The rolling hills, tiny scattered villages and terraced vineyards of Portugal’s famous Alto Douro wine region attracts wine connoisseurs and nature lovers alike. The Unesco World Heritage Site garners worldwide status not just for its unique beauty but also for being the birthplace of port wine, first manufactured by local winemakers circa late 17th century. Marvel at the beguiling terrains on a sleepy boat ride along the Douro River (where locals play in summer), visit riverside restaurants for farm-to-table feasts, or if you’re a mountain goat, nothing beats hiking the area. The best way to explore the region is with our Douro Valley tours, involving loads of wine-tasting, sightseeing and time spent at one of the 200-odd Quintas. Browse through our collection of Douro Valley tours to book yourself an experience.

The transfers to and from the Lisbon hotel were efficient and on time. As well, the extra leg room in the well-apppointed coach was welcomed! Great food, wine, lodgings, and experiences. Daniel Ferguson was an experienced guide who not only took us to beautiful sites, but also added a couple of extra side trips and treats. He and our driver Felipe worked extremely well together, and the local guides were all knowledgable and passionate about their subjects.

For the curious traveller who wants to explore a bit more of Portugal, this itinerary was perfect. The beaches of the south, the plains of the centre, the hills and rivers of the north are all included. The result is an enjoyable time exploring a cultural and historic treasure.

First of all, the guide Daniel and the driver, Felipe were OUTSTANDING!! they made the journey most enjoyable. Dan was very knowledgeable, kept us informed of the day to day schedule and was always available to assist with any issues that would arise during our trip. I know my fellow travelers felt the same. And we were all amazed how Felipe navigated some of the narrow, twisty roads without even a scratch to the coach.

What an absolutely wonderful tour. The tour guide went above and beyond for all tour members, one who needed medical assistance specifically. Each hotel was amazing and top shelf. The optional tours were beautiful and shared so much about each area and the people who live there. The pace was great as well were able to see so many areas of Portugal. I will definitely recommend to others. Portugal is green in beauty and taking care of natural resources. Loved our time there!

Fantastic way to experience Portugal and see the diverse terrain. From cosmopolitan to country, hilly cobblestoned streets to winding mountainous pavement, hustle and bustle of larger cities to the quaint quiet villages and vineyards, all offering fantastic scenery, food, friendly people and of course wine! Additionally, the coach was extremely comfortable with plenty of legroom (40 of us on board). Absolutely loved every minute. And if that wasn't enough, we were blessed with the world's greatest tour guide and coach driver - and !

A wonderful way to see the whole of Portugal. We were able to see and explore parts of Portugal that U certainly would never want to drive in. Driving though the countryside you see the olive trees, orange trees and grape vines. Stunning views as you drive through the Duoro Valley. .

Douro Valley — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Douro Valley Tour Highlights

  • Sample different Porto varietals (from sweet Vintage Port to deep-amber-colored aged Tawny Port NV to drier White Port NV) while Quintas-hopping the traditional wineries/vineyards and organic, family-run estates in the region.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant above Douro River and watch the cruise liners roll in. Walk down the banks and spend some time at scenic spots such as Passadouro River Beach.
  • Feel like an F1 driver along the twisty, scenic N222 during Douro Valley tours—one of the most beautiful roads in Portugal. Pull over at historical sights, such as the 18th-century Casa de Mateus. Starting in Vila Nova de Gaia, the road ends in Almendra near the Spanish border.
  • Witness almond trees blossoming in February. In May, enjoy the flowering season of red poppies and Japanese sakura.
  • Travel to the Stone Age at Parque Arqueológico do Vale do Côa. The Cao River Valley rock art etchings date back 30,000 years.
  • Witness the breathtaking views of the region from Mesão Frio, St. Anthony’s Viewpoint, São Leonardo de Galafura, Casal de Loivos and São Salvador do Mundo.
  • Hike one of the many trails (ranging from easy to moderate) to waterfalls and over cragged cliffs within the 86,834-hectare Douro International Natural Park. Douro Valley bike tours are popular with experienced cyclists. Or go bird-watching among the acorn oak and prickly juniper trees, keeping eyes peeled for Egyptian vultures, blue rock thrush and red kites.
  • Explore local history and culture at the museums and ancient sites. Learn about wine-making at the Douro Museum in Régua, spot the unique stone houses in Ucanha village, and visit Mosteiro de São João de Tarouca, a monastery built in the 12th century.

Douro Valley Travel Tips

  • Plan your trip to Douro Valley during the spring season, which runs from March to May, when the weather conditions are perfect for outdoor activities like hiking and rabelo boat rides on the river.
  • For grape harvest festivities, take a trip to Douro Valley in September.
  • The Douro Valley spans multiple villages and cities, so setting aside two to three days is advised if you want to do more than just scratch the surface. If you are short on time, Douro Valley can be covered on an 8-hour day tour from Porto too.
  • Planning on staying overnight? The only place you want to check into is an authentic Quinta!
  • When purchasing port from the shops or wineries, look out for the bottle’s official DOC status. The DOC label on wine means the manufacturer followed the precise rules designed to preserve the traditional winemaking practices of the region.
