The itinerary covered the main parts of Honshu island. We had some unique experiences such as the talk from the Hiroshima Survivor and the lunch with the Maiko (apprentice Geisha). Our Guide was incredible. He looked after us so well and made everyone feel safe and cared for. The way the luggage was sent to the next Hotel was fantastic. We did not have to drag bags onto trains or buses, it was all done for us. The meals were amazing and the Hotel accommodation was top class. One other thing I loved was the flexibility. We stayed in places mostly for 2 nights and if you were too tired or unwell you could opt out of the days excursions and relax in the Hotel or do your own thing as long as you let the Guide know so he did not worry about you. I would highly recommend this tour.
Excellent and thoroughly enjoyable trip. Travel guide was outstanding.
This is a very good introduction to Japan. We visited many diverse locations from southern to northern areas. We were able to see rural Japan to see the lovely countryside as well as beautiful ancient temples, and skyscrapers in Tokyo. Hiroshima is saddening, but very educational and inspiring to see the recovery of the land and people. Listening to a survivor tell his story was a privilege.
The itinerary was very good. I partcularly liked the special experience of meeting the Hiroshima survivor after visiting the very moving museum. She was absolutely amazing. I just wish world leaders could also hear her presentation. In Kyoto I thoroughly enjoyed the Maiko's performance while we ate an excellent lunch. Another of my highlights was visiting the Kubota Icchiku Museum. The kimonos on dispaly were breathtaking and magnificent. The entire itinerary was very well planned.
The itinerary certainly covered a wide range of sights and experiences in Japan. From bustling cities to the quiet beauty of the mountains, this tour had it all. Our fantastic guide ensured that we had an amazing experience and I cannot recommend this tour highly enough. If you want an unparalleled experience of the many facets of Japan coupled with top notch food and accommodation, do yourself a favour and book this tour - you won’t regret it.
Very good tour, unique experiences, excellent food and hotels. Tour guide went out of his way to make our time in Japan special, he was informative and super organised.
Fantastic trip
good tour length
Wonderful trip in a small group and fantastic guide. Saw a variety of sites and had many local foods.
It was great. I was able to see and do most everything I wanted while I was in Japan. Excellent hotels and good service at the hotels.
We were able to see many sites throughout Japan, and we did not feel rushed on most days. A couple of last minute changes were made in regard to our activity choices which were a bit disappointing, but we still had a wonderful time and would definitely recommend this trip.
Very much worth it! By far the best of many insight tours I've take. Small suggestion -- please consider including a Kabuki and/or sumo wrestling experience.
It’s a good itinerary but made great by the special experiences and fabulous tour director.
Well planned tour and our tour director was fabulous.
Tour guide was great, the rest was underwhelming. Too many rooms with 2 small beds instead of one large bed, too many dinners on our own, and too much travel (should have cut out the visit to the north and spent more time in Kyoto).
We got to see and experience Japan in a very calm and organised manner, saw everything we expected and more. We had ample free time which was very good to. Our tour guide was just wonderful and worked very hard to ensure that everyone on the tour was happy. She was professional and very knowledgeable, she made the tour very enjoyable.
It was not up to your other luxury gold travel. The Director was not as strong, you did have the local guides which would give deep local history. This tour only gave modern history - which we know. There were some power elements, but the guide was not strong and I got tired of only hearing her voice for almost 2 weeks. She was very kind and organized. Makes me think I might need to consider other travel companies.
Two main points. Firstly, we think the itinerary tour should be reversed - start from the north Hirosaki and move south to Hiroshima. It is cold in the north of Honshu and hot in the south but also this would take members from the country side of traditional Japan down to the cities and dense urban areas of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. The second point is that too much time was allowed for free time/shopping instead of spending more time at historic and religious sites and museums.
Full on, very interesting.
Your guide was incredible and made the trip so special for everyone!
The itinerary was amazing but for one exception. Many of us would have rather done the overnight bag for Aomori (especially considering we were in the pajamas provider) and come back that night to Tokyo for extra time in Tokyo. So much to do there and only 1.5d on this itinerary. Also, my hotel room in Tokyo was not up to par as compared to the others on this trip. The room was dirty, the ventilation in my second stay had an issue with a noise so I had to turn it off to sleep. Need an update for Toyko hotel. The Conrad is similar price and closer to some of the sites we visited. My guide, was THE BEST!. So kind and helpful. The nights alone for me, she gave me great options for places to eat and suggestions of what to do. She was so kind, helpful and informative. She made the trip the success it was!!! Don't lose her. The one day we split in Tokyo, we had a new person for our sushi making and he didn't even sit w us or translate what the chef was telling us to do. He was missing in action. On the bus, he was yelling information to us as a pop quiz. Not fun for vacation. I missed Misa!!!! Such charm!!! Love the services provided by this tour, all the transportation, even to and from my home, the curated experiences were one of a kind. The ease of traveling with 6 bullet trains and 7 cites in 10d!!! took care of it all!! What a great vacation!
