day 1 - Makassar Airport - Tana Toraja

Welcome to Sulawesi! Your driver will meet you at Makassar Airport on arrival and drive you through the long road north in a private vehicle. Drive past colourful houses on stilts to reach Tana Toraja.

En-route, we will stop at Pare-Pare, a seaside town, for lunch at a local restaurant. Notice the landscape change as you travel further. Once you get closer to Rantepao, you will start seeing the first tongkonans, traditional houses with buffalo horn roofs. Check into your hotel on arrival in Tana Toraja.

day 2 - Tana Toraja: Lemo, Suaya, Kambira, Londa & Ke'te-Kesu

Time to discover the magical culture of the Torajans. Each of the sites you will visit today have their own importance. You can admire wooden effigies of the dead that are known as tau-tau in Lemo. These effigies are perched on a balcony on the cliff.

In Suaya, you will see the burial grounds of the royal family of King Sangalla, while in Kambira, you will discover the tree cemetery where babies and infants are placed into the trunk of tarra trees. Londa is known for its impressive cave tombs and hanging tombs, while Ke'te-Kesu, the last destination on the itinerary today, is a traditional village with tongkonan architecture.

Your tour guide will tell you all about the mystical customs and rituals concerning the dead in this part of the world. Stay overnight at your hotel in Tana Toraja.

day 3 - Tana Toraja: Batutumonga, Palawa, Bori & Marante

We will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Batutumonga, a beautiful viewpoint from where you can enjoy a stunning landscape. Set off on a walk through the countryside, amongst rice fields and traditional tongkonans.

Keep an eye out for the sacred water buffalo! Next, continue on the road to Pallawa and Bori where you can admire impressive megalithic structures. Enjoy your lunch in Rantepao before continuing to Marante, a traditional Torajan village with a number of tongkonanas, big paddy barns and rocky hills with hanging stone graves.

Return back to your hotel after the tour is over.

day 4 - Tana Toraja – Makassar Airport

Leave Tana Toraja early in the morning and take the road south. Stop at a viewpoint on the way to admire impressive mountains and stunning scenery. Say goodbye to the last of the tongkonans as you leave the Toraja Land and head for Makassar.

Enjoy your traditional seafood lunch at Pare-Pare before continuing to Makassar Airport.
