Lemosho is our personal first favorite! It is widely considered to be the most picturesque route on Kilimanjaro, and we hold the same opinion. The trek starts from the heath and moorland at 3,400 m, passes through alpine meadow, and finishes in the Arctic zone with the Peak Uhuru. High-altitude drop-off makes the climb less steep and, therefore, less physically challenging. Two very short treks on Day 1 and Day 2 involve little physical activity and you barely trek uphill, which means you need less oxygen and your body can spare resources. Success rates on 7-day Lemosho are 94-95%.

Itinerary

The Lemosho route on Mount Kilimanjaro goes parallel to the lower part of the Shira Route. The trail on the Lemosho Route is unspoiled, secluded and a very beautiful way up to the Shira Plateau. Above the plateau, you approach Kilimanjaro's great western Breach, then follow the south circuit to reach the easier Barafu Route. This is one of the few routes where an armed ranger will accompany us as there are still animals in the forest around the Lemosho Glades.

The Lemosho route will take 9 days in total. The route is the most scenic on the lower part as it goes directly through a rainforest area with wildlife. Later on, this route merges with the popular Machame route.

You can bring around 15 kgs of luggage for the trip. The porters will carry most of the 15 kgs, and you will yourself carry a small day-pack. As soon as you book with us, we will brief you further on luggage and trekking clothes.

day 1 - Arrival day

Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met at the airport and transferred to the Springlands Hotel in Moshi for overnight stay.

day 2 - Trek from Moshi (915m) to Mkubwa Camp (2,750m)

After breakfast, we drive from Moshi or Arusha to the Londorossi Park Gate (2,250m/7,380 ft). From here we follow a forest track in a 4WD vehicle for 11 km/7 mi (45 minutes) to Lemosho Glades (2,000m/6,560 ft) and a possible campsite. From the Glades, walk for 3 hours along beautiful forest trails to the Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite (2,750m/9,020 ft) 18 km.

day 3 - Trek from Mkubwa to Shira Camp 1 (3,500m)

After breakfast, continue your trek along the trail. The trail gradually steepens and enters the giant heather moorland zone. We will cross the Shira Ridge at 3,600 m/11,810 ft and drop gently to Shira Camp 1 located by a stream on the Shira Plateau. After a long day, have dinner and stay overnight at Shira Camp 1.

day 4 - Trek from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2 (3,840m)

Today, we will trek from Shira Camp 1 to Shira Camp 2 (3,840m/12,600 ft). Have your breakfast and start your trek with a gentle walk across the plateau leading to Shira Camp 2 on moorland meadows by a stream. A variety of walks are available on the plateau making this an excellent day of acclimatization. Reach Shira Camp 2 for dinner and overnight stay.

day 5 - Shira Camp 2 (3,840m) to Barranco Camp (3,950m)

After breakfast, you will hike east up a steep path above the highest vegetation toward Kilimanjaro’s looming mass. After several hours, you walk through a rocky landscape to reach the prominent landmark called Lava Tower at 4,630m/15,190ft. This chunky remnant of Kilimanjaro’s earlier volcanic activity is several hundred feet high, and the trail passes right below it. For extra credit, the sure-footed can scramble to the top of the tower.

After a lunch stop near Lava Tower, we descend for 2 hours below the lower cliffs of the Western Breach and BreachWall to Barranco Camp at 3,950m/12,960 ft. Stay overnight.

day 6 - Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (4,200m)

After breakfast, we continue up a steep ridge to the great Barranco Wall, then you climb this imposing obstacle, which is easier than it looks. Topping out just below the Heim Glacier, you can now appreciate just how beautiful Kilimanjaro really is. With Kibo’s glaciers soaring overhead, you descend into the lush Karanga Valley to the Karanga Valley campsite. From the camp, you can look east and see the jagged peaks of Mawenzi jutting into the African sky. After a hot lunch in camp, your afternoon is at leisure for resting or exploring. After two long days, this short day is very important for your acclimatization, since your summit push is about to start.

day 7 - Trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,550m)

