Our leader ( predictive text keeps changing name) was excellent went way beyond her leader duties. She give 110% to her job. Always happy smiling and giving information about the country
The itinerary was great in terms of places. We saw a great variety of places rather than just the obvious Japanese cities. I loved Nagano and really enjoyed staying at the ryokan and monastery. The tour leader was useful with logistics, but often seemed in a rush looking at things. He was nice, but wasn't so much of a guide telling us about the sites. Having previously done a trip with Intrepid, specific guides for castles etc were provided, which gave us much more of a feel for the place we were visiting and the country itself. I was surprised that for the most part, our guide didn't come round the sites eg Matsumoto castle with us. Having 2 free days at the start of the trip, we had no way of contacting the guide, which was quite stressful in a new country. I understand there was a problem with WhatsApp, but an alternative should have been found immediately for safety. I would have preferred the guide to suggest more authentic food experiences rather than mostly at train stations for dinner. There were too many free days, for an escorted holiday. It felt very much we were left to do our own thing, which meant alot of time with people going off in pairs or individually, which isn't so great if you've signed up to a group trip. Other holiday companies gave lots of suggestions for specific activities during free time. It would have been nice to have suggestions of noodle making, origami making, or a sushi class.
I really enjoyed my visit to Japan. The country has so much to offer and the itinerary packed a lot in. We did a lot of travelling by train, which could get quite tiring but we made good time to arrive at train stations and so it wasn’t too stressful. Our tour leader was ok but didn’t impress me as much as I’ve had on previous trips. He didn’t seem to engage with us much and I didn’t feel that his tour was informative. It felt to me that he didn’t really want to be there. The group I was with were lovely though and made the trip enjoyable.
Dean G was an extraordinary guide replete with fascinating items of interest. Exhibiting humor, empathy, knowledge and patience he shepherded the twelve of us ranging in age from 17 to 74 through myriad experiences. One can always nitpick ones itinerary but the overall trip was a smashing success and fir.idable entry to the country and its culture.
Simply Japan was everything I hoped it would be, and more! The variety of experiences and destinations, the transport arrangements, the accommodation were all really good. Our guide Tom Fallon was really excellent - he really did play a key role in making a first class trip. He helped us navigate the cultural differences in Japan and his tours were very informative. I learned a lot about japanese culture and customs. His choice of restaurants was also excellent. Thank you, Tom, for a really memorable trip. I will definitely travel with Explore again.
Tom was an excellent guide - one of the best I've had on any trip. Very knowledgeable and highly organised making the trip truly superb. The itinerary was great - giving the opportunity to sample a wide range of what Japan has to offer. Enjoyed the train travel and it was great not having long travel days within the schedule
Loved this trip. A couple of the hotels were not great, and I feel like you could have easily found nicer accommodations given the price we paid, since hotels are not expensive. The hotel in Tokyo was great. Henrick our guide was fantastic. He was super knowledgeable, friendly, agreeable and never tired of our questions. The second ryokan we stayed at was not great in Yakamaya, Minshuku Iwatakan. Shin Osaka Washington Plaza was not nice. Tabino Hotel in Matsumoto not good. Hotel Mielparque Hiroshima not good - dirty.
An action packed 2 weeks which you only realise how much you saw, experienced and achieved until you are back home looking back at the pictures.
Everything was exactly as described on the website
I this trip provides a good introduction to Japan. We covered a lot of ground and visited many places using trains to move efficiently. Our guide Irene was exceptional in so many way and made the trip so memorable.
Tom did an excellent job - was knowledgeable, interested in sharing his expertise on Japan, on free days he organized tours, took us to some interesting restaurants, always available. I think that he should voted as best tour guide this year! I had a great time. Jack
Our Tour guide Tom was brilliant. Thank goodness he spoke Japanese and knew the ins and out of the travelling and good eating places. We visited so many fabulous places he suggested and he gave us the history
This was also my second trip with Explore and I can't fault them. As a solo female traveller, I like to join a tour, mainly because someone will notice if I don't show up for breakfast! But I also love an itinerary, and not having to think about what I'm doing, staying or eating! I also had a fantastic tour group and it's nice to meet new people and listen to their stories. This tour is very full on, due the time difference, travel and walking involved. I'd been to Japan before so knew what to expect but it was lovely to discover some new places and return to old ones. Our tour guide, Tom, was great! Very enthusiastic about Japan and knew a lot about Buddhism and the way it fits into Japanese life. He took us to amazing places to eat. On the last day we went to Tako Tako King for our farewell dinner, and the takoyaki was delicious. He also did some optional tours on the free days and showed us some cool places. He also takes a great photo! With this tour, you do get some free days. For these parts I would recommend researching what to do before you go, especially for Tokyo, as some popular attractions do need to be booked in advance. I for example went to Disneyland, but Tokyo has unlimited options of things to do. A real highlight for me was Miyajima Island. I thought it was absolutely beautiful. I wish we could have had dinner there and spent the night. I loved all of the hotels we stayed in, the only one that let it down slightly was Hotel Mielparque Hiroshima. It wasn't that bad, but it was dated and smelled like cigarette smoke. But like the others, the breakfast was pretty decent. Overall fantastic tour, would recommend! I'll certainly be back to Japan in the future. And I'm planning to book another Explore tour in the next couple of months.
