What an amazing trip! Our guide, Bibi, was incredible at finding the animals, getting us on the best angle to take pictures of them and answer all of our questions. He went above and beyond to make sure we were all comfortable! The trip has a lot of hours on the car and he made sure to take breaks so that we could all stretch and keep our energy :) Truly an unforgettable experience! Thank you Bibi for making this such an incredible trip for us!
Amazing tour. I can’t believe all the animals we saw… and how close our guide was able to get. KK, our leader, just made the tour with his skills and the care with which he did his job. Lots of great food, and great accommodation, even the bush camping! The team is great and I’ll definitely travel with Explore again.
I have wanted to go to Africa since i was a child and this trip was amazing. As a photographer many of my dreams were realized in seeing so many animals but I wanted more. Everyday was filled with animals I had only dreamed of seeing. But to capture their behavior and seeing them love was - a dream come true. Our guide Joe was truly the best with his 20 plus years of experience. We couldn't have had a better more experienced leader on this trip. He knew how to give us the best view for photos without infringing on the animals and keeping in mind there were sometimes other trucks posturing for a view or photos. The accommodations were planned perfectly giving us the super nice Batonka Lodge to begin and ease us into the rough camping, then back for a luxury night in Maun for a real shower, bathroom, pool and dining. Then out again to the houseboat for views on the river. I would have loved a few more days in the rough camp with all the animals rather than the long trip through Namibia heading back to Victoria Falls. As like I said, I wanted more, more, more of the animals. Batonka Lodge staff was amazing and I was very happy to become acquainted with some the staff the took perfect care of all of us. My only disappointment was that I was advised not to bring specialized photo equipment. I was the only person on the tour that was shooting an SLR and long lens. I would have brought an even longer lens for the trip if I had known it was okay and I will know for the next experience. I was the only American on the trip surround by 11 Brits who were all great. I had an amazing time and I'm still wading through my many 1000s of images. I plan on entering the Explore photo contest in hopes of winning a return trip.
What an epic adventure! Some of which must be attributed to our excellent tour guide Joe, who was assisted throughout the trip by great and friendly support staff at the camp sites and lodges. The number of animals and diverse birdlife seen totally exceeded expectations. There's a lot of travelling and camping without home comforts, however we felt this was made very clear in the holiday notes and in some ways added to the experience in a positive way. A special mention should also go out to William, Pape & Carlos who some how churned out a succession of really good three course meals just using a camp fire!
Our leader he was 10/10 in ever aspect. Amazing guy !
If you like African wildlife and don't mind the camping, a bit of dust and a bumpy road, this could be the trip for you. Bibi (our tour leader / driver / guide / game tracker / spotter / fountain of wildlife information) was amazingly good. His tracking skills are legendary - on one occasion he even tracked a rental vehicle down that had a puncture in the midst of a game reserve! The driver was clearly unaware and had wrecked the tyre by driving with it. We saw most of the "Big 5" multiple times including 4 different leopards and a pack of wild dogs with playful pups. Lots of other wildlife & birds too. We also saw 5 fresh kills with the predators still close by. Close viewing contact with the wildlife is likely. Be prepared for 2,500km of mainly ungraded dirt and gravel tracks! The accommodation alternates between 'glamping' and camping. This allows you to periodically get properly refreshed. The camp team conjured up fantastic meals in the middle of nowhere. The house boat experience was a bit of let down. The house boat cruise was about 2km along a 50-100m wide river. However we did do a boat trip in narrower channels from it. For me, Moremi was more delta-ish than the house boat area. The (optional) boat trip in Chobe was fantastic. Victoria Falls was a great start & end to the trip. Have lunch at the Victoria Safari Lodge for the feeding of vultures (1pm) rather than the Lookout Restaurant Cafe. Tips - A ski / face mask is advisable for the long transfer days to keep dust & wind out of the eyes. Wrap around sunglasses as a minimum. The vehicle is open sided and is capable of 80+kmph on tarred roads! - A sports bra would make travelling more comfortable for those well endowed. The dirt roads can be rather bouncy. - Apart from the tip kitty, guide tip and Chobe boat trip (do it!), we scarcely spent any cash. Rest was on 'plastic'. - Take a "Pocket Naturalist Guide - South Africa Wildlife" to help ID wildlife and birds.
Joe was a great leader. Keeping us in check, and providing us with a wealth of knowledge in both animal and bird life. His tracking skills were second to none. Camping was basic, but it allowed closer encounters with wildlife. Being sent to sleep with the sounds of lions and hippos was special. The itinerary was really well thought through, providing days of luxury between days of camping. Great food cooked on open fires, with all camp teams helpful and friendly. All in all a great experience. Botswana, you were special. Would recommend.