In the morning, we hike east over intervening ridges and valleys to join the Mweka Route, which will be your descent route. We will turn left towards the mountain and hike up the ridge through a sparse landscape for another hour to the Barafu Hut where you will receive a hot lunch. The last water on the route is in the Karanga Valley; there is no water at Barafu Camp, even though Barafu is the Swahili word for “ice.” The famous snows of Kilimanjaro are far above Barafu Camp near the summit of the mountain. Your tent will be pitched on a narrow, stony, wind-swept ridge, so we will make sure that we familiarize ourselves with the terrain before dark to avoid any accidents. Prepare your equipment and warm clothing for your summit climb, and drink a lot of fluids. We will have an early dinner and stay overnight.

day 8 - Uhuru Peak (5,895m) the Summit day

Today we will trek from Barafu Camp (4,550m) to Uhuru Peak, the summit (5,895m). Your 6-hour climb will continue northwest up through heavy scree between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers to Stella Point. The crater rim is the most challenging part of the route for most climbers. At Stella Point (5,685 m/18,650 ft), we will stop for a short rest and a chance to see a supremely sanguine sunrise. At Stella Point, you join the top part of the Marangu Route. We will not stay here too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue. Depending on the season and recent storms, you may encounter snow on your remaining hike along the rim to Uhuru Peak. On the summit, you can enjoy your accomplishment and know that you are creating a day that you will remember for the rest of your life.

After your 3-hour descent from the summit back to Barafu Camp, you will have a well-earned but short rest, collect your gear, and hike down a rock and scree path into the moorland and eventually into the forest to Mweka Camp (3,100 m/10,170 ft). This camp is in the upper forest, so you can expect mist or rain in the late afternoon. Dinner, and washing water will be prepared, and the camp office sells drinking water, soft drinks, chocolates and beer!

day 9 - Mweka Gate to Moshi

After a well-deserved breakfast, we will enjoy a short scenic 3-hour hike back to the park gate. Please don’t give your porters any tips until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely, but do remember to tip your staff at the gate. At Mweka Gate, you can sign your name and add details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Climbers who reached Stella Point are issued green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak receive gold certificates.

From the Mweka Gate, you will continue down to the Mweka Village, possibly a muddy, 3 km, 1 hour hike. In the Mweka Village, you will be served a delicious hot lunch after which you are driven back to Moshi for an overdue hot shower and comfortable night in our Springlands Hotel or similar hotel.

day 10 - Departure Day

Today is your final day of the tour. After breakfast, check out of your hotel. Our representative will escort you to the airport for your flight back home.

Fantastic Experience

Everything about this trip was great. From the help we got from Hamisi at the office in selecting the route, preparation materials, smooth payment to the actual trip. We definitely could not have done the trek without the wonderful and professional support from senior guide Shaban and his colleagues. They made sure we were in the best condition to tackle the mountain. The six of us all made it to the summit and it was an unforgettable experience. We had three days safari after Kilimanjaro and Tanzania is an absolutely beautiful country. We saw numerous animals and birds and also managed to see the Hadza people in Rift Valley.

Once In a Lifetime Experience

My brother and I successfully made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro and it is a memory I will treasure for all eternity. Getting to the top is no joke. It took the support of Kileo and his team of porters to safely climb the mountain. We had great tents, an amazing cook preparing our meals and so many other things with us. The physical strain of the climb gets you mainly because of low oxygen and the high altitude. I suffered mild altitude sickness and almost gave up. This is an amazing company and I am really happy that we picked them.

Once in a lifetime experience

I want to say a few words and pass my appreciation to the whole team for the just concluded Kilimanjaro trekking tour. I travelled in a party of five friends and all of us agree that the Kilimanjaro trek is unlike any other expedition we have ever embarked on. We had good guides, Mushi, Kimario and Musa. These guys are the reason we made it to their summit. They set a pace that seemed slow but very important to conserve energy for the later stages of the trip and summit attempt. Food was phenomenal, tents waterproof and comfortable, relations with the climbing team very good, attention to our health and well-being was first class and making the trek enjoyable. Important note: Do not go on the trek without the portable toilet. The public drop toilets are dirty!! We all made it to the summit and are now safely back home. Thank you all for your support!