Simply Japan could not have been a better introduction to Japan for my husband and I. Our tour guide Jeff Contreares was fabulous and provided so much incite to Japan as we toured round. The hotels were brilliantly located, just some seemed a little tired, but as it was a base to sleep it really didn't detract from the tour. Some early starts and a lot of walking, but that did not matter, we wanted to capture everything, getting up before the tour day started to take pictures of the local area.
Our guide was Raya, who was excellent. She was friendly, enthusiastic and well organised. She led the group on trips when we had our own time to see various parts of the places we visited. Raya was especially good in giving us insights into Japanese culture and customs.
We thoroughly enjoyed our recent Simply Japan trip. The size of the group at 16 people was perfect, you wouldn't want any bigger. The accommodation was excellent throughout. we particularly liked the stay in the Zenkoji Temple lodgings, as was the food. The "banquet" at the "minshuku" featuring the "Hine beef"was simply outstanding. Sam, our guide was fantastic, full of detailed knowledge of all of the locations, both geographic and historic, and very adept at shepherding our tour group through the Tokyo and Osaka metro systems as well as onto trains and buses when travelling around the country. He was also the master at delivering excellent but affordable meals wherever we went, so much so that we were well under budget at the end of our trip. Overall this was a fantastic trip that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to friends. The only thing I would have changed was to add an extra day in Kyoto as there is so much to do and see there. We had some extra time at the end so travelled back to Kyoto from Osaka to visit some of the things we had missed on the tour.
Interesting, well organised and varied itinerary including some free time. Excellent tour guide Marco.
This was a brilliant tour, covering many key Japanese highlights. Our tour guide, Jeff Contreras, was brilliant with a deep knowledge of Japanese culture and history. He was a completely outstanding guide who ensured the holiday was fun for everyone in the group. We felt supported for the whole trip and had complete faith in our guide's ability to facilitate our travel and visits. The itinerary was exciting and perfectly manageable as we travelled from one amazing location to another. The excellent selection of destinations gave us the opportunity to explore many aspects of Japan, each one with its own unique atmosphere. There was enough free time to do some exploring on our own. The hotels were all outstanding, better than we had anticipated. The stay at the Zenkoji Yakuo In temple was magical, especially rising early to see the monks' rituals. We would definitely recommend this as a fantastic introduction to Japan.
Need to start by saying that the trip was wonderful. There are always a few things that could be a little better but the holiday was great. One thing that couldn’t be improved upon is the utterly amazing tour leader, Raya. She couldn’t have done anything more to make the trip any better. She was so good at communicating her love of Japan and went above and beyond in every way. What a pleasure spending time being shown Japan by her! It looks as if Explore may have already made some changes to future itineraries. It would have been better to have an additional day in Kyoto and if Osaka is the final stop then the hotel should be nicer. Better pre trip assistance on getting to the hotel from the airport would have been a good idea and greater explanation of the length of time when suitcases wouldn’t be available and that there would be storage for things carried on those days so the day sack didn’t need to be as minimal as was implied. However overall a great experience.
The tour travelled at a very quick pace and what we experienced was a diverse, superficial look at a broad section of Japan. The good things were the number of places we visited and the information provided by our guide. The group were lovely, the Japanese people very helpful and everywhere was extremely clean. Visiting Hiroshima was a trip highlight and very moving. Our luggage traveling ahead worked particularly well. The things that worked less well included day one in Tokyo (agenda too full and only one break in a long day), the restaurants we were taken to (a few were good but mostly not), the Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka hotels were poor (horrible breakfast and uncomfortable beds). Overall this was a memorable holiday and I would consider Explore for future trips but would probably book their upgraded holidays for greater comfort.
Thé Simply Japan vacation we had with Explore was the trip of a lifetime! Our guide Raya was very knowledgeable, ever patient, and full of good humour. The itinerary provided a very comprehensive array of activities; we felt we saw lots but were never rushed. I would encourage future tours to include a visit to the Sanjusangendo Temple (with the impressive 1001 statues - wow!); it was not to be missed! Also, I would encourage some sort of way to mark the leader’s progression through streets when there are shoulder-to-shoulder crowds, as some people got separated from the main group several times - yikes! I would definitely encourage others to take the Simply Japan tour. We loved it - and our guide!
This was a very busy and interesting tour which gives a good overview of Japanese life and culture. Unfortunately there was little time to see Japan outside the major tourist hubs so there was a lot of concrete. The place is spotlessly clean, the natives are very friendly and the food was excellent. Our guide Andrew spoke perfect English and looked after us very well.
The Simply Japan trip is a great way to get a taste of Japan in 12 days...it hits a number of key locations including Tokyo, Zenkoji Temple, Hiroshima and Miyajima Island and Kyoto, and includes many neat experiences such as walking through the woods to see the snow monkeys of Jigokudani, spending a night in the Zenkoji Temple, and joining the monks for morning prayers.
An outstanding tour covering as much as is possible in two weeks from modern cities to traditional shrines. Quite hard work using public transport and and lots of walking but that just makes the tour better. We had a great guide and some extraordinary experiences from Snow Monkeys to Bullet trains and bathing in an Onsen in a traditional Inn to tasting some amazing food.
