This is a 4-day trekking trip to Mount Meru in Tanzania. Mount Meru is the third highest peak in Africa and is the second highest mountain in Tanzania at 4,568m. The mountain is located within Arusha National Park, Tanzania’s gem.
The ascend is quite steep, the route to the summit passes over streams, through parkland, mountain forest, a giant weather zone and moorland. The summit is reached by a narrow, barren ridge, which provides stunning views. The technical requirements for climbing Mount Meru are greater than on the Kilimanjaro Routes.

A drive-fly wildlife safari through Tanzania's magnificent National Parks. An all encompassing safari through Tanzania's magnificent National Parks. We begin in spectacular Tarangire National Park known for its elephant populations and prolific birdlife where wildlife viewing is at its best from June to October (bird watching is excellent from November to May). We then make our way to Ngorongoro Crater, where encounters with a variety of animals are guaranteed due to the large concentration of species supported by the permanent water source and naturally enclosed in the volcanic crater with its steep, densely vegetated sides. We travel by road to a Masai village and then to the world famous paleolithic site of Olduvai Gorge and Serengeti. Multiple game drives allow opportunities to search for and observe a huge array of plains animals, associated predators, estuarine life, birds and the distinctive scenery of the famous Serengeti. Flying from the Serengeti National Park back to Arusha means we can save a day of transit by road and maximise the time available for game viewing. Join us on this nine-day, guided trip to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. This tour is for those wanting to conquer Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route, one of the most favoured route to summit Kilimanjaro because of its high summit rate and great scenery.
This route is less crowded than other routes, making it perfect from first-time trekkers. Also, since it takes more to reach the top through this route, it provides better acclimatization to the climbers, increasing the chances of a successful summit.
Your trek starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro from Londorossi Gate. Continue your journey through the rainforest to reach the Shira Plateau. At this point, the trail moves east to the Lava Tower from where it heads down to the Barranco Valley.
You also get the chance to spend a night in Crater Camp, just below the summit, during descent, which arguably is the most interesting part of this journey. Machame Route (also known to as the "Whiskey Route") is the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro with high summit success rate. It rewards hikers with scenic splendors. From late afternoon sunsets at Shira to the misty revelations of Kibo at the great Barranco Wall, witness a scenic "slide show" as you trek to the top of the world's highest free-standing mountain.
There is an added benefit to taking the Machame Route, as you are afforded the most valuable commodity on the mountain: acclimatization. The route takes you high to Lava Tower (4,630m) on Day 3 and brings you down by nearly 700m for an overnight at Barranco camp (3,950m). This is the secret to successful acclimatization.
(Note: All your equipment and supplies are portered and a cook prepares all your meals. While the accommodation on the Marangu route is in huts, the Machame route offers strictly tents only accommodation.)

This full-day excursion includes something for everyone. From relaxing on the white sands of the Pange Sandbank to snorkeling for tropical fish and devouring a BBQ seafood buffet - guests are in for a treat!
In the morning, we board the dhow and set sail towards Prison Island. There, guests will enjoy a guided tour of a prison built for “rebellious slaves”, visit with giant Aldabra tortoises and snorkel with a guide to view the stunning array of coral and tropical fish that surround the island.
We then sail to the magnificent Pange Sandbank, a beautiful patch of white sand surrounded by turquoise waters. Guests can relax under the shade of our ample tents or swim in the warm water of the Indian Ocean. All that activity sure builds an appetite! For lunch, guests will savor a delicious seafood BBQ served with a cool, crisp beer and other refreshing beverages. After lunch, snorkel among Clown fish and Moorish Idols or simply take a walk around the sandbank to witness the birdlife. By the time we set sail to town in the late afternoon, guests will have enjoyed one of their favorite days in Zanzibar!
Itinerary:
09:30 - We meet at the original Dhow Safaris departure point before boarding our dhow.
09:45 - We meet the crew and will be observing a safety briefing before setting sail toward the Prison Island.
10:30 - We arrive at the island. Then we tour the historic prison and visit the giant tortoises while snorkelling around.
12:00 - We hop on board the dhow to sail toward Pange Sandbank.
13:00 - BBQ Seafood Lunch will be prepared for 8 persons or more. For 7 or less persons, we pack a delicious picnic basket! Meals are served at tables under a beautiful tent made of Merikani sails. After lunch, we shall snorkel in and out of the colorful Pange Reef and swim around the island.
16:00 - We set sail for Stone Town

Despite being one of the newest routes to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho Route has quickly become one of the most popular routes for travelers visiting this African wonder. The lower number of trekkers, stunning scenery and higher success rate to reaching the very top makes it a traveler favorite, and most trekkers taking this route fall in love with it. What makes it even more unique is that unlike the more popular Machame Route, this route crosses the majestic Shira Plateau via a flat and easy hike .
The Lemosho route can be done in as little as six days (five nights) on the mountain. However, it is ideally tackled over eight days (seven nights) for a better altitude acclimatization schedule. The trek begins at Londorossi Gate, located in the western base of mountain, within its lush, fertile rainforest. The route heads across the Shira Plateau, before circling along the southern circuit halfway around the mountain, exposing the climber to great views from all angles. The approach to the summit is made from the east, and the descent follows the Mweka trail. With eight days (seven nights) on the mountain, your chances of reaching the “Roof of Africa” are very high, around 90%.
The Lemosho route is approximately 70 km/ 42 miles from gate to gate. It is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience. There are several variations to the 8-day Lemosho climb regarding starting and finishing points, altitude, distance and hiking time. However, ours is considered to be the ideal Lemosho route variation.