A great outfit. We had a wonderful time.
Botswana Wildlife Safari Our 14th Explore tour. Travelled as a couple. 10, including ourselves, on the tour plus guide - 2 couples, 1 family 3-some, 3 singles, plus 1 guide/driver. This Explore Botswana Wildlife Safari had many wonderful aspects. But, it wasn't without issues, some within Explore's control, others less so. A very big up to Titus, one of the best guides we have had. What with one party's late arrival, the family group's "missing in transit" luggage, and the camp attack - see later - he kept the tour on track and sniffed out numerous outstanding wildlife encounters. Was surprised though that Titus was solo. He did ALL the driving and guiding. All our other Explore trips have had a driver in addition to the guide. It is concerning the number of working hours he has to do during the trip. The bush camping was better than expected (we have an Explore reference point, having camp-safari with them in Kenya 15 years ago). Roomy tents, comfortable bed and bedding - though the single pillow needed padding out. And the personal toilet and shower at the rear of each tent worked fairly well, though hot water for shower limited. I won't list all the wildlife seen. Everything you'd expect, and much of it several times eg multiple prides of lions, multiple elephant herds with many young, even rare wmild dog families. 1 leopard, eventually. Regrettably no cheetah - but that's safari for you. And a good feel for a multitude of different environments - river side, open plains, forested, bush,... On the downside... we found the main food very disappointing. The occasional "processed meat" dish were quite nice - BBQ burgers, once, lamb mince, once - as were the camp made bread, and breakfasts. But the many evening meat dishes had tough, dry, poor cut meat. Unsauced, only bottle table sauces. All these would have been better as stews, and easier for the camp cooks to manage. Most veg were almost raw, especially cauliflower and broccoli, of which there was a lot, and tepid! And the meagre 2 spoonfuls of "soup" were baby-food puree and barely tepid. The "minestrone" was essentially congealed gravy. All the soups would have been improved by the simple addition of a cup of boiling water. Puddings barely amounted to a meagre amount. Not aware of anyone in group having any "hygiene" issues but there was no visible group hygiene precautions insisted upon (unlike the compulsory pre-meal hand washing on our Kenya trip) . No encouragement to the group to sanitise before accessing communal food. And no Titus hygiene precautions when he was setting out the various in-transit shared picnic lunches. Comparing the Explore trip notes to reality - the journey times were often vastly underestimated, to the significant detriment of the tour's enjoyment. In particular both the day 9 "We should arrive at Thamo Telele around lunchtime." and the day 10 to the houseboat for "lunch" were VASTLY underestimated. In both cases it was midafternoon 3pm-ish when we arrived. In fact unless we had left at stupid-o-clock in the morning there is no way we could have arrived at either location "for lunch". At Thamo there was no time even for any freshen up after a 7am start and 8 hour open vehicle journey, but straight into buffet "lunch" (actually 3pm), which we had to pay for even though there was no alternative (many kilometres outside Maun). I would seriously question Thamo as a stop. Whilst the accommodation was quite luxurious, the having a tour of their captive animals (mostly giraffes) in a confined environment felt at odds with the "wildlife safari" of the whole tour. Timing wise, similarly we did not arrive for "lunch" on the boat. Merely mid afternoon tea and cake. The cave painting trip, from the boat on day 11, took over 7 hours return trip - it's not just up the road. The houseboat cruise itself was only 1 mile upstream, moor up for the night, 1 mile return. But the wildlife river cruise from the houseboat was memorable. The most significant incident was overnight day 2 in our fixed (luxury) tents near Chobe. 4 of the group's 6 tents, including ours, were broken into, access gained by a knife slit to the canvas of each tent. I heard a noise and sat up, and that probably stopped entry into our tent, and we lost nothing. However, significant goods - cameras, electronics, binoculars, day bags, cash & cards, and 1 passport (thankfully later recovered from bushes nearby) were stolen from the other 3. Titus/Explore moved us to a holiday villas gated compound for the following night. And over the following days noticeable time had to be spent, for those who had losses, sorting out police visits, reports etc. Overall it is a recommendation. The night 2 incident was unfortunate external factors (though hopefully that camp had improved it's security measures). But some of the timetable / timescale needs a rethink. And the food rethought, even with the same ingredients.
