Itinerary

Experience the wild emerald coast of Brittany and its mysterious Celtic traditions by bike. Jutting into the Atlantic, Brittany sets itself apart from the rest of France in more ways than one. Strong Celtic traditions and rites of worship are evident in the prehistoric monuments and vestiges explored on this itinerary. The indigenous language of Breton, discernible on signs and buildings, conveys the proud sense of identity found within this region. Brittany's 1100km of wild coastline is home to spectacular walled villages that are best explored on foot and by bike. There is plenty of time to take in the breathtaking wonder of Mont St Michel, along with the 'pirate's town' of St Malo, quaint seaside villages and oyster and mussel farms along the way. Following canal towpaths into Brittany's interior of Argoat (meaning 'Land of the Woods') you can discover the ancient fairyland of Dinan and the picturesque fortress of Combourg, complete with the Lac Tranquille. An option to extend your cycle journey to the island of Jersey for the day, being only 80 minutes by ferry from St Malo, is highly recommended.

day 1Arrive St Malo

St Malo is a remarkable site, built at the mouth of the river Rance. It has been the subject of many disputes in the past due to its access to the sea and its position at the frontier between the Duchy of Normandy and the Kingdom of France. In the 16th century the port grew incredibly fast with the development of its fishing fleet and the discovery of Canada. Your hotel is situated a short walk from the fortifications.

day 2Cycle the coast to Cancale, continue to Dol de Bretagne (52km/32mi)

day 3Cycle to the magical island monastery of Mont St Michel, continue to Pontorson (28 or 48km/17.5 or 30mi)

day 4Pedal south to Saint James enroute to Fougeres (58km/36mi)

day 5Through woods and classic Brittany countryside to Combourg (52km/32mi)

day 6Through the Rance River Valley to Dinan (34km/21mi)

day 7Return to St Malo (34km or 65km/21 or 40mi)

day 8Trip concludes or optional extension to Jersey

Brittany Walled towns was a fantastic trip that everyone in my cycling group enjoyed . The scenery and weather was perfect and adding on our day trip on the ferry to Jersey was fantastic. I had an ebike and Patrick and Ingrid sorted out my mechanical problems by translating the issues to the bike mechanic who fixed them as a priority so i was back on the road quickly. The 2-3 star hotels and breakfasts were perfect for us and our luggage arrived with no problems to our next hotel. Well done to Anthony for helping us co-ordinate all of our trip and plane bookings nothing was too much trouble for him and any questions had a detailed email response very quickly.

Brittany Walled Towns 8 day self guided cycling was a great trip, riding along the coast with great views, eating freshly chucked oysters in Cancale, visiting the iconic Mont-St-Michel, cycling through rural countryside and many beautiful old villages. We used E-blinked which were great & the instructions and GPS app was very helpful. Would highly recommend this trip.

We absolutely loved the bike ride, don't rush on day 3 to Pontorson, pretty town but not much there and not many choices for dinner. Every other town was wonderful. Upgraded our accommodation but it was still only 3 star...would not spend the extra money.

We cycled through Brittany's walled towns. Round trip from St. Malo and we enjoyed it very much. The weather didn't cooperate most days. It seems that we hit a bad week, but we made the most of it. The towns we stopped over in was absolutely lovely. The accommodations was very well located and we enjoyed staying at all of them, except one where we found the room wasn't properly cleaned. The loaded the directions for our cycle each day onto our Garmin and that made the navigation very easy. We encountered a closed trail once, by could easily navigate around it. The scenery each day was absolutely beautiful. We made time to stop for some snacks in all the little towns and ate some amazing food. This was my third trip with them and will for sure be using them again.