Most places we visited either lunch or Hiroshima there were far to many people for us & I got panicked attacks & had to get outside
The itinerary did not include a visit to the Shibuya Lookout which I think should have been included as it is an iconic tower in Tokoyo.
Basically, a good itinerary. Would have preferred more time in Kyoto, Sendai and the Oriase Gorge.
The trip was overall really good, the hotels were beautiful. I think a little too much was packed in to each day. I would have liked more free time. Most of the included meals were excellent with a couple of exceptions. The food at the welcome dinner at the hotel was just ok. The buffet lunch at Fujiyama Terrace at Highland Resort Hotel was unpleasantly crowded and just not a great experience. Prior to the trip, the instructions indicated that we could only take the tiniest of bags ( something like 11” by 12”) on the bulletin trains but this was far from true - small carryon bags and even small roller bags and backpacks fit. These are all minor complaints, though. Our guide was great and went out of her way to help an elderly tour participant on our trip who was alone. One more thing, not about the itinerary. I live 55 miles from the airport, 5 miles outside your limit for transportation to and from home airport. According to my travel agent, I couldn’t meet the driver somewhere else within the 50 mile limit! It had to be my own house. If true this is ridiculous.
The itinerary was very average - there were too many temples visited, when a place was interesting our time was always limited
Comprehensive and very enjoyable tour Excellent guide Superb accommodation
An excellent sampling of many areas and cultural experiences.
We covered a lot of ground, with some experiences that were unique to this tour. Loved taking the bullet trains. Friendly, informative guide. Nice group of people. Would have liked to have a couple more dinners on our own. Overall, we had a great time.
A good itinerary that could be tweaked Kyoto should have at least an evening walk with guide rather than a day walk where we could not appreciate the night life of Kyoto— too little time to do it on our own The hotel at Oirase Gorge was mediocre with medioce buffet meals ( this was a last minute substitute as the original hotel at the Gorge could not accommodate the group ) Meals were generally adequate except the lunch at Kyoto and the last night’s dinner in Tokyo which was spectacular! Our tour guide was efficient and great — just wish he made of an effort to engage with us and provided more planned information on Japan while we were in the bus for those hours ( especially the drive from Mt. Fuji to Tokyo ) For the price i expected a somewhat smaller group and far better quality meals ( like the farewell night’s dinner )
There were two incidences on this trip, the first one was arriving at the Hotel in Osaka after a 14hr flight plus 8 hour time difference and getting a letter from Luxury Gold to state that there were two nights on the tour where an overnight bag was required. I never bring an extra bag and was upset about this, as it meant I had to buy one, plus listening to our travelling Concierge it appears that this is part of the trip but is not mentioned in the Itinerary. An email should have been sent to everyone before we travelled to notify us. The second one is our last Hotel in the Oriase Gorge was not available for some reason (not explained), and we were sent to another one which was an hour and half drive from the *Personal details removed by Feefo* This Hotel was jam packed with Japanese people on their holidays, it wasn't the standard of the Hotel that we were meant to be in and the pillow on the bed was as hard as a rock!
On day 9 of the tour we were scheduled for a stay at a hotel on a river at the entrance of a gorge. Our group was not supposed to be more than 19, but we were over booked to 24. The hotel couldn’t accommodate 24, so we got relocated to a new hotel 1:15 bus ride away. The 1:30 minute added bus ride was not appreciated! We also were not staying next to the river and nature. This was at the end of our journey and we already traveled a lot.
We enjoyed all components of the itinerary. Accommodations were excellent, except for one glitch where our hotel was overbooked and we had to stay in an alternate property. Food was superb and luxury gold’s attention to detail with respect to food intolerances for my traveling companion and myself was impeccable. In our opinion, the tour contains “too much of a good thing”. In an effort to see so many sites, we often did not have sufficient time to enjoy the place we were visiting, such as a shrine or garden. We realize that opinions differ about this and some people would prefer to get a look at as many things as possible, however, we would be happy to give up one stop in order to spend more time at each individual place. It’s also worth noting that the majestic Japan tour maximum cap is 24, which diverse from the 18 posted on the general website. That probably would not have eliminated it from consideration, but it would’ve been nice to know ahead of time.