Extortionate price for poor accommodation and only breakfast included. No transfer to airport. Carried backpacks on many days as main luggage sent on. Walking for hours a day and lots of public transport. Don’t know where the money went as no value for the price of the trip
A great introduction to a fascinating country.
Excellent itinary packed in a lot in 11 days. Group leader excellent very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about Japan and ensured we all travelled safely. Would not suit those with limited mobility as a lot of walking and use of public transport but great for those with no issues. Would highly recommend it.
A wonderful holiday in Japan! So many amazing and varied experiences in the tour along with free time to allow us to begin to explore this beautiful country. So many highlights including Temple Fire Ceremony, bullet trains, Nagano, Hiroshima and Miyajima, traditional inns, onsens, temples and shrines, delicious food – and meeting and touring with a great group of fellow explorers! I could definitely have packed lighter as hotels and inns provide pyjamas and toiletries. Our tour leader, Andrew, was excellent, really good fun, friendly, knowledgeable and always recommending places to visit and restaurants to try. This was my first trip with Explore and I was not disappointed – it was a fabulous trip and I loved it!
Outstanding tour leader. No request was too much trouble. Andrew was considerate & kind with a fabulous sense of humour.
"Simply Japan" was a very good introduction to a fantastic country. Overall, the accommodation was of a really good standard: clean, comfortable and well-located. Having travelled with Explore on several occasions and experiencing homestays, I had high hopes for the overnight stay in the family-run minshuku in Takayama; however, we saw nothing of the family and the accommodation had more of a feeling of an old-style hostel. The itinerary was considered and varied. There were lots of highlights, including the snow monkeys, Nagano and Zenkoji, the Kenrokuen Gardens in Kanazawa, Hiroshima, the visit to Miyajima Island, and the Fushimi Inari Shrine in Kyoto. There was a lot to explore in Kyoto but not enough time to experience this city. The end point of the tour in Osaka was a bit of a let-down and put a bit of a damper on what had been an excellent trip. In addition, the hotel here had little going for it other than it was functional and well-located for easy onward transportation to the airport. It wasn't clear in the trip notes that the day bag for overnight stays would be taken directly to the next hotel. Knowing this would have helped with packing planning. Our tour leader was organised, positive and enthusiastic. He was keen to help and answer our questions, being sure to find out if he didn't know the answer. He took good care of the group and gave clear instructions. Having travelled several times with Explore before, I expected to gain a good understanding of a range of contemporary topics. I found this missing from this tour. Nevertheless, our tour leader did answer questions when asked. Overall, this was a great tour and I have lots of wonderful memories of places and times shared with a lovely bunch of people. Thank you, Explore!
Hanan was an excellent Tour Leader. There were group members who wanted to be a bit more independent which she worked with. The rest of us were lead very well - her attention to detail for trains was excellent.
Excellent holiday in Japan. It was a full itinerary and we had so many wonderful experiences in the time we had. Our guide, Raya, was brilliant. She gave us so much of her time and knowledge, always recommending great places to go and see and the best places to eat.
Fantastic full on trip. Maybe a bit more walking at fast pace than I initially thought but definitely doable. Varied itinerary woukd appeal to most people
As stated in the description of the tour, plenty of walking and lots of steps up and down. Fantastic guide, Hanan, who was more than 5*****. She ensured that everyone had a good time in what is a very different culture. We experienced plenty of different restaurants and food types thanks to her. A wide variety experiences such as seeing snow monkeys, very early morning temple ceremonies, hot baths, gardens, trains and cherry blossom to name but a few.
A fascinating trip to Japan that covered a wide range of experiences. We travelled on public transport throughout the trip which was great. Personally, the snow monkeys were a highlight for me, but there were so many others too. I was lucky enough to travel during cherry blossom season which made everywhere look just so amazing. I always felt totally safe whether with the group or travelling solo. Everywhere was super clean even though are are few bins, as everyone takes there rubbish home. The toilets are also fab with heated seats, built in bidets and sounds to cover any you make while on the loo! Japan just has a different vibe to it, which I loved. We tried a few different onsens so I would recommend you give them a go. You can pack light as all hotels provided pyjamas and toiletries. A fabulous trip.
We had a great time, lots to do and see. Travelling on our own on the trains and metro was challenging, but we survived. The guest house accommodation was really good, the food dinner and breakfast was fantastic. The presentation was stunning and for once you weren’t trying too work out what to have and interpret menus. Loads of really good craft beers to be had, some with a unique Japanese slant, if looked around. Our guide Raya, was superb, full of facts, energy and enthusiasm. She even gave up her free time to guide us on the free days. A great holiday, highly recommended.
Absolutely brilliant way to see highlights of Japan in a couple of weeks. Excellent organisation as always with Explore. Special mention for our tour leader - her boundless energy and enthusiasm made sure we didn’t miss a thing.
