Cycling the Cape and Winelands

I can't tell you how enjoyable this trip was. We were 8 people in the group, as well as our brilliant guide Ado and the excellent driver Gavin. So much work went into making this trip just amazing. Everything worked out just perfectly, we had no punctures or problems at all. Ado's knowledge of South Africa and its history was incredible as well as the entire continent. The group all got on well with one another and we stayed at some really nice hotels along the way. The only thing is I wanted to do it all over again!

Windy but wonderful

Amazing scenery, good food and wine (at very reasonable prices) and I laughed every day. The group was the usual Exodus mix of interesting, well-travelled people who love cycling. The long straight roads in strong winds were a challenge - even on e-bikes, but I thoroughly enjoyed the climbs (apart from one on what I think was the hottest day and trying to conserve my battery) and the downhills were very enjoyable, especially down to Barrydale with dramatic storm clouds on the horizon. Passing an ostrich was also a highlight for me. We didn't race - it was static in a field.

Great Trip, Great Group

An excellent trip with a great group and group leader. The itinerary enabled a real mix of cycling in the countryside and by the sea. It was a bit windy for a couple of days and there were a couple of testing climbs but it was all very manageable.

Challenging yet rewarding cycling with stunning views, wine and food!

If you are after a trip that is more than just cycling, this is for you! The first 3 days are tough, but you get challenging mountain pass's followed by exhilarating downhills. You cycling through a variety of landscapes, from coastal roads and paths, to the arid desert of the little Karoo, vast countryside and plush mountainous roads. No day is the same which is nice! The food and wine is also a big bonus.

Cycling with stunning scenery and glorious warm sunshine

We have done many Exodus cycling trips and this was up there with the best. We have 4 main criteria for rating our trips (the country itself, the cycling, the food and the group of people) and each varies depending on where we go. This trip rated highly on all 4. Cape Town itself is absolutely stunning, feels safe, extremely friendly people, lots to do. The scenery on the trip is beautiful - mountains, vineyards and incredible coastline. The standard of food was very high everywhere and add in the local wine, we ate very well (favourable exchange rate makes it so cheap). The cycling has it's challenging moments but is generally fine if you are fit and a regular cyclist. The balance of cycling and rest days has been carefully thought out and the guides were good at managing a group with cyclists of different speeds. Lovely mix of activities along the way including wine tasting, visits to National parks to see animals (Penguins, baboons, ostriches etc), short hikes, Southern most tip of Africa. We had a lovely group of people and had a lot of fun, expertly looked after by Ado and Brad.

Brilliant Trip

A fab trip with beautiful and varied scenery, some challenging cycling with lots of wildlife along the way and great company. Most of the accommodation was really lovely and some quite special places. Restaurants choices were good and the food was excellent. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t on our side so the itinerary was changed to accommodate the conditions for a couple of days but this in no way detracted from a brilliant holiday.

Fantastic scenery, challenging cycling

A challenging 3 with plenty of uphill. Some quaint places to visit and stay. Luckily the majority of the group were like minded people.

This trip was awesome. One of the best cycling holidays I've done. The contrast in the scenery that you cycle through is amazing; mountains, passes, vineyards, the coast fabulous. Wine tasting at the end of a ride. Oh and the penguins!

Great cycling, quite hilly but stunning, very varied. Great accommodation and very varied. Loved the penguins.

Wonderful Country, Wonderful Ride

A challenging ride, for a rating of 3, through the beautiful countryside and coastline of this small part of Africa. Stopping for a few tastings of wonderful wines and visiting many iconic landmarks along the way. Add to this the natural enthusiasm and deep knowledge from the guide and a lovely group of people to share - this really was the most memorable and amazing trip.

Ride those coastal roads!

Stunning cycling on rugged coastal roads, spectacular gorges, though balanced by less inspiring cycling alongside wheat fields on long straight undulating roads. Some cycling on main roads with hard shoulders. Overall, cycling is a great way to see the area. Plenty of wildlife seen, land based: springbok, ostriches, blue cranes, hawks, buzzards, antelope, hamsters, tortoise, and the big 5 wet ones: penguins, seals, dolphins, sharks and whales. The wine estates were pristine, wine tastings were slick. Also plenty of craft breweries for the ale drinkers. The friendliness and service at all restaurants, cafes and accommodation was excellent, with a real desire to please.

