Excellent tour leader and a very busy and interesting tour. Only disappointment was the accommodation which was very 'hit and miss' and some was not up to standard expected.
The accommodation was below the standard i expected. In some locations it was poor. The standard of room seemed to be a lottery at the hotels and created an undercurrent of resentment on occasion. Rooms should be standard for all.
Hotel accommodation was very poor Breakfast was poor in most of the hotels And the rooms were not very good
'Turkey in Depth' was exactly as billed - a fast-paced tour that takes in many of the must-see sights in western Turkey. It is full on, with early starts and long road journeys, but absolutely worth it. The success of the tour was down to our tour leader, Zafer, who looked after us at every stage, was mindful of the health issues some of us had and did his best to accommodate the different interests and dietary preferences within the group. We tested his patience at times, but he has a good sense of humour and ensured everyone had a thoroughly enjoyable time. His English is reasonably fluent, albeit accented, and he took care to repeat important information about the arrangements for the tour. When we were on the road, it would have been helpful (and safer) if there had been a microphone on the minibus to avoid Zafer having to get out of his seat as the vehicle was moving to talk to the group. As an archaeologist, with a PhD on Greek and Roman sarcophagi, Zafer is very knowledgeable about all aspects of Turkey's past and was an excellent guide to the many historical sites we visited. He gave us the historical and cultural background of each place and pointed out fascinating details relating to the architecture and artefacts, which added immensely to our understanding and appreciation of the things we saw. Our driver, Sami, was doing the tour for the first time, but coped really well with the long hours he spent behind the wheel. He has little English, but was always helpful and cheerful. He is a good driver and we felt completely safe in his hands. All the hotels we stayed in were of an acceptable standard - some had bigger rooms or better showers than others, some had some minor deficiencies, but nothing serious. We particularly liked the Kekova Hotel in Kas, which is a simple, homely hotel in a good location. One of the attractions of Turkey is its food and we had an opportunity to sample everything from street food to more up-market cuisine. In some locations, particularly in Anatolia, there were limited options for non-meat eaters, but there was plenty of fish available on the coast. The most memorable dinner we had was in Avanos, near Goreme, where we had testi kebabs - meat (trout in my case) cooked in sealed clay pots, served flaming at the table. Occasionally, the eateries were less than satisfactory - in Karahayit, near Pamukkale, for example, and on the road between Goreme from Ankara - but these were the exceptions. It is impossible to pick out a single highlight of the tour, there were so many - ranging from the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations in Ankara to our balloon flight over the astonishing landscape of Cappadocia, from the terraced houses of Ephesus to the turtles and rock tombs on the Dalyan River, and from the ruins of Aphrodisias and Troy to the travertine slopes of Pamukkale. If you want to see as much as possible of Turkey in two weeks, we can strongly recommend 'Turkey in Depth'.
Nice trip but found all the time was spent on the bus or visiting ruins…No time to explore towns or villages…I love ruins but in the end did not want to see another one… About explore….this was my first time travelling with them, was quoted a price for an extra night in the start hotel and was given a price twice I payed directly with hotel, same with transfers, was quoted £130 for a one way airport hotel, that could be booked for £35 on booking.com…Just wondering now if the tour was overpriced….
Fantastic holiday, saw so many interesting and varied sites. As per trip notes, it’s certainly full on with a lot of driving so don’t underestimate that - up to 7 hours on some days, with stops along the way- ten of us in a large, comfortable coach so plenty of room to spread out. Hotels were a mixed bag but ok - I had to change rooms in two of them for various reasons. Stone House in Capadoccia was the best. Guide- Mehmet- was excellent- learned a huge amount about the sites and Turkey from him. Funny, very helpful. Trip notes need updating- I really wanted to go to Xantos on the free day but it’s a long way- very expensive by taxi. Mehmet suggested Patala which I can recommend. He also made an unscheduled stop for us at Xantos the following day, as it was on the way. Food very good- I’m a vegetarian but Mehmet made sure there were always options for us. Great trip- highly recommend it!
Mostly all good. Some of the food experiences were not good - the “picnic” breakfast from the hotel in Cappadocia and the food at the Lycus River Hotel. Very underwhelming. Guide was great and we had a very skilled bus driver.
Our tour leader, Alkan, was very hard working and went over and above to meet any individual and diverse needs.
