Begin at Marangu village, hiking through lush rainforest, heath, and moorland into the stark grandeur of the alpine desert, before reaching the arctic zone at Kilimanjaro’s peak. Though the route can be completed in five days, an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Huts is highly recommended for those less familiar with high-altitude trekking.

day 1Marangu Gate, Hike to Mandara Hut

After breakfast and briefing, drive to the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (about 1 hour), register and commence the climb. Walk through the rainforest to the Mandara encampment. A side trip to Maundi Crater is a good way to see the surroundings including Northern Tanzania and Kenya. In the rainforest, look for towering Eucalyptus trees, bird life, and Colobus monkeys.

The booking porocess was easy, and customer service was responsive. I contacted 4 companies about the tour I was interested in. Two of the companies I contacted didn't answer me at all. One of them was basically a chatbot that said "do it yourself." Only bookmundi had human agents to help.