The Explore Botswana Wildlife trip was totally amazing. So well planned with a gradual 'break in' to wild camping and a lovely lodge experience afterwards before the houseboat trip and ending back at the luxurious Batonka Lodge for two nights. Our Tour Guide, Joe was simply fantastic. Due to his extensive knowledge of the tracks/terrain and his understanding of animal behaviours we were able to see so many wild animals close up. Furthermore, Joe always had a flask of hot water and biscuits for a break during our game drives. In addition, at each location where we stayed the local 'crews' were brilliant. So helpful and happy. The food was delicious. For me, 'wild camping' was tough - I missed running water and a flashing toilet. This said, the wild camping ensured we saw a variety of animals in their natural surroundings at close range. I also found the 5.30am starts a challenge but again, the early mornings ensured we saw as many animals as possible. Plus we witnessed some fantastic sunrises and sunsets. We also had 'free time' most afternoons. The three young men who looked after the camp and made all our meals were great, as was the food, all made on an open fire. I highly recommend this trip. What a wonderful holiday where many happy memories were made and new friendships formed.
Exceeded all our expectations. Tour leader (Joe) was excellent: locating animals, knowledge of all animals (birds to elephants) with great driving on sandy roads and network of other guides. We saw elephants, Giraffe, hyenas cheetahs, painted dogs, rhino and many, many more. Scenes of a pride of lions tucking in to breakfast, hyenas trying to steal a pack of painted dogs kill and a herd of elephants passing tentatively in front of the jeep made the trip really memorable. Wild camping in the middle of the reserve with animals passing through was fantastic. Best to take USD in cash (we took $1,500 which was fine to include tips). Good itinerary but think houseboat would have been better in Chobe. Camp food was good. Expect early (leave at 6.30am) game drives to have the best chance to see the wildlife.
I have been on a lot of Explore trips. This was an excellent one for those keen to explore Africa and its wildlife. The guide was excellent and seemed to know exactly where to go to find the best sights of lions, cheetahs, leopards etc. it also included the chance to see and experience both the Okavango Delta and the Victoria Falls, both of which are awesome. Best to be aware however that most of the tour is seated in the back of the Safari truck. There is very little walking and this can lead to some frustration and a need to stretch one’s feet at times. Also the accommodation varies from an excellent lodge, to some very basic tent nights with bucket showers and dug out toilets!
A fantastic trip which far exceeded my expectations from the first to last day. We saw more than we could have ever hoped for thanks to our experienced guide. We saw lions, leopards cheetah, hippo, wild dogs, hyena, elephants, giraffes. The list is endless, there was so much to see and experience.. The guide and support staff were excellent. I have so many memories, all happy.
We had a terrific time on this Safari, due in no small part to our fabulous group leader Titus. He has a terrific knowledge of his homeland which he is determined to pass on to future generations, and his passion for the animals and the natural beauty of his surroundings is clear for all to see. We travelled many miles between the various campsites & lodges & Titus was with us all the way which was comforting. We wouldn't have fully appreciated many of the clues in the countryside had he not been there, as many times he would spot tracks in the sand & stop the truck to explain to us which animal had left the tracks & where they were headed. A very engaging & patient guy to which we owe much gratitude for making this such a great holiday. .
Fantastic safari tour. We saw wonderful African scenery and lots of animals very close up. The basic camping in the wild was a great experience. Hyenas and elephants visited our campsites and we could hear lions roaring during the nights. I would wholeheartedly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a safari adventure. There was a nice mixture of itinerary and lodging. Our guide Bibi and his crew were first rate. They looked after us, made us feel safe, and ensured we had a great time.
Full on does not do this trip justice!!! Lodges were lovely, tent camping was brought to another level with excellent food, sublime settings in the trees, and two excellent workers who set up camp each time. Roads were as described, bumpy. Itinerary was busy, driving long distances. Nobody complained however. And animals galore. Our guide did fantastic job at tracking them. Out of this world experience!
Had an amazing trip . Kk was brilliant - knew all the tracks and trails around all 3 national parks . We saw so much . The guys who ran the 5 nights of bush camping did an amazing job of putting the tents up and down and produced the most amazing food in the camp fire . A very good trip . Staying at Batonka lodge at the beginning and the end was also really good . Nice to have a lovely hotel to end the trip in .
We saw a huge variety of animals many times and a close proximity. Bibi was great! He was excellent at making sure the varied needs of the group were met, as well as his main role of guiding the group through the game parks and telling us about the different habits of the wildlife.
Amazing Safari holiday, would definitely go again with Explore. Botswana definitely the place to go.