The leader was excellent , however I got the feeling that this was Japan on the cheap with too much Bus, Train, Metro etc to keep costs down. I would have preferred to have a dedicated bus and driver in some areas. There was too much free time, and our leader ended up taking us out, which was great, after all ,this is a holiday with a leader, in order to maximise on the sights etc in Japan. I could have done a DIY Japan which probably would have taken longer to sort out. Finally there should have been a proper transfer Taxi etc at the end of the holiday to the airport instead of being dumped on a local train (more cost saving) timings on this trip were not great. Suggest you have another close look at the itinerary, after all this is an expensive holiday.
A very rich cultural experience and education.
Excellent tour - packs a lot in, excellent value for money. Good mix of city of non-city experiences and a variety of aspects of Japanese culture. Our tour guide, Jared, was excellent - knowledgeable and experienced, and took time to provide recommendations based on our personal interests. Plus he was a lot of fun, and provided excellent dessert recommendations! One suggestion would be to add in a trip to the Senbon Torii in Kyoto - it's free to the public and everyone wanted to see it, so it would have been an easy group outing to add on to day 11 after visiting the castle, especially as the next day was a free day with plenty of time to explore the rest of Kyoto.
Had a wonderful couple of weeks on this trip. Great way to see and experience as much of the country as possible in a fortnight and our tour leader Andrew really was superb in managing our group's differing interests and confidence levels - he really went above and beyond at times!
I cannot recommend our tour leader, Henrik, highly enough. He was fun, knowledgable, interesting, approachable, spoke excellent English and fluent Japanese, and all in all was absolutely everything that a tour leader should be.
A fantastic first visit to Japan. The itinerary was well thought out and covered lots of essential sights. The tour leader was excellent and did exceptionally well at keeping the group intact across lots of public transport links between hotels. I would highly recommend this tour for anyone who has yet to visit Japan.
This was an amazing holiday, excellent organized and delivered by Andrew, the team leader. Every place & activity in the program had it's importance and has contributed to an experience to remember for a long time. The temples & castles visited, dinner to a family run restaurant or experiencing street food in Matsumoto or the Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima, the accommodation to a temple lodgings or in a family run ryokan, fire ceremony in the Buddhist temple, visit to Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Museum etc - each and everyone of these activities have been an experience.
We have travelled with Explore several times before and the Simply Japan trip exceeded our expectations. Accommodation was located perfectly and close to the stations which was useful when we had free days and had to navigate the trains and subways ourselves. We really enjoyed the days we had opportunities to explore ourselves and we managed to navigate the transport system . The rooms and bathrooms were small, but you are in Japan so this was expected. The temple lodgings and local guest house were both fantastic experiences sleeping on futons and having use of the onset, shared hot bath. Our guide did give us time slots so we didn’t have to share with others in our group. The food we experienced was great and our guide Dean took us to some lovely local restaurants. Breakfast was buffet style and was mainly Japanese. We are actually missing having rice , noodles and miso soup for breakfast now we are home. Too many highlights to mention them all; shrines, going to morning prayer, snow monkeys, tea houses, castles, fantastic cherry blossom, bamboo groves, gardens… bullet trains, history of Hiroshima and the modern day life of Tokyo and Osaka. Some fantastic scenery as well on the train journeys. Some points that I feel could be made clearer in the trip notes though. There is a lot of walking involved. We averaged 5 - 7 miles a day, lots and lots of steps particularly when using the trains and subways. The walk to the snow monkeys is also quite long and walking shoes are really needed as it’s muddy and can be icy. We walked Mount Misen as well as this was lovely but was 3 1/2 hours of climbing steps which was tough going, but worth it. We are in our early 50’s and fairly fit so the walking and steps were not a problem for us, but some in our group did struggle. The luggage being forwarded for us was great, but we still needed to carry a back pack when travelling with 2 days worth of clothes etc and we had to carry this on the trains, and on the walk to the hotel, so again a decent level of fitness is needed. The subways were often crowded so standing up was often the way. Food and drink was fairly cheap, as was entrance to museums which was typically £2.50! Overall a great trip and I would highly recommend. Japan is so clean and the people so respectful and polite. Thanks again to our guide Dean who was brilliant. Karen and Ian from the UK.
Very well structured and executed. Be prepared to walk 15,000 or so steps a day.
This is a great varied itinerary. Kyoto was a particular highlight - wonderful cherry blossom (a week into April) along the Philosopher's Path, and so many spectacular shrines and temples. I would recommend adding an extra couple of days pre-tour in Tokyo at the start, and also a day or two in Osaka/Kyoto at the end, to allow more time to see the highlights. The travel by both bullet train and local transport worked really well, and it was good not to be overburdened with heavy bags when travelling. On a practicaI note I would recommend bringing a packable holdall (from Go Outdoors or similar) for the days/nights when you don't have your main luggage with you, so you can carry a bit more and avoid having to cram everything into your rucsac, then you can later fold away the holdall into your main luggage when not using it.
A wonderful way to experience Japan but not for anyone who wants to be spoonfed. A very active programme with free days to explore on your own which involves navigating the public transport systems.
