The weather in Turkey in January is much colder than you might expect, with average temperatures ranging between 5°C (41°F) and 10°C (50°F). The mercury drops even lower in the northeastern plateau city of Kars, with highs of -5°C (23°F) and lows of -15°C (3°F).
In the capital, Ankara, temperatures are chilly, sitting between 4°C (39°F) and -3°C (27°F), with up to 12 days of rain across the month, some of which fall as snow. If you’re in Istanbul in January, temperatures tend to be warmer with highs of 9°C (48°F) and lows of 5°C (41°F), but there is still around 24 millimeters of snowfall across the month. On the Mediterranean coast, Antalya has the warmest temperatures in Turkey in January, with highs of 15°C (59°F) and lows of 6°C (43°F).
