Our tour leader was very good at his job. But some of the information got lost in translation. There were also some points on the walks where I was not sure of my footing. I feel the walks would benefit from having two guides on the walks.
Well planned trip. Enjoyed both the guide and driver. Very professional and easy going.
Excellent in SO MANY WAYS. Loved the hiking and the itinerary - too steep in some small sections, luckily we all made it through without injury — a blessing. Excellent group of hikers, got along great and all were supportive if one another. Aykut was wonderful as a guide and fellow human. One concern is he let the line get too spread out and this definitely caused safety issues as a few times the back few couldn’t follow along and took off inadvertently on wrong trails and fortunately we could call them back to the line - he really needs to tighten up there. I wished he had shown more interest and curiosity in getting to know group members at least a little. But he was wonderful to hang out with and he was extremely well informed and knowledgeable , passionate, and witty. Overall it was a terrific experience and adventure!
Highly recommended in every sense. Flawless, no hassle holiday in wonderful part of the world. Thank you Explore.
A lovely trip through a beautiful part of Turkey. The walking was relatively easy (not sure why this trip is rated as "moderate"), the accommodation was very nice, and the guide was quite knowledgeable and helpful. The itinerary could use some tweaking, e.g. the time we spent at some of the museums; it would have been nice to have more at some and less at others. I'm very glad the wine tasting was earlier in the week, but the outdoor museum at the end of the week seemed superfluous after walking through the region.
This was a very good trip and most enjoyable. The scenery was weird and wonderful and the rock-cut dwellings and churches were always interesting. The walking was of modest pace and duration but, in view of the very hot weather and strong sun, this was fine. One needed to be quite sure-footed on some of the steeper descents and I suspect that these would not suit everyone. I would maybe have liked a bit more variety in the walks, most of which were along valley floors. The hotel was excellent and did a great breakfast every morning. Our tour leader and guide, Aykut, did a very good job, as did our somewhat taciturn driver. The one included dinner was very disappointing; there seemed to be nothing local or characterful about the restaurant and the food was poor. Our brief visits to the underground city and the Goreme open-air museum seemed unpleasantly busy and touristy after the relative solitude of the walking. Perhaps some alternative sites, a little off the beaten track, could be found instead? The tour group was large (15) but full of interesting people and everyone got along well.
The trip is a great introduction to a region of Turkey many of us are unfamiliar with. The scenery I would say is unique. The tour leader Aykut was very good adapting the itinerary to ensure we had the best experience. He imparted his comprehensive knowledge of the area and its history. Although expensive (300 EUR) I would recommend doing a balloon ride if not done before. Also the whirling dervishes option. Both were quite magical experiences in their own ways. Highly recommended.
Well led tour of a fascinating landscape . Daily walks were just the right length and always so many interesting sights to see. Accommodation was very comfortable, and situated within easy access to the town for evening meals out. The swimming pool at the hotel was an added bonus at the end of each day. Definitely recommend this walking tour.
A very good walking tour, Plenty to see and do, A Trip I have wanted to do for a long time.
A fabulous week walking in a stunning landscape - it really has to be seen. The itinerary is well planned to take us through different valleys and trails, winding around jaw-dropping geological formations, caves, and cave-churches. Our hotel was great, very spacious and with lovely pool and gardens. The location is superb, slightly away from the bustle of Goreme but only a short walk to shops and restaurants. Our guide had superb knowledge of the area and led us with great care and adaptability for changing circumstances during the week. Best of all - the balloons! Take a balloon trip if you can and don’t miss the stunning dawn balloonscape!
Aycuk was a superb leader. He was very organised and gave clear and detailed instructions about the walk, the terrain, meeting times etc so everything ran smoothly. He was very knowledgeable and gave us the right amount of information about Cappadocia and what we were seeing etc. He was happy to answer any questions and give more details when asked. He was attentive and checked we were all ok and even suggested alternative ways to shorten or adapt walks and arranged transport. He had a sense of humour and went above and beyond what was expected of a tour leader. I would certainly recommend the trip and his leadership.
I loved my time in Cappadocia. The hotel was great, our guide Aykut was brilliant, the walks a little bit but not too challenging and our group lots of fun. We had two lovely drivers who couldn’t do enough for us. Thoroughly enjoyed all the “sightseeing” activities as we got a break from walking but we learnt more about the history of Türkiye and its people. Being in Cappadocia for a week enabled us to get to know the area so well and see so much more of its wonderful geography and culture.
Loved walking in this fabulous environment and our guide Aykut was terrific. Our weather went from seriously freezing at the start with snow, rain and wind, to scorching hot at the end. He completely rejigged the hiking itinerary so we did everything on the list but in a different order to fit in with changing conditions. Hotel lovely and in a great position for balloon watching and a short walk from the noisy town, but sadly lacking in any sort of common room for congregating in groups. Staff super helpful especially for organising balloon flights, and did their best to try and solve a plumbing issue in our beautiful room.
This was my first time with Explore and it turned out really well. I liked the single base for a week of walking which was more relaxed than moving on every couple of days. The walks themselves were fabulous - amazing scenery and good lengths for me (7-8 miles a day with a good lunch break). The weather in April was very varied - 4 seasons in a week, from snow and cold to sunburn! There were opportunities to skip walks or even just morning / afternoon parts and the driver was super helpful in connecting people up with the group on these occasions. Excellent local guide (Aykut).