Our tour leader J went above and beyond. A fellow traveler lost a bag and he stepped up without hesitation to retrieve it - truly amazing. He politely guided us through cultural customs and made us feel comfortable in the environment. He was always available for our countless questions. The variety of sights and areas of Japan in the itinerary were vast. One temple prayer session would be sufficient. Public transportation was amazing. Enjoyed the bullet train. Hotels had great breakfast buffets with something for everyone. Be aware paying for single traveler does not always guarantee at the traditional stays like monastery or ryokan- that was a bit awkward at my age, but we worked with it.The return transfers could have been a bit more orderly, but I arrived at the airport on time. Really good group to travel with too -- we were at capacity and Jeff kept us all on track. As with all my trips, wishing I could have spent more time in some of the areas. But there is always next time. Try to add a bit more time for arrival and departure if possible.
I thoroughly enjoyed my two week Simply Japan 25 vacation. The accommodation was a step up from previous Explore holidays, the itinerary did exactly what was required, providing a top line highlights of what Japan has to offer a first time visitor and the tour guide, Doni was fantastic; knowledgable, courteous, enthusiastic and above all passionate about Japan.
Just returned from a fantastic trip to Japan. Explore delivered again with excellent logistics ensuring a very smooth holiday experience. Our tour leader Doni was exceptional, teaching us so much about the modern culture of Japan as well as providing an in depth knowledge of it’s history. We were taught how to navigate the Japanese railways and public transport and master the required queuing etiquette. Doni also took us to local restaurants that tourists would be unlikely to find without a guide with the knowledge Doni had. Doni also helped us with a highly entertaining Karaoke end to our holiday.
This tour amazingly ticked all the boxes for a first time adventure to Japan! 🌸 The cherry blossoms were lovely, the people were friendly and helpful, and we really enjoyed the pace. Our tour leader was very informative, upbeat, respectful and helpful. Our best dinner together was in Takayama (local Hida beef bento dinner) and the sake tour was lovely. The group also had very good dinners in Nagano and in Osaka. Most of the food recommendations from our guide for dining on your own were just a step above fast food (food courts), so we turned to google and guide books. There were a few instances when our tour guide could have been clearer (e.g., letting us know where to sit in the temple BEFORE we entered, how long and arduous the Mt. Misen hike really is, and we missed the return to Hiroshima on a smaller scenic boat as all tickets were sold right before we left (this could have been avoided if we'd been told to purchase our return tickets upon arrival)). Sometimes the hotels were quite dated, but all were clean. These were minor issues, and there's always room for improvement with any group tour. Overall, a wonderful experience!!!
First time in Japan. Really enjoyed the experience. The tour guide was excellent, very helpful. The tour was reasonably intense, with the odd day off to do your own thing. Would recommend, if you can do it, to include an extra day or two at the start and end of the tour.
An amazing trip of memorable experiences, efficiently organised, and lead by a very knowledgeable and friendly guide!
Had a marvellous time in Japan. Tour leader Donnie was exceptional. He went above and beyond.
Our Explore Leader was excellent . His local knowledge combined with his rapport with the Group helped to make this a holiday to remember. His suggestions and recommendations outside the organised itinerary were extremely helpful and helping us to understand the protocols, the rules and the culture was great. My only criticism of the tour relates to the free day in Tokyo - the brochure perhaps leads the the traveller towards the long day to see Mt Fuji … We chose not to do this trip and instead spent a wonderful day in Tokyo. Based on the feedback of others who did the trip I would suggest a more balanced set of suggested options in the itinerary write up would be helpful Overall a great trip and thoroughly recommend
This was an excellent introduction to Japan. We saw lots of highights and it made me want to return to this lovely country. The guide was patient and enthusiastic and kept close track of his group despite crowds and distractions.
We had a terrific time on our March 9 trip thanks to our excellent tour leader Zi(lola). She was very well informed about all the places we visited and provided regular briefings to keep everyone in the group on track. Zi was very helpful in explaining how to navigate the different elements of Japan’s public transport system. This was a major confidence builder for Maria and I who stayed on after the tour’s conclusion to spend another twelve days on our own. Setting up a WhatsApp group was a great idea. It allowed Zi to recap key information that we needed as well as facilitating group interaction for dinner planning and photo sharing. Our itinerary provided a nice blend of historical and modern culture as well allowing free time for individual preferences. The accommodation was top notch and nearly all locations provided some Western food for breakfast. If you are interested in visiting Japan, three things are key – an eSIM for navigating on your own, the Go Taxi app which may be useful if public transit is not available or will take too long e.g. in Kyoto, and familiarity with Google Translate and specifically the camera tool for translating Japanese characters. You should also ensure that you always have plenty of cash since smaller restaurants won’t take credit cards, and the reloading of your transportation IC card has to be done with cash unless you have the iPhone app.
