day 1Join trip Ho Chi Minh, afternoon orientation tour

Still commonly referred to by locals as 'Saigon', Ho Chi Minh is the largest city in Vietnam and the country's commercial hub. Here, you can find an eclectic mix of the traditional and the new, where pagodas and markets compete alongside the trappings of Vietnam's newly discovered entrepreneurial spirit.

For those arriving on time today, our tour leader plans to meet you in the hotel reception at 4pm for the welcome meeting and to take us on the walking tour. The tour will take in some of the central sights of the city, including the Opera House (formerly South Vietnam National Assembly), Hotel de Ville, Notre Dame Cathedral and the impressive French-style edifice that is the GPO building.

If you'd like an airport transfer today, you'll need to arrive into Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN), which is around a 45-minute drive from our hotel. As part of our Upgraded range, we also offer a complimentary transfer to those who have made pre-tour accommodation arrangements through Explore, regardless of your arrival day.

Please note that if you wish to join the afternoon orientation walk today, you must arrive at the hotel by 3.30pm. If you're booking your own flights, we recommend giving yourself at least 30 minutes to clear the airport. From the airport to the hotel is around a 30-minute drive, so the latest your flight can arrive is 2pm. Should you miss the welcome meeting, our tour leader will leave a note at the front desk to inform you of any essential information.

We'll spend the next two nights in our premium hotel in the heart of the vibrant city centre, which offers elegant accommodation, exceptional dining experiences and sophisticated amenities.

This was our first organised tour holiday and it exceeded our expectations in every possible way. The information provided by Explore before the holiday was highly accurate, the itinerary was as described and the “premium” hotels were well worth the little extra cost. Explore also organised our flights and the whole experience was seamless. Our tour guide/leader was exceptionally knowledgeable, providing an interesting and educational dimension, from local insights through to the history and language of the country. Perfection.

We had a really great time on this trip and our guide was excellent. Nothing was too much trouble for him and the support staff. The hotels were also lovely. It’s quite a full on trip with early starts on most days to avoid the heat and activities also available for the non cycling days if you want to join in. The overnight train was not such a great experience for me and it seemed a rush after that to go on the boat trip but all other aspects of the trip seemed very well planned and thought through.

I had an amazing time on the trip. The hotels were really lovely and I made the best decision to upgrade. The trip exceeded my expectations. All the hotels had a pool, some having roof top infinity pools. The breakfast food was very comprehensive. The guide Huan was very knowledgable and sorted everything out for us. It was lovely to cycle in places that appeared to have very little tourism. In contrast the cities of Saigon, Hue and Hanoi were brilliant. The country of Vietnam is a lot more advanced than I thought it would be. An excellent 5 star trip of a life time.

Fantastic experience! The tour itinerary was well thought out; fun, interesting and well timed. Accommodations were first rate. Van travel between cities was comfortable; the expert driver knew time-saving detours to avoid traffic delays. Our five-star tour leader shared his deep knowledge of Vietnam to our group in a delightful way. And when one cyclist incurred a minor skin scrape the leader patched her up like a professional EMT. Within two days of the start everyone in our seven person group felt like old friends. A wonderful time was had by all.

The process from finding the tour we wanted to take to getting set up for the tour was an easy process. The other reviews we saw gave us the security of using their website to book our trip. The only item we missed which would have given a 5* was the trip did not include see the Alps up close or a train trip. Well maybe next time there may be one and we would definitely take that trip.