A great holiday/adventure

Our first Exodus trip, and what a wonderful experience. The accommodation, cycling, trip leadership and support were all first class. There are two elements out of their hands - the flight (in our case with BA on superannuated 747s) and the people who pay for the holiday. Our tour party was excellent, a great and disparate group of interesting and enthusiastic people. The less said about BA's performance the better. If we'd been unlucky enough to have been booked on the Thursday flight back to

A stunning holiday!

If you're looking for a great mix of exercise, wine-tasting, wildlife spotting and camaraderie, this is the trip for you! As this was our first organised holiday we approached it with some trepidation, but our expectations were surpassed many times over. Every day brought new experiences - different landscapes and vistas, unfamiliar but delicious wines, the highest quality local dishes, friendly hosts and quirky accommodation, and a developing bond between all participants as we slogged up the inclines and sailed down the descents.

Cycling The Cape And Winelands

A wonderful cycle trip and an excellent introduction to the Cape (and South African wine!). Some great cycling (Franschheok Pass, The Whale Coast) mixed with plenty of wine tasting and a day's recuperation whale watching in Hermanus. The cycling itself is graded as moderate though a grading of moderate/challenging would be more appropriate, especially if you are not a keen cyclist.

It's only when you look back.....

Its only when you look back that you realize that, the scenery really was that stunning, the mountains really had that grandeur, the group really was that friendly. I loved every day of the tour, from the beautiful little towns of Stellenbosch and Franceshoek, to the beautiful Cape Agulhas, to the breathtaking Chapmans Peak Drive. Wine tasting, experiencing local foods and all of it with the stunning backdrop of mountains and the beautiful fields of vines. Our guides, Roger and Siintje worked relentlessly to ensure our enjoyment and wellbeing.

Cycling the Cape Winelands

An all round excellent trip. If taking your own bikes take a road bke. It is definitely Not for mountain bikes. We took our folding mountain bikes which we have used on previous trips but even with semi slicks could have done with 700c wheels and 21mm slick tyres. The wind and heat over the central sections was killing. Having to actually pedal downhill to keep going at times. The highlights were Franchoek and Stellenbosch with the wine tasting, Franchhoek pass and Troudapas, the whale coast from Simonstown to Gordon's bay ( a long day at 90km with an absolute killer of a hill to start after breakfast, most of us made it up), Chapmans peak down to Hout Bay. Recommend to anyone but be reasonably fit before you go. You will be a lot fitter at the end.

Wheels, Wines & Waves

A great trip; at times the weather was a little on the warm side for cycling. A fun mix of cycling, wine, food and sightseeing and the overall experience was made even better by a great group of people.

Cape and the winelands

A good combination of varied scenery inland and coastal, towns and city and tours Food and accommodation were good. Good bus used and bikes ok though I could have done with a lower gearing a couple of times Rides were too often on busy main roads albeit usually with a cycle lane it isn't very relaxing or sociable to have too ride single file with fast noisy traffic wizzing past. Quite often felt rushed with meals and tastings sometimmes due to the leaders having to cook our dinner which was often not ready till quite late. Is it really necessary for them to cook Could have done with an extra day in Cape town to fit more in. With only two half days you can't fit in Table Mountain, Botanic gardens, Roben Island and the city itself let alone shopping and relaxing on the beach

Cycling South africa

Described as a moderate cycling holiday, although my husband and I have a reasonable fitness level, and coped with the cycling, members of the group stuggled with the terrain, and I don't feel moderate is a good description for this tour. Enjoyed the holiday in general, good group of people, and guides, weather was not always kind to us, and some of the accommodation was under par.

AnonymousOn Jan 30, 2017

Cycling the Cape & Winelands

South Africa is certainly a place you can easily fall in love with. Great wine, great food and perfect cycling on gorgeous long undulating roads. Although there are a couple of short steep climbs they are certainly doable providing you have a good level of fitness. I finally conquered hill climbing without stopping just going at my own pace, in fact Chapmans Peak was so amazing I wanted to go back down and climb it again. Our guides ensured our safety at all times and looked after us very well, from organising lunches to sorting restaurants for dinner in particular our favourite liquorice allsorts snack. If you love cycling and wine then you'll love this trip!!! Made also great by a lovely bunch of people.