The itinerary was badly planned.it is hard to understand why we visited Osaka. The venues visited in Kyoto were not the top tourist venues and should have been. The guide improved as the week went on but was not good on giving us the history and culture of Japan and seemed uninterested and detached. Visiting the number of locations as a taster of Japan was interesting but it was a badly planned itinerary at the start. Having travelled so far and paid for a luxury product it did not meet our high expectations. Having previously travelled with Insight to Egypt the less than excellent package on this Japan trip means we are unlikely to use your company again. The trip did not reach our expectations and should have been better organised and delivered more of an exclusive Japan experience.
Natsu is an amazing person. Excellent tour guide. Knowledgeable, prepared, artful and entertaining, managing a big group of 24 skilfully. We really got immersed in the culture, food, city and rural areas.
Itinerary great. Website was very troublesome. Had trouble with delivery of Final itinerary 21 days before departure. Said it was unavailable. Had to change password as requested and could not access Travel Portal. It turned out okay, but was unsettling in the weeks up to departure.
It was an amazing trip, we saw so much from the amazing cities, Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima to Oirase gorge in the snow country. We saw Mt Fuji unencumbered by cloud, and cherry blossoms at their peak at Hirosaki Castle. I slso loved the seaside lunch at Matsushima Bay. There were many feature meals included, I felt I gained an appreciation of Japanese cuisine. We took part in a tea ceremony, visited many beautiful temples, and had conversation with a maiku (trainee geisha). And many fabulous rides on the famous bullet trains. Throughout our tour the wonderful *Personal details removed by Feefo* was at the helm, guiding us, translating, leading us deftly through crowded situations. And above all, delighting and entertaining us I was in awe of her organisational skills, and the effort she put in to ensure everything was perfect for us. I would highly recommend this tour .
Our tour concierge, *Personal details removed by Feefo* was the best! She made our Japan experience very special. Saw tons of sights and we were provided first class hotel stays and meals. The people of Japan are so welcoming and so service oriented.
I really enjoyed the broad range of activities and experts brought into the mix. Hotels all met or exceeded my expectations. Meals also kept up with my expectation of local food, encompassing everything from daily to gourmet choices. Transportation was highlighted by extensive use of the bullet train, allowing our group to see a much greater area in reasonable time. Overall, an outstanding selection of places to visit, lodging choices and movement of the tour group! We'll be recommending this tour to our friends for the foreseeable future!
The itinerary was okay. The place is chosen to go on the itinerary were not necessarily interesting. Particularly wanted to do the Rope to see Mount Fuji but our guy kept saying that the lines would be too long and we didn't do it. We are never going back to Japan and were willing to wait in the line but instead we went to a museum that we were not interested in. The optional dinners need to be explained before we sign up for them. The restaurants chosen were not five star restaurants at all. The shabu-shabu dinner was in a very shabby place . For luxury trip, we had to pay for every extra thing we ordered even something as cheap as $1 for a bowl of rice. The walking tour in Tokyo was ridiculous because we just walked through the district without stopping . It was not entirely the luxury trip that we had visualized. Regretting our decision to sign up for LG for New Zealand in December. The tour director needs to have more autonomy. She did not go outside the box at all.
It is not worth what they charge. And the itinerary is seriously flawed. Spending only one day in Kyoto is simply wrong. The trip north to Sendai and Aomori involves a lot of train and bus rides with very little time available to explore and experience the culture. The guides had limited language skills. Look closely and compare to other luxury tour operators before considering this option. We were big fans of Insight , having taken multiple trips with them . This one was a major disappointment!
The tour was enjoyable but not particularly luxurious. It was overpriced. The meals included were good but they were not enough of them.