This was a simply incredible holiday. Not only was our guide Titus excellent - with such a plethora of knowledge about the flora and fauna of Botswana. He was incredibly helpful, cheerful and always found us the best viewings - be it a leopard and its two cubs in a tree, or a pride of 15+ lions with a fresh kill. Explore planned a brilliant, action packed trip and have the best definition of "simple" camping I've ever heard. Comfortable beds with mattresses and warm showers in the middle of the bush are simply a dream. Not only this but thanks to BA our luggage didn't get to us for the first 5 days of our trip - but explore were excellent, they dealt with multiple useless airlines and got our luggage to us, having already crossed a border and travelled hundreds of miles into Botswana. To put it simply, this was the trip of a lifetime and Titus, the staff, and explore couldn't have done a better job of it.
Bibi was a fabulous leader. He went over an above to make sure we had the best experience and we were so fortunate to see the variety of animals we saw. It was my first ever safari and I loved it.
Words can't do justice to this incredible experience in beautiful Botswana and Zambezi. Much credit must go to our wonderful guide, Titus, who went above and beyond as both guide and driver. His knowledge and love of Botswana, its people and the amazing wildlife was clear. Nothing was too much trouble for him or any of the staff assisting. A special mention to Dipsi and the crew at Savuti, and William, Douglas and co on our 5 day wild camping experience. We were kept well fed, safe and snug despite camp beds and bucket showers.
Fantastic experience . Our guide KK was excellent and we saw an amazing amount of wildlife. Accommodation was varied and although the simple camping was challenging it was definitely worth doing. Listening to the hippos while lying in bed is something I won’t forget. As stated in the itinerary, there are some long bumpy days in the vehicle as the roads are largely sand/dirt tracks but this didn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of this wonderful country.
Wildlife amazing! Camping was tough, not helped by poor camping equipment. A lot of time (average 8hours per day) spent in the vehicle on very bumpy roads.
Fantastic experience! Saw huge array of animals and birds up close and personal! Felt extremely safe expertly guide by K K - huge knowledge and always felt in very safe hands. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough!
The itinerary was good with the exception of the return journey to Victoria Falls which entailed crossing 3 borders which was very time consuming. Also,we had to purchase a visa just to cover a 4 hour journey through Namibia. It would be better to put that expense towards an overnight stay to journey back through Botswana, or re work the itinerary. The guide and camp staff worked very hard. The guide was very good at spotting animals and endeavoured to find good viewing spots. However, more general information along the way would have been helpful. Also, at the beginning of the trip we asked about activities for when we returned to Victoria falls and were to we could book later in the tour when we were at the houseboat. We chose a evening dinner cruise. However when we returned to Victoria Falls nothing had been booked and on the last day reception rang round but the was no availability. This was very disappointing. Explore office The communications from the office were poor. I asked for additional information regarding the wild camping. I was told I would receive a response in 24 hours. After 3 days I rang again and finally received an email. However, this did not contain the information requested. Instead there was a link to the website of a luxury lodge. I queried this and got no response.
Just had the best time on safari with Bibi our tour guide. He went the extra mile to enable us all to see the big 5. We had a fabulous group of like minded fellow travellers who all got on incredibly well. Accommodation was of a high standard even the tents with drop loos. William made some cracking meals on the open fire & Baker was always there to solve a problem. I do feel that Explore need to update their health information, we didn’t need to show Yellow Fever certificate at all. It must be said that anyone with a back problem probably will not enjoy or benefit from the hours of being shaken violently from the rough tracks. Love the tour.
An amazing safari with a fabulous tour leader, Bi Bi.
This was an amazing trip. Our guide was so informative and managed to show us the animals in action. Wild camping was a challenge but exciting. The camp chef created great food on an open fire. If you decide to go on this trip in June/ July it does get cold so go prepared. Do the swag bag up. Take a nail brush and poo bags to put your toilet paper in after using the bush toilet. Fully recommend this tour.
The whole trip was just amazing. The itinerary was just perfect and our leader was incredible.
Where to start! What an AMAZING holiday. Our guide and driver was KK. He was so calm, knowledgeable, funny and VERY patient with our group of 11 . He had such respect for the animals and the countryside. KK seemed to have a sixth sense as to where to find the best places to view beautiful animals like the leopard, wild dogs, elephants, lions, buffalo and many other animals. The wild camping was fantastic (basic but brilliant). The support staff at each site were so caring and spoilt us with amazing meals. The easiest way to describe this trip - Each day another life affirming experience came our way. NOTE: The schedule IS full on with early starts every morning. The BEST holiday I have ever had 😁
An amazing trip, well worth every penny. We saw so much wildlife and I couldn't believe how close we were to some of the animals! I loved the sunrises on our morning game drives and the wild camping really enhanced the experience. Our guide and his team looked after us so well. The only thing that caught us out was how cold the mornings can be so a woolly hat, gloves and a warm jacket are essential. An incredible experience with wonderful memories!
