Kyoto is one of the best places in Japan to experience the country’s dynamic traditions, cuture and religion. The modern city of Kyoto remains awash with over 2,000 incense-soaked shrines, vivid green gardens, and traditional teahouses serving matcha in exquisitely refined surrounds. A haven for food lovers and aficionados of craft beers, a visit to Kyoto is a must when you're traveling to Japan.

The tour was fabulous and our tour leader, Zilola, was fantastic. The pace is full on and definitely delivers the highlights of Japan. Zilola added optional activities to get the most out of our short stays at each destination. In addition, she was always available to address any questions or concerns the group may have had. As we were visiting sites, she provided extensive background information which enhanced the experience. As others commented, be prepared for lots of walking! This is my third trip with Explore my favorite to date. I added on days in Kyoto and Tokyo and recommend this there is limited time at in both places. Highly recommend!

Wonderful tour of Japan

This was our first visit to Japan. The small group tour, led by an excellent guide as all that we hoped for. Cultural experiences, history, exploring cities, and some countryside, and architecture. This is a wonderful tour, especially for people visiting this amazing country for the first time

A dream trip has come true!

I had wanted to go on this trip for years, and my dream finally came true! It was a fantastic trip that combined all the highlights of both modern and ancient sights within two weeks. I really appreciated the balance between group activities and free time to explore at our own pace. Our tour leader Kan was excellent, and everyone on the tour was lovely. I feel incredibly grateful to have explored Japan with such a wonderful group of people. We shared plenty of laughs along the way and I made some friends on this trip :-)

Excellent

Overall, this tour was a great experience. The tour covered an excellent range of historical and cultural sites and activities, and provided a good introduction to Japanese culture and history. The CEO was amazingly organized, efficient, knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and helpful.

Excellent

It was a great tour and perfect for some with no knowledge of Japan. Honestly one of the most incredible tours of my life and now I am craving to return and go on more G Adventures.

Excellent

I think it was a lot of fun exploring different cities with a bunch of other travelers who were open to new ideas/experiences. Amie did a great job guiding us through this fast paced tour of Japan.

Kyoto - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Kyoto Tour Highlights

  • Take in the glittering Kinkaku-ji – the Golden Pavilion – a Zen pagoda decorated in gold leaf and with a sublime lakeside setting.
  • Stroll through the atmospheric seventeenth-century streets of Gion, home to Geisha girls and traditional teahouses.
  • Experience Shintoism at its most impressive at Fushimi Inari-Taisha shrine, where vermillion shrine gates contrast with the natural mountainside location.
  • Head to the top of the 131 metre Kyoto Tower for unparalleled panoramic views across the city.
  • Explore Japan’s Buddhist heritage at the temple of Kiyomizu-dera, dating back to 1633.
  • Stroll through the historic district of Gion that will leave you spellbound, and desperate to extend your Kyoto tour for as long as possible.

Kyoto Travel Tips

  • Japanese efficiency means Kyoto has a phenomenal public transport system. The great value Kyoto City bus pass offers unlimited travel and can be purchased from bus and train stations, as well as on buses themselves.
  • The popularity of the Kinkaku-ji Golden Pavilion means it can get very crowded. Aim to get there as early as possible, and outside of weekends and Japanese holidays.
  • Base yourself in Gion, not only the downtown historic district but also the site of most of the city’s entertainment, and you’ll be right at the heart of the action.
  • If you’re on a tight budget, consider having your main meals at lunchtime, when many restaurants offer cheaper set-price daily menus.
  • Bring an umbrella! Not only are they useful for any passing rain shower, but as the locals will soon demonstrate, they are also perfect for keeping the sun off!