A good itinerary - I felt that I saw a lot of archeological sites, learned a lot about the history and experienced the culture. Felt like we skimmed the surface at a very fast pace - could have done with twice as long to do it justice - and we did only western Turkey. Kas, with a free day on the coast, was a nice change from ruins. We had several refreshing dips in the seas in various places. The hotels were generally better than I expected and 2 had pools. We would have preferred to be in Antalya old town than the characterless newer bit and the hotel in Istanbul is also in an uninteresting part. Good tour leader (Yusuf). Morose driver (can’t remember his name). We were unhappy with being asked for 2000 TL pp upfront on first evening to tip hotels and driver, none of whom did any more than they had been paid to do. Tour guide held back 10,000 TL of this, which he gave to the driver. We would not have chosen to tip the sullen, surly driver! Long bus journeys but broken up by site visits. Locantas - self service restaurants - were awful (tepid food that had been sitting around for hours). The one in Antalya was particularly bad. Final journey we had a very long coffee break where lunch options looked much better than the locanta at which we had already had lunch.
This tour kept us on the move with a full & busy programme that could be flexible when required. The hotels were consistently good. The only disappointment was that the evening meal locations & options were repetitive & sanitised. I felt I had to spend a lot of money on meals that I could have just been eating at home. Some more cultural meal experiences would enhance the trip.
A superb tour, fully lives up to the title “in depth”. Our tour leader was really excellent. Lots of kilometres covered, but in a comfortable air conditioned small coach for the tour group of nine.
Accommodation: All places were very well chosen. Clean, friendly, quiet and well placed from the itinerary point of view, also with good breakfast. Itinerary: In two weeks I think we covered much more that what other trip organizers do. It was really amazing what we have seen. Explore Leader: The Explore Leader was very competent, professional and his knowledge helped us understand the complicated history of all places we visited. The way he explained each place with its evolution was just perfect. He also solved all logistical problems of such a complicated tour. Explore made an excellent choice in selecting this particular Explore Leader.
Excellent trip with our guide Mehmet. Itinerary was very good and Mehmets suggestion of a cruise on our free day in Kas was brilliant
Our guide mehmid was excellent. Good sense of humor and gave us great information on all the sights and culture of turkey
The trip is full on as described, spending many hours on multiple days on a bus, however it’s a big country. The hotel in Cappadocia was great, as was our time there. Some of the hotels were below expected and with pretty unhelpful staff. The tour leader did a good organisational job and the driver was excellent. The other participants were friendly and considerate.
Excellent tour with Oz, an incredibly knowledgeable and caring tour guide. I would recommend this tour. We had only 7 in the group and were able to travel comfortably in a mini van. The only small critique I would have is I would liked to have something different added to the itinerary such as a cooking demonstration but the trip to the turtle sanctuary was great. Having a whole free day in Kas was excellent and the chance to do early morning balloon ride in Cappadocia was the highlight
Overall, a wonderful experience... but a few parts of the itinerary were disappointing. Day 2. Visit to Kadakoy was unnecessary. We were not shown anything of interest; it was just a hurried hike through the streets because it was, according to Zefir, "in the itinerary". We were given free time AFTER the return ferry ride. Had we been given our own ferry tickets, we could have used our free time to explore Kadakoy on our own. Instead we were set free where we'd already been. All but two of us took the tram back to the hotel; the other two going back to the spice market. Day 9. Zefir took us to Xanthos, which was lovely and should be included in the itinerary, but this meant no time for a lunch stop. Breakfast was at 7:45, we arrived in Dalyan at 1:30 to "pick up some pastries" before catching our boat at 2:00 - no option for protein, fruit, or veg. We had a full day Kas the day before and ALL OF US went to a supermarket. It would have been better to be told to "pack a lunch". The trip to the turtle hospital seemed pointless and like we were only there because it was in the itinerary. We were given about 20 minutes to look at the 6 turtles being rehabbed and to read the signs on the walls. No guide/staff member interacted with us. Having someone tell us about the hospital and conservation efforts would have been nice and might have encouraged more of us to donate - which I believe only one person did. I think we'd all have donated if a staff-member welcomed us and engaged with us as a group. Being reminded that we could donate in any currency before we got off the coach might have encouraged more donations as well. The hotel in Dalyan was nice, but the DINNER AT THE HOTEL WAS OVERPRICED for what was on offer AND POOR QUALITY (I don't think they have a chef... just the hotelier; we had the choice of fish, chicken, or lamb and had to decide 2 hours in advance of arriving at the hotel). None of us enjoyed our meal. All of the Turkish beer at the hotel was 5-6 months out of date. We saw so many restaurants on our return boat journey from the beach and saw the prices and food on offer at many of those restaurants on our walk back to the coach. Any of these would have been preferrable as a dinner option.
Much of the tour focussed upon Greco-Roman sites, but my highlight was the walk around Cappadocia with its stunning scenery. Whilst I recognise and accept that sites of interest are spread far and wide in this large country, the schedule was at times punishing, with many hours spent on the tour bus. Thankfully, Turkey has invested in its road infrastructure, the tour bus was spacious and our driver was superb. The tour guide, Yusuf, was both knowledgeable & informative of the sites and always helpful, particularly when dealing with a health emergency. Yusuf also ensured we had the option of a meal every evening at a local restaurant at a reasonable price.
