Itinerary
Dream of summiting Africa’s tallest peak? This six-day Mount Kilimanjaro trek via the Lemosho Route is an adventure for determined climbers and nature lovers alike. Starting at Londorossi Gate, you’ll ascend through rainforest to the lofty Shira Plateau, then follow the scenic Southern Circuit past the Lava Tower and down to the Barranco Valley.
Your final ascent brings you to the very top of the continent, before descending to Mweka Hut and returning to Moshi for a well-earned rest. Two nights’ accommodation in Moshi—before and after your trek—ensure you’re rested throughout the journey. The unique selling point: the Lemosho Route’s spectacular diversity and higher summit success rate, making this trip a favorite among those seeking both challenge and stunning scenery on their Kilimanjaro adventure.
day 1 - Moshi – Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp
We will pick you up from your hotel in Moshi and drive you to Londorossi Park Gate in the morning. Get a picnic lunch in a village near the gate (you might also want to buy bottled water) before continuing through a bumpy forest track to Londorossi Park Gate. Complete your formalities at the gate and start your three-hour hike through the rainforest. Your final destination of the day is Mti Mkubwa Camp.
day 2 - Mti Mkubwa Camp – Shira Camp 2
Start your journey out of the forest area and into the heather moorland zone after an early morning breakfast. Cross numerous streams along the way and traverse the Shira Plateau before you reach Shira Camp 2.
The camp is located next to a stream and provides a spectacular view of the mountain's western breach and its glaciers in the east. Your tents will be set up by the porters prior to your arrival. Enjoy evening snacks followed by dinner prepared by your chef. Be prepared for a cold night as temperatures drop below the freezing point at this camp.
day 3 - Shira Camp 2 – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp
A five-hour trek will bring you face to face with the Lava Tower. Enjoy your packed lunch. You also have the option of climbing the massive tower if the weather permits. Time to descend to Barranco Camp, where you will stay tonight. This portion of journey takes two hours.
day 4 - Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp
It is time to conquer the great Barranco Wall. Although it may look intimating at first, hikers often say that scaling Barranco is much easier than they thought. From the top of the wall, the trail winds down to the Karanga Valley.
Reach Barafu Camp, where you will spend the last night before your summit attempt. Familiarize with the campsite before dark. An early dinner will be served tonight and your guide will brief you in detail about summit preparation.
day 5 - Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak – Mweka Camp
Your guide will wake you up at around 11:30 pm and help you prepare for the summit attempt. Start your journey to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. Ascend for several hours at a slow but steady pace while taking frequent but short breaks. The trail travels through a heavy scree as you climb to the crater rim.
In about six hours, you will reach Stella Point (5685 m), located on the crater rim. Continue your journey around the crater rim until you finally reach the summit of Uhuru Peak (5895 m) – the highest point in the continent of Africa.
Take pictures and enjoy the view before descending to Barafu. The hike down to Barafu Camp takes about three hours. Rest and enjoy a hot lunch at the camp before continuing your journey down to Mweka Camp (3100 m).
day 6 - Mweka camp– Mweka Gate – Moshi
Following a well-deserved breakfast, your staff will organize a big celebration full of dancing and singing. It is here on the mountain that you will tip your guide, assistant guides, chef and porters. A three-hour downhill journey will then take you to Mweka Gate, where you receive certificates of completion. Hikers who reached Stella Point receive green certificates while those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates.
Continue your journey downhill for about an hour to reach Mweka village. Enjoy a hot lunch before being driven back to your hotel in Moshi.
