This is the best way to travel round Namibia, you see such diverse landscapes and a variety of wildlife too! Travelling by bike means you get to see it in a different way, even though you have some very early starts it means you have the roads to yourself and the animals are out there waiting for you!
Trip performed on period 29 Sep -10 Oct 2024. Namibia is a vast and fascinating country with stunning scenery and different landscapes. Camping in the desert surrounded only by mountains, climbing Dune 40 at sunrise, cycling in very low traffic white&bumping roads, fat-biking over the dunes in Swakopmund, cycling on a reserve closed with rhinos and giraffes, game driving in Etosha park watching elephants, rhinos, giraffes, lions and various other animals. Last, but not the least, we had a very great group (total 12 people). We had a guide, a cooker and a driver taking very good care of all of us. The tour was overall well organized with a good support vehicle. We daily cycled as per trip notes. People were warm and friendly, and we felt always safe.
a fantastic and unique way to see this fascinating country, its scenery and its wildlife
Namibia is an amazing country with stunning scenery. We did so many new things .... One of the most brilliant things about the trip was the lack of people - for many of the activities we were the only people there, very few tourists, so for example camping in the desert surrounded only by mountains and climbing Dune 40 at sunrise we were the only people there. The people were warm and friendly, the winter daytime weather warm and cloudless once the sun came up but very cold at night. We felt safe and looked after by the great local team, and everything was well organised. The cycling in itself is not too hard in terms of elevation or distance but the road surfaces are unpaved gravel, often bumpy and uneven with loose sand and gravel so you have to concentrate very hard much of the time which makes it harder going than it might have been. We took a flight over the skeleton coast where desert meets sea, saw seals and flamingoes, had a very lucky and close encounter with 4 lions on our Etosha safari (once again there were no other vehicles around which made it more special). Campsite in Etosha had a floodlit waterhole so you could sit out at night watching groups of elephants, giraffes, rhinos coming to drink. We cycled in a private game reserve and were able to see rhinos and a group or 6 giraffes close up. We had a great smallish group of 8, great company, like minded people.
Wonderful experience of the different landscapes in Namibia
The trip with Mabaruli African Safaris exceeded my expectations. It's a shame I could not book direct with the local company. Our guide (Stefan) was a wicked smart gentleman with a great sense of humour and in control of everything. The support guides (Happy & Michael) went over and above to make everything comfortable and met all my needs. Love these guys and hope to return one day to see more of Namibia.
The cycling was hard on gravel and sand roads in 35 degree heat with a head wind. If you are not experienced in off road this trip will feel more like a grade 4 . Saying that some of the riding was amazing. Riding on the fat boy cycles over the dunes for nearly 4 hours was amazing and should be on peoples bucket list. The wild life matched expectation , Elephants, lions, white and black Rhino, cheaters. Camp sites were clean but basic, they were lovely sitting in the dessert watching the stars.
This is an amazing way of discovering Namibia whilst getting some good cycling in under blue skies. The scenery changed constantly, wildlife was abundant and the geological features were astounding. This was not a serious cycling trip and the emphasis Was more on the wildlife and landscape. I would have given this trip 5/5 but was disappointed that one of the cycling days was completey cancelled and no longer takes place as the road is too busy and the FatBiking was about 5 miles for 2 hours not 22 miles for 3.5 hours as advertised. Since my main reason for going was the cycling this did marr the holiday a little however it was still fabulous and I would urge you to go, just don’t expect as much cycling as advertised. I am vegetarian and was well catered for.
A fantastic varied exciting adventure exploring Namibia, it's breathtaking natural beauty and it's wildlife, both large and small. A cyclists/naturalist/geologists/ photographers paradise
Great scenery and opportunity to see wildlife. Some hard hot slogs on slippery and dusty gravel roads.
