Along the way, soak in views of glacier lakes and wander through paramo ecosystems dotted with rare flora like frailejones, home to rabbits and soaring Andean condors. Descend into the Cocora Valley, where the world’s tallest wax palms pierce the mist, and end your trip in the vibrant town of Salento, famed for its colorful mansions.

day 1 - Pereira - Potosi

Meet your guide at Pereira's airport and drive through Colombia's coffee region, past large plantations and small towns. Arrive in Potosi, a farming area just outside Los Nevados National Park.

Your hosts for the night are Don Humberto and his family who run Campoalegre, an inn located 3930m above sea level. Enjoy hand-made arepas and farm-fresh cheese along with the hospitality of Colombian highlands. Your guide will brief you about the big day ahead after dinner.

day 2 - Climb Santa Isabel Volcano

Have your breakfast at 2:30 am in the morning. Drive for about an hour through Los Nevados National Park to reach the Nevado de Santa Isabel trailhead, which is located 4000m above sea level. Hike through a highland forest of dwarfed trees, mossy plants and small lagoons with the help of your headlamps.

Enjoy stunning views of rocky cliffs and sheer mountainsides as dawn breaks. Patches of snow appear as you go higher, accentuating the barren but beautiful landscape. Travel through the collection of glacial lakes located just below the glacial volcano of Santa Isabel.

Strap your crampons and wear your helmet soon after walking past the lakes. The final push up to the top of the glacier starts at 4,700m above sea level and is the most exciting and most difficult part of the ascent.

Reach the peak, located 4,950m above sea level. Spend some time on the top before starting your journey back down. Hot food and a well-deserved rest await you at Campoalegre.

day 3 - Otun Lake

Time to visit the southern portion of the national park. Follow a wide, mountainside trail with sweeping views of meadows and hills full of wild flowers. See El Ruiz, the infamous and highly active volcano that killed 25,000 people when it erupted in 1985. Reach Laguna de Otun, a lake fed by the volcanic glacier of Santa Isabel. The lake sits 3900m above sea level and is the source of the Otun River, which supplies drinking water to the city of Pereira.

Enjoy the view of the lake and surrounding areas before taking a narrow path that travels through a paramo, a unique landscape dominated by plants with succulent steams to capture moisture from the mountain air. Hike across streams and along a mountain ridge to reach the Berlin Valley.

Spend your night in a farm located 3,840m above sea level amid cliffs, streams and boulder-dotted fields. Enjoy the hospitality of your hosts Diego and Maria.

day 4 - Tolima Volcano & cloud forest

Start your day with a challenging ascent along the border of Risaralda and Quindio departments. At 4,300m, the highest point of this trek offers wonderful views of Nevado del Tolima. The rest of the day is a gradual descent through the paramo followed by a cloud forest.

Reach Argentina farm (3540m) in the afternoon. Hike through a cloud forest to reach a waterfall after lunch. At a lower elevation, a cloud forest is as diverse as a rainforest and countless exotic bird and plant species overwhelm your senses with rich colors and diverse sounds. Hike for another 10km before heading back to the farm where you will spend your night.

day 5 - Wax palm forest and Cocora Valley

Travel through the lowest part of a cloud forest where the tallest trees are. Wax palm trees found in the area shoot 60 meters into the sky. Orchids and bromeliads can also be found in this part of the forest.

Hike past streams and over log bridges. As you near the end of your hike, you enter the famous Cocora Valley where farmers have cleared forests but left the wax palms standing, creating a dramatic landscape of tall trees standing in sharp contrast with grassy hills.

Your hike ends at a restaurant in the Cocora Valley where you are rewarded with a well-deserved lunch (the specialties of this area are rainbow trout and patacon). After lunch, visit the quaint town of Salento before driving to Pereira's airport.