Our safari with Explore exceeded our expectations. The itinerary covered a number of parks with the opportunity to see a great deal of widlife. The accommodation was varied from luxurious to basic which added to the 'adventure' The camp and boat crews were friendly and competent and provided excellent meals on basic equipment. Our leader Titus must take alot of the credit for the sucess of the trip. His excellet driving and coordinating skills were evident throughout. He showed great respect for those with whom he worked and the same was shown to him making the atmosphere very relaxed. His tracking skills were exceptional giving us some very special memories, particularly 5 chettahs drinking together.
Trip was great overall. A good selection of camping with 4* hotels. Landcruiser was old but reliable. sundowner drinks were missing! Titus was fantastic, but you expect so much from him. On previous explore trips we have had a driver, explore leader and local guides. Titus had to drive, spot the ruts in the tracks, track the animals, all whilst navigating and talking to us. Too much for one person I think.
Excellent and knowledgeable guide [kk]. Great itinerary and mix of accommodation. Enjoyed the 'wildlife' bush camp experience. The 3 guys that moved camp and looked after us worked really hard and Williams cooking in camp was exceptional. Would definitely recommend.
KK was a fantastic guide. Friendly personality, knowledgable about wildlife and fauna, clever at seeking out wildlife and a great driver. The wild camping was pretty much as we expected except in one aspect : we had not anticipated having such excellent food preopared by our cook William. Bezst food of the holiday and amazing what he managed to cook and bake in his camp kitchen
Amazing knowledgeable guide (KK) and ability to see animals and birds on safari. Camps were well set up and as described with beds or camp beds. Camp food was excellent (particularly William’s camp baking and traditional Botswana beef meal). Lodge accommodations were clean with a welcome mid-way lodge at Thamos Telele to shower and clean up after 5 nights of camping. Prepare for some long drive days for transport between parks and back to Vic Falls, with sections of rough road. Lunch and Dinner should be included at Thamos Telele (no other option) and could be included at Batonka. Charging for phones and cameras is limited on safari portions - due in part to charging ports within the vehicle not functioning - charging blocks/spare batteries are helpful to bring.
This trip is the ideal way to explore Botswana with a great mix of accommodation and an excellent itinerary. It allows you to get up close to many iconic African animals. Highly recommended.
Botswana Wildlife Safari was a fantastic tour, lived up-to and beyond expectations. "Chief" our tour leader was excellent, having excellent knowledge of wildlife, knew the area inside out and was a safe and very competent driver across all the terrains We had a small group of five which made the experience more personal, easier to manage and meant we all got to sit in the safari vehicle with great views. What also made the tour more enjoyable was the group of people we had where first class and hopefully remain in contact and will last in our memories for a long time
Great trip, lots of variety in accommodation from lodges, luxury tents to serviced camping. Our guide was amazing and managed to track and find lots of animals although luck has a lot to do with it! Visiting a range of reserves in Botswana, we had the opportunity to see lots of different landscapes/vegetation and species. Recommend layers for wearing on 4WD as it is cold in the morning and trip does include some long drives in open sided vehicle. Note, there's opportunity to buy drinks for the 5 nights camping and cooler in 4WD. Water and hot drinks provided. The food during the camping and stay on houseboat was lovely. Houseboat rooms are small and hot as windows/doors don't have flyscreens. Long drive through Namibia which includes 3 border crossings, we were lucky on our trip and all went relatively smoothly, would've been nice to have a nights stay in Namibia to visit one of its parks and not have so much travel and stress for guide.
An excellent tour with an excellent guide (Joe) from the local partner. A varied itinerary with a good mix of wild camping (comfortable but basic) and very comfortable lodge accommodations. Lots and lots of wildlife (big game and birds), some amazing sunsets and unbelievable night sky. Things you may wish to know: The Explore itinerary might be subject to minor changes once in country. It's Africa, things happen. Roll with it - your local guide will always do what's best for you. There is a lot of driving and long days on bumpy roads. Transfer days are long, but so are game drive days.
Trip is excellent but would be too demanding for some people who might be better with the non-csmping version of this trip.