The hotels were very nice and what i would expect on a luxury trip. The breakfasts were good. Meeting the Hiroshima survivor was amazing. Japan itself was amazing. Some of the dinners were good including the Tepanyaki, but a few were not very good. Especially the second to last night. Kitchy place. Bad food. Frankly, the tour wasn't as nice as we expected. I would not pay the money for Luxury gold again. I paid for a Luxury trip and the tour had more of the feel of a budget trip. When the tour guide was not around it was much discussed among the group that the quality of the tour wasn't that nice. Why 1 star? Because of the amount of money I spent on the trip it should have been much much nicer. 1. There were too many people on the trip. When I called, they said they would limit to about 18. There were 24. It made everything very cumbersome so they could squeeze in profits. 2. We were supposed to stay 2 nights in Aomori. However, they claimed the hotel was under renovation. It was much more likely that they let too many people on the trip. We instead stayed those days in Sendai, which resulted in an 10+ hours of travel during the day for just a few hours of touring just to say we made it to Aomori. We didn't even have enough time to see the inside of Hirosaki Castle. Just a walk by. We were rushed quickly from thing to thing so they could say we did it. Most of the day was spent sitting in trains/buses. They had to provide a to-go bento box on the train back just so we would be able to eat dinner. The actual touring time was incredibly rushed and unpleasant. 3. The tea ceremony was terrible. It was 24 of us crammed into a small room that wasn't made for that many people. It was incredibly awkward. And honestly the tea was unpleasantly bitter. I've had matcha tea before... it's not supposed to be like that. Probably not made properly as they struggled to serve such a large group. 4. No matter how many time i asked the tour guide for advice or help to find something I would like it was a big blowoff. For example, i wanted to buy ceremonial grade green tea to bring back. She suggested I go to a department store. I mean really! 5. We had a quick walk through of Gion District, but she didn't want us ot linger.... just wanted to quickly head back to the bus. Luckily I realized that there was a great shopping area next to the Gion district. There was no time alloted to go there, but I hopped off the bus which was headed back to the hotel for free time anyway. Best shopping area and it wasn't built into the trip. Ridiculous! Green Tea shops, japanese goods, and all sorts of interesting things. 6. Ironically the tour touted a great shopping afternoon after the sushi making. It was awful. The shops were all Gucci, Versaci and european high end shopping. We all agreed that it was a waste of time since we all have that at home. It wasn't anything Japanese or interesting. 7. The tour guide admitted that she set up the tour to avoid very crowded areas. She set the pace to rush from place to place. It was very clear that she was impatient to wait. We felt rushed through the places we visited and almost no time allotted to be spent in any gift shop at those places. Many people on the tour felt the same way. Many people expressed this but it fell on deaf ears.
Excellent sight seeing. Convenience of travel around the whole country made it totally worth it. Some more historical context would have been helpful.
It was a great trip and most informative BUT the pace was intense. Most of the people on this trip were senior citizens like me. Mini-breaks DURING THE DAY (just a few, not every day) would have been helpful. This is a quibble but still worth sharing. Recognize the demographics of your LUXURY GOLD trips.
makes the most of all your time on the tour. Great care was taken to show you big city life as well as the rural differences. Great food choices.
It was a wonderful schedule that included so much and we really got an amazing idea of Japan and its culture! Our tour guide was so nice and friendly and healthful as well! Highly recommend this tour to everyone
We were looking forward to have memorable trip but total disappointment. Did not cover major highlighted sight seeing in Tokyo, Kyoto Did not go to Oraise gorge which was our must do in trip and cancelled day before. End up in Sendai with Sake and whisky making to fill up the time was not interesting to me as I don’t drink alcohol. Vegetarian lunch and dinner was total waste . Barely ate any. Was left hungry . Even my wife was not happy with trip. Total waste of money with concierge which was difficult to understand
If more time was spent on sightseeing instead of lunch dinner would have been great. For us who are vegetarian lunch and dinner offered was awful. Even though mentioned what we can have, not offered as requested. Was looking for great trip but totally disappointed.
We enjoyed this trip. We’re disappointed that the itinerary had been changed though and we were not informed of this until we had arrived in Japan. One of the reasons we booked this trip was we thought we would spend a night at the gorge but ended up with three nights in Sendai instead. Also our guide for this trip was very lovely and knowledgeable but quite difficult to understand for a totally English speaking group.
We felt that to much time was spent in Sendai. It felt that the tour was searching for places of interest to fill the time.