Our tour leader, Giulia, was just amazing! Her knowledge and enthusiasm for Japan really came across and I learnt so much about the people, places and culture from her. Simply Japan is a great tour for a first time visitor to get a good understanding of the country
Simply Japan is pretty much as described in the trip notes, a full-on tour. Owing to the challenges of travelling by Minibus on Japan's highways the tour makes full use of Japan's Efficient rail network. Each location change is via train (Shinkansen or Ltd. Express). This would be more difficult without forwarding main luggage items by courier, hence living out of an overnight bag on 3 separate occasions during the tour. All these travel arrangements and surviving the many city Metro and tram systems would be extremely daunting if it was not for the ceaseless attention of the tour guide. I could not praise our guide Henrik enough for his support. His enthusiasm and local knowledge was invaluable and clear instructions and morning briefings kept everyone in the group on track. Almost every night he offered a group dinner option for those who wished to join him and he would take us to some less known local restaurant for authentic local cuisine. Even on the designated free time days Henrik (his designated days off), would offer to show anyone who wished to local places of interest. All in all a wonderful experience. The only improvement I would suggest is that arranging an extra day in Tokyo at the beginning and in Osaka at the end would be highly beneficial (Some in the group had done this). Time is limited at the start and end of the tour and I certainly felt that I have not quite explored Tokyo and Osaka as much as I would have liked. Lliasing with your tour group leader is very useful to plan visits to the most popular temples shrines and attractions. Most big tour groups tend to plan visits for opening time and pre lunch or post lunch. Visiting attractions at around 9:45, 13:00 or 15:00 generally avoids the massive peak-time coach tours. Thank you Explore for another great travel experience
Trip covered so many iconic places, the organisation was perfect, the care of the tour guide was super, and informative.
I had an amazing holiday, Andrew our guide was great, really helpful and knowledgeable. He kept our group together well. He gave good suggestions for dinner around where we were staying which I used often. Seeing the blossom was fantastic. The who itinerary was well thought out and I felt I got a great overall experience of Japan
Fascina Everything is beautiful Lovely people!. Every city/town we visited deserved more time, but within time constraints c we have seen a lot! The recommend extra trip to see Mount Fuji was wonderful, but one has to be lucky with the weather .. Accommodation was very good. Loved the one night in the old fashioned Japanese hotel. Excellent breakfasts in every hotel.
The guide can make or break a trip irrespective of the itinerary and Tom Fallen was one of the best we’ve had. He went above and beyond the base itinerary and his love of Japan, its culture, and its food was infectious.
Leader Kevin has great knowledge of japanese culture & language & history. However, he needs to be more attentive to the limitations of his older clients. He recommended one hike as "fairly easy", but in truth should be rated difficult with a 30-degree slope and 700m elevation loss..
The size of the group was great and the itinerary allowed us to see many things for our first visit to Japan! Decent amount of free time allowed for shopping or different activities (or rest if needed). A good amount of walking and using public transport. Our guide, Henrik, could have shared much more information in local areas and focussed on some individuals in the group who were a little unwell. Accommodation was great and of decent quality.
Accommodation: was 3 to 4 star as outlined in the tour summary, very clean and comfortable. All of them provided Japanese sleepwear, which was a surprise. Sleeping in a Japanese temple, and eating traditional breakfast was a great experience. Only issue we experienced was that pillow comfort was hit and miss - this is not unusual travelling anywhere, but caused some restless nights. Itinerary: As first-time tour travelers, we thoroughly enjoyed the itinerary. Having spoken to friends that had recently visited Japan, they were amazed by many of the things we did that they weren't aware of. The tour provided a very broad experience of modern and historical culture, art and religions, how to navigate the complex transport system, and provided free time to explore or relax. We booked extra day accommodation before and after the tour, and recommend this so as not to feel rushed/tired at the start of the tour. The tour did a lot of walking and took public transport, and for us this provided a deeper experience. Explore tour leader: Marco was our wonderful, informative, caring, cheerful guide. Our tour group size was 13, and members' age range was 22 to 80, UK and Australia blend, all got on very well, and Marco looked after all of us, our questions and needs. Most of the group members took up his excellent recommendations for dining and free-time sightseeing. Marco added much more to the tour for us all.
Simply Japan was our first ever tour and we can’t wait to do another. Since returning our friends and family asked us for our favourite thing was, but we are unable to name just one. Japan has always been on our list of places to visit, and having been there for work previously, we wanted to see and experience as much as possible, and this tour did just that. David Lam was a fantastic guide, who not only taught us about the places we visited, but also just how to get around Japan by train and bus, exchange coins at a 7-eleven, foods to try and places to shop (and more!). The WhatsApp group was a great source of information, and an easy way to share photos between the group. The tour pacing was just right for us, with enough free time to explore some parts on our own, although we mostly took David’s excellent suggestions and were not disappointed. When most of the group agreed to one of David’s suggestions, David would often help organise and/or ****** us to those destinations to ensure we maximised our time and enjoyment. This included the traditional tea ceremony and many of the dinner locations. One of our highlights was the Mt Fuji tour with JTB Sunrise tours. This is recommended but not included in the Explore tour and can be very hit and miss depending on the time of year and weather. But in November your chances improve, and we even saw the first snow of the season. This tour included a ferry on a lake and cable car for more views of Mt Fuji and surrounds. Take the train option for the return, it only took half-an-hour, while the bus was likely to hit traffic and take at least 2 hours. You may need to book the tour before arriving in Japan. The food highlight of the tour was the Hiroshima Okonomiyaki savoury pancakes. These were so good we went back again the following night to have more. Notable other meals included the first night in Tokyo with group, the gluten-free Tempura Asakusa Sakura in Tokyo, and Ramen Street at Tokyo station, although ordering the Ramen on the machines at the restaurants proved to be a challenge the first time. Hiroshima was a highlight for us, and we want to come back to Miyajima, even stay a night, to explore the island more thoroughly. This was the only location on the tour where we felt rushed. We averaged about 15,000 steps a day, peaking at 20,000 with some of the optional destinations. We knew the hotel rooms would be small, and they really were in Tokyo at Hotel Sunroute Asakusa, but all the other hotels and rooms were comfortable. Hotel breakfasts were more of a challenge, and we appreciated a more western breakfast by time we arrived in Hiroshima. The weather was kind to us, with just a bit of rain in Tokyo and Kanazawa. It was about 15 degrees each day, so a jacket was needed most days, and something warmer for the early starts. Our flights were from Narita, so we organized our own train tickets from the airport, including from Osaka back to Tokyo at the end of the tour. There is lots of free wifi available, but we found having Ubigi e-sims on our phones handy when navigating around in each city, just turn off those apps that consume lots of data first. You will need to have some cash handy; David will give you advance warning when it is required, and the 7-eleven ATMs were good for withdrawing more cash. That said, we were able to purchase most things using a Wise debit card to minimise the currency fees. We also wanted to thank David, Rachael and Explore for their assistance when one of us become ill, making it easier for us to stay an extra night in Kanazawa and catch up to the group on the train to Hiroshima. Did I mention the trains? A great way to see the countryside and wind down between cities.
