From the 11th-century Norman conquest of England to the World War II D-Day landings, Normandy holds a special place in European history. It’s true that this northwestern region in France mostly draws history lovers, but there is much more to explore here beyond the usual suspects: D-Day landing beaches, Mémorial de Caen, Bayeux Tapestry, etc. Visitors can, for instance, enjoy a seaside holiday in Deauville, explore the historical buildings in Caen, and sample the world-famous Camembert cheese. Keep reading to find out our highlights of Normandy on your France tour.

Our leader was Pablo Garcia. He was very knowledgeable, skilled and had lots of patience, excellent and timely information and always made sure our needs were met. Some of the accommodation was basic, but that was okay. Breakfasts were very varied and tasty with plenty of choices. We had a great group of cyclists and Pablo kept the team spirit going. The recommendations for meals were great and we had a lot of local food/ specialty options, which was great. The itinerary was good, riding through beautiful and vast landscapes with wild life such as flamingos and white horses, small medieval villages and beautiful canals, we would have expected and liked some more roads along the beautiful coast. There was a lot of riding through flat landscape with orchards and agriculture. The equipment was good, but some of the bikes had some gear and shifting issues. The support van driver Louis, made awesome picnic lunches with fresh local foods. All in all a great trip!

I recommend this trip. The itinerary was well thought out and planned and included a number of places I wanted to visit. Weronica our guide was excellent, very supportive and knowledgeable. The hotels were also of a very high standard and the picnics, provided by Lluis, our support driver, were amazing!

We had a good time despite some rain for which I don't blame them! The hotels were all very different but nice and that was interesting. There was a good variety in the walks and things to see.

A great trip with an excellent tour guide, Weronika who is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Our man in the van, Lluis, also enhanced the experience with a series of picnics through the week. The tour struck a good balance between cycling and sight seeing. The accommodation was good quality and the travel logistics worked well.

Weronica was great. Very informative, full of positive energy, and kept us from getting lost. Lluis was an amazing support person. His picnics were fabulous, and he was a great cheerleader for each of us.

Tour Highlights

  • Make it a point to visit Mont-Saint-Michel during your trip to Normandy. This tidal island is famed for its castle-like abbey that appears as though it has risen out of the sea.
  • Head to Caen for a whole host of things to do and explore. Caen Castle and the men’s and women’s abbey all have links to William the Conqueror, and when night falls, the streets in the Vanguex neighborhood come alive with various bars and restaurants.
  • See the infamous Bayeux Tapestry that depicts the campaign led by William the Conqueror to conquer England in 1066.
  • Enjoy the perfect seaside holiday in Deauville, which is also popular among visitors for its golf courses, marina, horse racing culture, and casinos.
  • Visit the capital of the Normandy region, Rouen. This port city is steeped in history, with the oldest inn in France, La Couronne, the stunning Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Gros Horloge Clock Tower.
  • Explore the D-Day beaches on a World War II tour of Normandy. The five beaches, with their code names of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword can evoke powerful feelings as you walk where many men bravely fought for Europe’s freedom.
  • Savor some of the best cheeses in France, all found in the Normandy region. The star of the show is Camembert, but other varieties like Neufchatel, Livarot, and Pont-l’Eveque aren't to be missed.

Travel Tips

  • Be respectful when visiting war memorials in Normandy.
  • Devote at least half a day to the Mémorial de Caen, which commemorates Normandy Landings and the Battle of Caen.
  • Make your vacation go further by booking tours from Paris to Normandy. As most key attractions and towns are just a two-hour drive from the capital, you get to experience the best of both worlds.
  • Add Amiens and Lille to your itinerary if you are on a World War II tour of Normandy.
  • Plan ahead if you are going on Normandy beach tours in the summer, which is the peak time for tourism. Or aim for the shoulder months of May and September.
  • Consider visiting lesser-known gems like Trouville-Sur-Mer and Valleuse d’Antifer on your Normandy trip.