Itinerary should not have changed without prior notice in writing. We did not get what we paid for. Disappointing
We met our travel guide on the evening of the 2nd. First thing we observed was her very poor English skills. We thought we might be in trouble and we were right. We spent one full day in Osaka, staying at the Imperial Hotel. While the hotel was quite nice, the location was not. Other than the hotel dining options and the local convenience stores, our dining options were limited. We also did not see any shopping opportunities nearby. We next traveled to Hiroshima where we toured the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. A delightful woman who survived the atomic bombing lectured for an hour with interpreting. It was difficult to follow. On our way to lunch lost half our group. She had to double back to find them. is quite short and we asked her numerous times to keep the flag that we were following higher in the air but that request was unsuccessful. The delay in getting to the lunch venue resulted in half of our meals sitting waiting for us. The food was supposed to be warm but it wasn’t. It was quite good in any case. That same day we traveled again up to Kyoto. Quite a few of us were disappointed we spent only one day in Kyoto. We had very little time to shop during the day. We thought the choice of the hotel, The Thousand Kyoto was marvelous. A great location next to the awesome train station so after checking in, a few of us explored the train station shopping and dining areas. The following day we again traveled to the area around Mount Fuji. We had a so-so lunch at a hotel. Afterward, two in our group opted to see the kimono museum while the rest of us took in the views on a cable car. This resulted in dropping off the couple first and then the bus took us on to the cable car. There was confusion on when we all were to meet back at the bus because instructions were not clear. As a result, the bus had to go back to pick up the couple at the kimono museum. We went back with the bus ( stayed with the larger group at the cable car) and upon arriving my husband got off the bus to go look for them. The bus driver got off too but didn’t know who they were and he walked past them 3 times. We got them back on the bus and then the bus came back to pick up the rest of the group. Then we were off to a 3 hour bus trip into Tokyo. The hotel in Tokyo was in a good location but the service in the breakfast restaurant was terrible. We could not get our own coffee and after asking at least 3 times, we eventually got our coffee but it was after our meal was done. The tour of the National Museum was postponed until the Friday when we were supposed to return to Tokyo. The museum is closed on Monday’s, which you would think they would have known about. Instead we enjoyed the Askusa neighborhoods and was able to get in some good shopping. Several of us chose to learn the art of sushi making for lunch which was great fun. After spending one full day in Tokyo, we took a 3 hour train ride north to Sendai. When we arrived we then took a 1 hour bus ride to the Matsushima Bay area to a local inn. So after traveling 4 hours, we found the inn to be quite run down and very shabby looking. The vinyl tablecloths were old and torn. Our lunch was plated and waiting for us when we arrived. Who knows how long the raw fish had been sitting there. The food wasn’t very good. After lunch, we boarded the bus again and went to the bay to get on a very old motorboat. It wasn’t in very good shape and as we motored around the bay for about 45 minutes looking at small islands with trees on them, several men in our group decided they should figure out where the life preservers were! We made it back to the dock to walk to an area where the local high school kids performed the tea ceremony. At the end of all of this, the consensus was that it all was a waste of time. Generally, everyone wished that we could have had an opportunity to experience a tea ceremony in Kyoto. The hotel in Sendai was quite nice though. The next day we again traveled by bus to one of the original castles where we walked around the grounds. We would have very much liked to have gone into the castle but we were told there was no time for that as had other things planned. Afterword we traveled to a Saki brewery where we toured with the president. It was quite nice. The last day in Sendai we traveled by bus to a whisky factory which was fun. The grounds were beautiful. The dinner that night at a local restaurant was quite tourist-y and the food again was so-so. I think a lot of us were ready to not have sushi and sashimi at every meal! Three nights in Sendai was too much. We returned the next day to Tokyo again by train and this time we toured the National Museum. We had a final dinner that night with everyone at a local restaurant which again was so-so. The logistics of moving our suitcases from one city to another went very well. Each time we checked into a new hotel, our luggage was waiting for us. Overall, our opinion is that this tour was not worth the money we paid and we paid a lot! Our guide was terrible having a poor grasp of English. Her directions were often confusing and when she was speaking on the bus tours or when we were walking around, most of us tuned her out. She would say things like “Oh, look at that!” We would have no idea what she was looking at since she seldom said for us to look to the right or look to the left. Because she often walked so fast, as mentioned above, she lost half of the group. She seldom held up her flag high enough for us to follow. As a matter of fact, the group told me that I had to continue to wear my bright pink raincoat so they could follow me! Also one of the tour members would proudly wear bright shirts and we told him that he had to continue that practice so we could follow him! One morning a gentleman was late joining the group in the lobby because she had told us several different times to meet. I personally got in the habit of asking loudly for clarification for the evening’s events or the timeline for the following morning before departing the bus so we all could be on the same page. Most of the people on this tour were world travelers and had experienced excellent tour guides. Two of the couples who often travel together told us that it was their intention to not tip Noriko at all to express their displeasure. We tipped her but not what was the recommended amount. I hope this feedback helps. Kindly &
For the price paid it was not the luxury experience we expected! Too little time in Kyoto. “Concierge “ service promised was not delivered. Travel to northern .japan a waste of time. Very disappointed and sorry we booked it.
I have already given & sent you my feedback on thi trip.
Total waste of money and time, Total ridiculous schedules, and absolutely no time to enjoy!
Overpriced, communication issues w guide, poor itinerary , too many temples, too much time wasted on travel. Please do yourself a favor and find another tour. We should be issued a refund.
Very overpriced, double check the itinerary carefully, too many temples, significant language barrier of the guides, hotel choices questionable, should cost considerably less. Any refunds available??
Was a great itinerary however would have liked to spend another day in Kyoto and one day less in Sendai. Didn’t do anything the last day in Sendai anyway as it was a very late start at 11 am and just travelled back to tokyo