A wonderful and thorough visit of Japan! We had an outstanding tour guide Irene who went the extra mile to help us and make the most of our trip. We saw many interesting places and the autumn colours were amazing!
This was a well-paced trip with an excellent itinerary and more free time than I've been used to on previous tours, allowing us to seek out the areas which appealed to us. To that end, I highly recommend getting an eSim on your phone so that you can navigate around using google maps without racking up a huge bill. Going in mid November, I wasn't prepared for just how cold the weather was, in particular the wind. Hat and gloves and a winter jacket were essential. We decided to use our free day in Tokyo to visit Nikko which was worth the trip but we only thought to book the train the day before and the early morning trains had sold out. Fortunately we were luckier when booking a bullet train from Osaka back to Tokyo at the end of the trip, allowing us a fabulous view of Mt Fuji and another day in Tokyo before catching our flight home. Overall, we loved the travel on various forms of public transport throughout the whole tour - a great way to get around, much better than being stuck on a coach. We were also very fortunate in having an excellent, very patient, tour guide in Kerique who gave us a great insight into the country.
Outstanding and very varied tour. Too many highlights to mention but we were particularly lucky to be there for the peak of the autumn colour in the amazing Japanese gardens. Our tour leader Irene went above and beyond and greatly added to our enjoyment of the trip.
This was one of the best trips I have been on! Varied itinerary that included all the main sites but also included places off the beaten trail. Very smooth travel between cities and well-organised luggage facilities/transfers enabling us to get the most out of our day. Well-situated , comfortable hotels. David Lam was an excellent tour leader, anticipating any potential issues, and calmly ensuring everyone was happy. His local knowledge meant he was able to advise us of the best places to eat and give us tips for local independent journeys on our free days. Can’t recommend him highly enough!
Great trip. Lots of variety - cities and country. Lots of walking around the sights. Hotels close to the stations and only had to carry small bag anyway as main luggage forwarded to and from hotels as described in trip notes. David, our guide, was really knowlegable and organised meals at a wide variety of restaurants and always had suggestions for cafes or bakeries when needed! Overall a fantastic holiday.
This was my first holiday with Explore and it certainly wont be my last ! The tour guide Karique was simply brilliant, so charismatic, caring, thoughtful and organised with a wonderful personality. He made the packed tour of Japan even more memorable !!
The group, guide and itinerary were excellent. It was a great holiday and a wonderful experience.
