If you want to immerse youself in Africa this camping trip is an excellent way to discover this amazing continent. There's plenty of opportunities to discover its wildlife, scenery and culture. It's quite full on and does involve some long drives but these are small sacrifices compared with the benefits that such a tour offers.
Our Cape Safari and Falls trip with Contiki was an unforgettable 12 days, and a big part of that came down to our tour guide. They were incredibly knowledgeable, sharing insights that really helped us understand each place we visited, while also making sure we felt safe and confident during every activity. Starting in Cape Town was the perfect introduction. The slower pace at the beginning gave us time to settle in and properly learn about South Africa, rather than feeling rushed. It set the tone nicely for the rest of the trip. Heading to Kruger National Park was a real highlight. Seeing such a wide range of animals in their natural environment was incredible, especially witnessing interactions between them. It felt like something out of a documentary, but happening right in front of us. Moving on to Victoria Falls was equally memorable. The falls themselves were stunning, and the optional bridge activities added a real sense of adventure. What worked well was the flexibility, if you didn’t want to take part, there was still plenty to do, from watching others to browsing local street vendors. Finally, traveling into Botswana was a standout moment of the trip. Camping in the park with no fences was both surreal and exciting. Being so close to wildlife, while still feeling safe, made it a unique and memorable experience, and definitely a personal highlight. Overall, it was a well-balanced trip with a great mix of learning, adventure, and downtime. It’s one I’d highly recommend to anyone looking to experience this part of the world in a meaningful and exciting way.
Pioneers is a great hotel, shame that it's a little way out of town and you need to use a taxi to get anywhere (10 USD each way) Our guide, Matt was excellent. He met us at the airport, dropped us back there on departure and guides us on our visit to the falls. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and provided us with just the right balance of information about the falls and Zimbabwe. We recommend dinner at Dusty Road, lunch at the Look Out cafe (opportunity to watch the zip lines over the gorge) and a Sunset Dinner Cruise. These were all suggested and reserved for us by the hotel. Practical: 55 USD per person for visa payable in cash at airport passport control before you can access an ATM. Our experience was that everything is paid for in US dollars although euros and rand are apparently acceptable, credit cards carry a 3% surcharge. Food and drink prices are much the same as UK
This trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience! We enjoyed every moment. The scenery was absolutely breath-taking, the people were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, and the animals were simply beautiful. Seeing them up close in their natural habitat was an awe‑inspiring moment I’ll never forget. For anyone even thinking about taking this trip and feeling unsure—do it. You won’t regret it!
My overall experience was delightful. I had never been to Africa before and each day held new and exciting adventures. I still can't believe all that I saw and experienced. This was a trip full of awe and excitement like nothing I have ever experienced before.
My experience was amazing and took me out of my comfort zone with the onsite camping in the Okavango Delta. However, the people and the experiences we met along the way surpassed any negatives. One other thing I forgot to mention about our CEO was that it would have been more engaging if he had identified various markers along the way. For example, our taxi drive to WDH airport pointed out landmarks and items of interest on our way to the airport that our guide could maybe have identified to enrich our knowledge.