This was my first tour with Explore and i was thrilled with my experience. Everything was perfect, the accommodation definitely exceeded my expectations, the guide was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and flexible to the individual needs of our group members. The itinerary and sights that we saw were perfect - we had a truly immersive experience of Cappadocia, but with enough free time to get those extra things ticked off too.
Our guide was fantastic, helping our group appreciate both the cultural and natural wonders we experienced firsthand. His infectious positive attitude brought everyone together, creating a fun and cohesive atmosphere among all the tour participants.
This was the first time I've been on an organised group tour, and I was very uncertain. Explore were helpful and approachable and made the whole experience a pleasure. I was travelling solo and they made extra enquiries to ensure that I could have my own room and looked at various flight options for me, this all meant waiting a few days but was worth it. All the travel and transfers worked without a hitch (Turkish Air was very good) and the information (general and the itinerary) provided by Explore was great. The hotel was clean and comfortable, and staff were friendly . It was hot with the heating high, so the windows were open for most of the holiday. I initially thought the bathroom a bit pokey compared to the huge room, but the shower was amazing. Cappadocia lived up to all the expectations and more. The landscape was extraordinary, a photographer and geologists dream. The human history from subterranean cities, cave churches, pigeon houses meant a week wasn't long enough. Gerome was full of bars, hotels and souvenir shops and has the hubbub of a tourist destinations and everything you might need. Cash was easy to access with an array of cash machine which worked with my travel credit card (FairFX). Alkan the tour guide worked so hard to ensure the holiday suited everyone, he was attentive, adaptable and knowledgeable about Turkey in general and Cappadocia. The group was great and had 10 people from all over and I loved chatting and hearing about different experiences. This was probably what I was must nervous about being a first-timer and solo but nothing to worry about. The walks were stunning and varied and it was great to be out every day. We went up hills, through valleys both wide and very narrow, over makeshift bridges, jumping streams, through natural tunnels and arches and in and out of cave dwellings/churches. It was paced as stated and the weather was great for walking, bright and around 10degsC. There were other activities, ceramics, carpets and whirling dervish all with knowledgeable demonstrations. Special mention to the hot air ballooning, we weren't sure if the weather would allow but early one morning were taken up with masses of other ballons which was very special. Alkan made sure the activities they were always ready for us and that we knew the background for arriving. There was no pressure to be involved in everything if you needed a break. There were some meals in the hotel and some organised in restaurants in the town. The food was great especially the flaming pottery kebab and the breakfast buffet had plenty to suit, both hot and cold including an impressive selection of cheese. Being away at Christmas was brilliant and as it was a bit out of season, meant that there were day waking when we didn't see anyone else apart from the occasional dog. I loved the whole holiday, Alkan worked hard to make it special, the group were a great crowd, and Cappadocia has so much to give. Started looking at the Explore Website for the next one:)
Great trip . Walking not difficult at all . We were raked to good restaurants . Allan the tour leader was excellent really nice guy.
This was a great trip, Alkan was a dedicated, kind and helpful guide who went the extra mile in so many ways, always making sure we were looked after. The walks and the transport to and from were well organised and really enjoyable. We had a fabulous group which made all the difference. The pottery visit, the Whirling Dervishes and the balloon ride were all amazing. My only suggestions for improvement on this trip would be to factor in picnic lunch breaks as 5-6 hours walking without food is too much; and to ask the hotel to reduce the heating - many of us found it hugely overheated and you couldn't adjust it within your own room. Also, take earplugs - a lot of dogs barking throughout the night. But overall a brilliant trip to go on for Christmas.
ACCOMODATION SOBEK STONE HOUSE Very comfortable, warm & cosy for the colder winter months. Indoor pool, variable temperature but ideal for a relaxing dip or short lengths after a long day. Bar & restaurant good for snacks & drinks. Staff extremely efficient & courteous. Location perfect for access to town without the noise & hubbub. Noisy dogs are part of the course in this area. Great view of balloons from terrace. ITINERARY Walks are all not too demanding, meaning you can concentrate on the scenery & there's bags of that. Variety from rock formations to interesting towns & slot canyons. Highlights are the Fairy Chimneys & the Petra-esque churches and houses hacked out of the rocks. Expect some challenges in the way of mud, water & sheepy smells. It's all part of the experience. GROUP Probably the best one yet, in quite a few years of using Explore. Not a diva in sight & no arguments or schisms which can occur after a few days together. Interesting people doth maketh for a better-eth tour-eth. TOUR LEADER Alkan was brilliant, went the extra mile and then some, to keep us all happy. I took a few photos & was always way behind, but he coped with all our foibles easily. Lots of knowledge without overkill. Loved his daily briefs on a range of eclectic topics. BALLOONS I booked before arriving but then the flights were cancelled for the next 6 days. The company refunded the cost with no problem. I then joined the group for the one arranged by the tour leader. We took off on the last day. It is a spectacle & worth every penny. Ours was Eur 170 paying by card, cheaper by cash.
The knowledge & experience of the tour leader, Alkan was superb. Not only other local area but as the country as a whole