Simply Japan gave us just what we wanted - experience of Japanese culture, history and the natural environment. Yes, you are on your feet for most of the day, but it pays dividends as you make the most of the opportunities presented to you with lots of information and advice from a knowledgeable Group Leader. For example, during the day-and-a-half in Kanazawa within the Group we visited the Normura Samurai House, visited the Kenrokuen Gardens, then during the free time, we took part in a tea ceremony, visited the Museum of Artisan Skills, went to ‘Meet the Geiko (geisha)’ and saw some traditional dancing and music when returning to the hotel through the station. The hotels are all comfortable and there is a vast range of eateries to choose from (or simply follow your Leader’s recommendations). Marco, our Group Leader, was very good - knowledgeable, enthusiastic, helpful and keen to ensure everyone had the best possible experience. His insight into Japanese youth culture was very illuminating. Advice for Potential Travellers: Google Translate & Google Maps are invaluable. Get an esim, portable wifi or a local sim if possible. If you cannot, there are lots of free wifi (in the museums, eateries, or a municipal service) to help out, if necessary The trip notes advice on umbrellas is very apposite The initial impression of public transport is rather daunting, but there are English signs, colour coding and the underground stations are numbered. Finally, people are happy to help. Tokyo & Kyoto railway stations are massive. Make a note of which entrance you used for when you return Marco, our tour leader, was good (see above), but we found some aspects of Explore’s ‘back office’ a bit disappointing: We booked our trip almost 18 months in advance (something we had never done before!), received our booking acknowledgement and downloaded the trips. That was the only communication we had until the final trip notes. No prompting on key dates e.g. providing a copy of the main passport page for the rail pass, despite the trip notes saying a reminder would be sent. The initial information gives details of qualification for free airport/hotel transfers, but the only confirmation from Explore comes in a paragraph entitled ‘Arrival Instructions’ in the final trip details. I had already chased confirmation that we were eligible by phoning, but when the final details arrived they stated that we did not have the free transfers. After several more attempts to get a written confirmation of eligibility, I finally received revised final details. Several members of the Group also had trouble, especially for leaving Osaka, so they had to pay and reclaim when they returned to the UK. Finance Japan was cheaper than expected. Food & drink was cheaper than in the UK. Public transport was very cheap Credits cards were widely accepted, but there were instances where only cash was accepted Discounts were available in some places for foreign over 60s
loved the trip, the group, the experience. Trip was full on but this enabled all aspects of Japanese culture, history and food to be taken in. The guide Giulia was excellent, her knowledge of everything Japanese was extensive, no question left unanswered, she was really good fun as well ! If you are thinking of Japan (its unique) go for it. Giulia
This was a fantastic trip - it covered a lot in a short period, and for someone who has wanted to visit Japan for years it definitely ticked all the boxes! Our trip started in mid-November and we got some great Autumn colours towards the end of the two weeks. Karique, our tour leader, was brilliant - he had lots of local knowledge and interesting background about the country. He looked after everyone in the group and made sure accessibility needs were catered for, while remaining calm and cheerful throughout. One tip for anyone considering this trip would be to pre-plan / pre-book for the free days, as things get booked up quickly, especially in busy periods.
Firstly the guide -Guila was an amazing, fun guide, whose attention to detail was excellent. The trip had 3 free days and she gave us plenty of diverse ideas of places that we might want to visit to make the most of our free time. I have to say she is possibly the best guide I have ever had on a tour. The trip was full of variety, covering a large diverse area of Japan. Transport was mainly by the bullet train, some buses and local trains. All worked perfectly and to time. A lot of walking around towns and cities to see the local sights but that didn’t detract from the trip. I am a single, well travelled, traveller who joined the Explore trip in Tokyo, and have never felt so safe in a country going out on my own, even at night. Accomodation was on the whole good- I would strongly advise to not take a huge suitcase as in some hotels room space in limited. I would love to go back to Japan, and perhaps join another one of Explore’s trips to a different area.
Simply Japan is a great introduction to Japan. It includes major sites, cultural experiences, a variety of culinary styles, travel on Japan’s train network and opportunities to engage with local people. Karique, our guide, was brilliant, caring, safety conscious, informed and fun throughout.
Our guide Giulia Greco was the absolute best, nothing was too much for her. We can’t rate her highly enough. She took us safely as the group from Tokyo to Osaka. She was amazing.
Simply Japan is a very well thought-out introduction to an amazing country. The sights we visited were extremely varied -- ideal for anyone (like me) wary of overdosing on too many temples and shrines. Since I do a lot of walking and traveling by train in my home country, the amount we did seemed "normal." The hotels were quiet and comfortable (with some impressive breakfasts). And our experienced, funny, coffee-and-anime-loving tour leader, Giulia Greco, excelled in introducing us to Life in Japan, both traditional and modern. Just be aware: This is not a 5-star / "white glove" / fine dining / "I don't want to lift a finger" tour. You'll spend two nights in traditional, futon on the floor establishments. You'll also spend very little time in Tokyo, a fascinating city, so you might want to book extra days before or after the tour to explore it on your own. And whatever you do, don't overpack!
Used public transport rather than private minibuses which gave us a good feel for the country. Hotels conveniently near railway stations.
This was absolutely the trip of a lifetime. I had been wanting to visit Japan for nearly twenty years, but with my limited knowledge of Japanese language, we wanted to have a guided tour led by someone with more local experience. Our guide Giulia was an absolute rockstar, and gave us lots of interesting insight into Japanese life and culture. All of her recommendations for things to see/do and places to eat were absolutely spot on, and our trip would not have been the same without her. We loved each location we visited, from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo to the quieter mountain towns. We had some unforgettable experiences, and are already looking to plan another trip to Japan. This was my favorite trip I've ever taken, and we'll be sure to direct our friends and family to this tour.
This is a well organised, small group (16) trip which has a good mix of planned/guided activities and time to explore on your own. It makes good use of Japan's excellent public transport system to take in many different sights in a fairly short space of time, so plenty of one or two night stays in a range of interesting towns and cities. There is a fair amount of walking. Some of it is strenuous but there is the option to opt out of those parts. The Explore leader was knowledgeable and gave us a good insight into Japanese culture. He also gave plenty of advice about activities, restaurants and travel options for our free days. Hotels were largely standard chains and facilities varied. All were clean and, except for the temple visit stay, in good condition. Hotel choice probably driven by proximity to rail network. The towns visited gave us a good chance to see cultural and historic buildings along with fabulous natural landscapes and beautiful gardens. We had great weather and the autumn colours were astonishingly dramatic. We all really enjoyed getting a taste of this fascinating country and it certainly whets the appetite for another visit.
