A walk back through history to King Offa’s Mercia on the border of England and Wales. Once upon a time in the 8th century, there was a ruthless King of Mercia called Offa. Such trouble had he from Welsh marauders nibbling at the toes of his kingdom, that once and for all he decided to define his territory and built a huge earthwork to do so, generally following the high ground with commanding views into the mountains and down into the valleys. Today the remaining 80 miles of embankment forms Britain’s longest archaeological monument and the basis of a famous walk: Crossing the border between England and Wales more than 10 times, the Offa’s Dyke National Trail path follows some of the finest scenery in both countries for 177 miles (285 km). Our walk follows the southern half of this trail from Chepstow to Knighton, (about half this walking distance in total). It is a journey packed with interest through patchworks of fields, over windswept ridges, across infant rivers, by ruined castles and into the old border market towns. Traditional farming methods have more or less remained intact and the hedgerows, oak woods and hay meadows form good wildlife habitats, home of buzzards and the rare Red Kite. You might even discover the even rarer Welsh Red Dragon!

The program was not too strenuous. The leader was very knowledgeable. The driver was careful and accommodating. I really enjoyed the castles and churches with historic stories that enlightened us about Wales’ background. The accommodations were comfortable and the staff very pleasant. The meals were delicious with several choices. The coach was comfortable and stops were every few hours for snacks or bathroom breaks. The weather was perfect . So this was a good time of the year to visit Wales. Try to make sure there is a Concert with Male choir singing. It was wonderful. The whole experience was A 1.

This was an interesting way to see the scenery and history of Wales. The tour was fine but I must say that the accommodation supplied was wonderful, and way beyond expectations. As were th3 supplied meals.

We visited an historic Coalmine, (Pit) which I did not really want to descend into. I was glad to get our of the mine, however it was the relization that life was extremely hard and Human Beings, had very little value, back in that pre 20th Century period. So I did appreciate, that experience. We also stayed in 2 Country Estates, dating back to the 17th Century, which are now Hotels. Overall the bus trip was very informative. I do recommend this tour.

There was so many different experiences and a great, knowledgeable tour leader. Wales has so much to offer and such a rich history. We certainly saw much of this part of Britain - mountains, coastal towns, castles and moors. The hotels were excellent and chosen for their character and service. Travelling along the back roads , through green forest and valleys was so much better than motorways. I enjoyed the company of my fellow travellers in this small group tour.

My first time using Blue Roads. The Wonders Of Wales was excellent.. Love the small group, you get to know everyone, made friends with all. We had a great bunch!! Our tour guide Terry was excellent. Very knowledgeable and made the bus rides very fun. Our bus driver Ken was a superb driver. Got us in some tight places. Just have to say that how well organized the tour was.