Exodus Excellence in South Africa

A varied trip made special by an outstanding tour leader. Great food and wine, but much more importantly challenging but doable cycling through a diverse Western Cape....from spectacular coastal rides to open countryside pedalling, from fast downhill stretches to hill climbs, from long challenging days to shorter rides (all broken into manageable sections).

AnonymousOn Jan 30, 2017

cycling the cape

the views are fantastic the cycling is good but I was a bit disappointed with the tour guide he either wanted to cook for us or take us to a restaurant of his choice so we never had a chance to look around the towns we visited. It would have been nice to have a choice a few evenings just to do your own thing .

Cape and Winelands Cycling Tour

Very enjoyable trip. Wynand, the guide, was good company, very informative and kept the group well organised throughout the trip. Beautiful country, particularly enjoyed the coastal areas and Cape Peninsula. As usual, large group meals can be restricting.

Cycling the Western cape and Winelands.

Excellent trip, totally wonderful experience. The cycling was great but be prepared to be cycling into a head wind most days! Accomdation overall was excellent but 2/3 nights were less so. Lovely scenery and plenty of wildlife to spot.

Cycling the Vineyards and Wineries

No matter how much reading you do, you can never be totally prepared for any cycle tour. There are always surprises in store and of course the people you meet, the guides and fellow cyclists are a key factor in the ultimate overall experience. The scenery on this tour was dramatic and at times absolutely fabulous, especially in the 2nd half when we returned to Cape Town along the coast. There were times when the weather was a little difficult and on one stretch of coastline with mountainous cliffs on one side and a sheer drop to the sea on the other, we were frequently 'blown about' or stopped in our tracks by the wind in our faces. It all added to the excitement and sheer enjoyment of the cycling, it certainly wasn't boring! The guides were excellent, they didn't allow us to cycle when it was too dangerous but at the same time we were able to tackle some demanding climbs and descents and the cycling was generally just within the capabilities of the group.

AnonymousOn Jan 30, 2017

Brilliant Experience

The Western Cape area of South Africa was so different to my first experience in the Kruger area. Outstanding scenery, well organised, fairly easy cycling, homely accommodation. The only negative would be the food and wine was INCREDIBLE so there is no chance of weight loss on this trip!

SOUTH AFRICA: CYCLING THE CAPE & WINELANDS

Overall, a well organised trip with spectacular scenery and good winetasting. Accommodation was variable in style but most was very good, and the cottages at Franschoek were delightful. The guesthouse at Barrydale was also excellent. a good balance of cycling and sightseeing, although a little more time to sightsee would be good. There were also a fair number of transfers on the bus, but maybe this is unavoidable.

Cycling Adventure Cape and Winelands

At least in part for the physical and emotional excitement, adventure activities in South Africa offer something for everyone, from first timers to extreme to adventurers. Choices seem to range from laid back stargazing, strolling to serious hiking, cycling, mountaineering and everything in between. It was not a difficult decision for me to press the " book it" button after reading the trip notes. Famous for its stunning coastline, big surf, blue skies, diverse terrain, sand dune landscapes and breathtaking mountains I had heard from many who have visited South Africa that it is a Country one can fall in love with. This trip offers all of the above complemented with visits to the winelands and of course the cycling which by the way was arduous at times. Yes it was difficult to leave after this adventure hosted by our energetic Leader Wynard Bezuidenhout with his "co pilot" Sifisio our Driver. A great team that delivered a flawless, well executed adventure from the onset until our final farewell at the airport. The trip was breath taking, my first trip with this tour company and certainly shall not be my last. A small group of 12 like minded people left having shared the most incredible experience together - fun and adventure while sharing travel stories along the way.

Is it really necessary for them to cook? Could have done with an extra day in Cape town to fit more in. With only two half days you can't fit in Table Mountain, Botanic gardens, Roben Island and the city itself let alone shopping and relaxing on the beach

Made also great by a lovely bunch of people.

cycling the cape and winelands

Outstanding! Wonderful scenery; mountains and hills, beach and seas, undulating plains. Fantastic food and wines, fascinating wildlife, attractive local accommodation, very few long transfers, time to relax at end of rides. Delightful cycling- at times challenging, but always rewarding. Blues skies and heat! Great group and leader.
