Vietnam Budget Trips

57 reviews on bookmundi

Vietnam is one of Asia’s best countries for a budget holiday, with cheap food, hostels, buses, trains and street-level experiences that still feel rich. But costs rise when travelers add Ha Long Bay cruises, domestic flights, guided Ha Giang routes, beach stops and too many cities in too few days. Our Vietnam budget trips currently start from around USD 45 per day, with routes covering Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Hue, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta. Use this guide to compare affordable Vietnam tours that keep costs low while taking the hassle out of route planning, transport and must-see highlights.

Budget Travel Tips for Vietnam

Do not over-route the country

Vietnam is long. Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta look simple on a map until transfers eat the week. For seven days, choose the north, center or south. For ten to fourteen days, north-to-south becomes more realistic. Budget travel works better when the route respects distance.

Budget separately for Ha Long Bay

Ha Long Bay can be good value, but it is not a normal cheap travel day. Cruises vary by boat quality, cabin comfort, route, meals, transfers and included activities. Budget travelers should compare whether Hanoi transfers, kayaking, entrance fees, meals and overnight cabins are included. A low headline cruise price can become less attractive once every useful extra is added.

Use Hanoi and Hoi An as value anchors

Hanoi has food, hostels, Old Quarter access and low-cost sightseeing. Hoi An is also one of Vietnam’s strongest value stops, with affordable food, walkable streets, markets and nearby beaches. Use these places to keep the trip grounded before adding higher-cost items like cruises, flights or guided adventure routes.

Use trains and buses before flights

Vietnam’s trains and buses are slower but budget-friendly. Flights save time between Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, but baggage, transfers and airport time can make a “cheap” itinerary less cheap. For short trips, flying may be worth it. For longer routes, trains and buses help travelers keep costs down and see more of the country between stops.

Know when a tour helps

DIY is cheaper for slow backpackers, but tours become useful for Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh, Mekong Delta, Cu Chi, Ha Giang or fast north-to-south routes where transport and activity timing matter. A good tour can bundle hotels, transfers, guides, meals and logistics that would otherwise take time to arrange. The value is convenience, not just price.

Keep optional activity money separate

Cooking classes, water puppet shows, Vespa food tours, kayaking, Cu Chi extras, guided motorbike routes and premium cruises can add up quickly. Keep optional activity money separate from the basic daily budget. That makes the trip easier to control. Vietnam is affordable, but optional activities can quietly turn the budget from “street food smart” to “where did that go?”

Excellent

Traveling with a group can be perfect, or difficult depending on the people. I was fortunate to be with a great group, but I would still recommend doing this type of tour to get the feel of a new country with company and guidance regardless of if the whole group gets along. Having phenomenal tour guides in both Thailand and Vietnam may have been luck, but if I were to do another tour and have the same experience I would be very confident that G adventures only hires the best guides available. I don’t have complaints, I had a great time!

This was definitely the right way for me to see Thailand and Vietnam for the first time! Everything was so well taken care of that I felt I could really relax and just enjoy everything that each place had to offer. The tour guides made sure that I could be comfortable even without being able to speak the local language and gave me a lot of insight into the places we visited and the everyday life of the locals. I'm already browsing to see where to go for my next holiday!

This was my first Gadventures tour and I really enjoyed it. Everything was organized for you and the tour guides were always happy to help. Also made many new friends. Perfect for solo travelers. I will book a Gadventures tour in the future!

This trip was rich with cultural and historical experiences that I will not soon forget. Angkor Wat had been on my bucket list for some time and it did not disappoint. The people and children of Cambodia were a highlight as was Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

If you have a good group, even not so good activities can be amazing. Thanks G Adventures that you provide such nice trips where we can find equal fellows to share our adventure with.

I had a wonderful trip that hit all the of the things I wanted to do and see. G adventures took great care of us with only one exception. When I joined the tour the people on the tour had already been traveling together for a few weeks. They were sick and I got a bask chest cold because of it. More precautions should have been encouraged and warnings to myself before having integrated into the group. Encouraging people to wear masks especially the sick people and warning me of what was happening with people getting really sick so I could have taken more personal precautions. PC could have done better in this regard in helping people stay healthy. I missed part of the tour because I was too sick to participate.
