoyable. The group was very good and fun!
A great trip. A lot of ground covered. Tour notes had explained clearly that early starts were common and how much travel time was involved. Our modern, generously sized, coach and regular stops made it very comfortable. Our guide, Alcan Sisli, and driver, Attila, were of the high quality I expect from Explore! trips. Alcan was passionate about his country and extremely knowledgeable about all our points of interest. He took great care to include everyones wishes and needs when making plans and quickly knew us as individuals. He was unfailingly cheerful and looked after us all very competently, even when we perhaps did our own thing! We all got our turn to sit near the front of the coach to ask all those odd questions you might hesitate to ask in the whole group, though as usual the group, 12 in all, was such an interesting mix of backgrounds and personalities that it very soon felt as if we were just one big family. I miss them all now I'm home again! The accommodation was an eclectic mix of small city rooms to surprisingly luxurious bigger ones. All clean and with amazing buffet breakfasts. Food was varied - if sometimes a little solidly based on traditional Turkish meals. Fabulous fresh fish. Interesting 'greasy spoon' cafes with amazing dishes and the chance to try great local specialities. The attractions were as described - but even more spectacular in reality. The Mosques, Cotton Castle terraces, Rock formations and cave dwellings, Greco Romano remains etc were all fantastic and the final visit to Gallipoli was powerfully atmospheric. Our only disappointment was the unusually cold and wet weather during our particular trip dates but it didn't dampen our spirits and the only thing we couldn't do was the optional balloon flight. Another year perhaps. Now just got to sort out the 100s of photos and eat the Turkish Delight.
I recently returned from the Turkey in Depth tour, and I can’t say enough good things about the experience. Our guide, Oz, was exceptional—his knowledge of Turkish history, culture, and local secrets truly brought each destination to life. He was always ready to answer questions and went out of his way to make sure everyone was comfortable and enjoying themselves. Our driver, Ömer, was equally wonderful, navigating the roads with such skill and ease, making us feel safe and well-cared-for at every turn. The landscapes and historical sites were incredible, but it was really Oz and Ömer who made this trip unforgettable. They created a warm, friendly atmosphere and ensured everything ran smoothly, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of Turkey. This tour exceeded my expectations. The Explore Turkey in Depth tour itinerary was perfectly curated to showcase the rich history, diverse landscapes, and vibrant culture of Turkey. Each day brought a new highlight, from exploring the ancient ruins of Ephesus to the stunning natural beauty of Cappadocia. The balance between historical sites, breathtaking scenery, and authentic local experiences was spot on, giving us a true taste of the country’s depth and variety. The itinerary was thoughtfully paced, with just the right amount of time at each stop, so we never felt rushed. Highlights like Pamukkale’s thermal pools, the mystique of Troy, and the lively bazaars in Istanbul were unforgettable, and the seamless organization meant we could just relax and enjoy. This tour gave me a deep appreciation for Turkey, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a comprehensive and immersive experience! I highly recommend it to anyone looking to explore Turkey in depth!
Turkey is a beautiful country and I enjoyed seeing it, there were quite a few long days on the bus. I think Explore could tweak the itinerary to improve the trip. For example, on the day we travelled from Goreme to Antalya, despite departing early in the morning, we didn’t arrive in Antalya until late afternoon, it was dark for our visit to the old town. It looked like an interesting place, but it would be better to see it in daylight. The accommodation was average and some hotels we stayed at need updating, eg Grand Hamit, Cenka and Monaco. Our guide, Oz, was friendly and helpful and our Driver, Omar, was an excellent driver, and always friendly and smiling.
Our guide, Oz, was amazing - organized, helpful, funny, and so knowledgeable!!! Our driver, Omar (sp?) was excellent as well - helpful and a very capable driver! The tour was full on but we got to experience many different places. The accommodations were average, usually on the small side, but in convenient locations. I would recommend this tour
This was a brilliant tour with a comprehensive itinerary. It appealed to me and my husband for the historical content and our guide Oz was very helpful and knowledgeable with this. There are some long days of travel but the scenery is always interesting and they were well broken up with breaks. We felt completely confidant with both Oz for organisational aspects and our driver Omar who was excellent, driving safely and always cheerful and smiling. The accommodation was comfortable and generally teh food good. The final plus was the lovely group of people on this tour.
It was an enjoyable and informative trip and although it was described as full on I think more time to relax would have improved the experience.
We really enjoyed our trip and I would recommend it to others. The tour leader Zafer and the driver were both very good.Zafer had excellent knowledge of all the historical sites and went out of his way to make sure we were all happy and comfortable. Zafer organized group dinners for everyone and gave recommendations for activities and places to eat during free time.It was great meeting other travelers and greatly enhanced the experience.
This was more a whistle stop tour than seeing Turkey in depth. A lot of sitting on a coach travelling long distances. Very guide led trip with not much free time to explore independently. Wouldn’t do this type of holiday again. The frequent early morning starts were exhausting. Think Explore should look again at the itinerary. The guide Özgür was excellent. Knowledgable and quickly sorted out any problems which arose.
I compared multiple small group tours and, for the equivalent price, Explore is much better value. The hotels are better, the entry fees (which can really add up!) are all included, private comfortable minibus (no public transport) the entire trip, free airport shuttle if arriving or departing on the day the tour starts/ends. As advertised, the itinerary was jam packed and rated "full on" : that suited me, as I wanted to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. It is recommended that you book a few days on your own in Istanbul, as there's a lot to see. The hotels were comfortable and centrally located with a couple of fancy ones included. Breakfast was substantial in all hotels.. enough to keep you fueled for most of the day. My only minor complaint is the guide often suggested expensive tourist restaurants. I found cheaper, tastier and more authentic eateries on my own by doing prior research. One thing I really did like about this tour is that there were no forced shopping stops which are so prevalent with other tour companies. I would definitely consider Explore! Worldwide in the future!
“Leader” was dreadful. Tick box exercise getting through what he’s contracted to do. City tour of Istanbul finished at 12.30 !!!! He couldn’t do it quick enough. Itinerary was good - perhaps the brochure could emphasise lengthy coach drives more. Instead of departing 9am a lot of days I’d have prefer to go much earlier.
