Caminito del Rey: Spain’s Most Dangerous Path
Spain

Caminito del Rey: Spain’s Most Dangerous Path

Looking for outdoor adventure while on a Spain tour? El Caminito del Rey trek, also known as the hike with the world’s most dangerous walkway, might just be the answer. Situated in the Andalusian province of Málaga, Spain, and built along the near-vertical walls of the Gaitanes Gorge, the Caminito del Rey walkway is suspended 100 meters above the Guadalhorce River, which meanders serenely between the steep canyons of the ravine. The pathway was built between 1901 and 1905 to accommodate the crossing of laborers and to carry materials between two nearby hydroelectric power plants. In 1921, King Alfonso XIII walked along the pathway as part of the inaugural ceremony for the opening of the Conde del Guadalhorce dam. Thus, it was named Camino del Rey, meaning kings walkway, and later abbreviated to El Caminito (the King’s little walkway). Some time ago, the walkway fell into disrepair and soon became much too tempting for thrill-seekers looking for the ultimate challenge. El Caminito gained its more recent reputation as the world’s most dangerous walkway as a result of the many fatalities that occurred before it’s renovation and re-opening in 2015.

The Kerid Crater: Iceland’s Rainbow Jewel
Iceland

The Kerid Crater: Iceland’s Rainbow Jewel

Imagine standing above a volcanic crater, the water below you a deep, opaque aquamarine blue. You’re surrounded by walls of red volcanic rock, some covered in a vibrant green moss. Sounds beautiful, doesn’t it? This magical site is waiting for you at the Kerid crater (spelled Kerið in Icelandic). Located along Iceland’s well known Golden Circle route, Kerid is one of many crater lakes in the country’s Western Volcanic Zone. It stands out among those other craters, however, because it is has one of the most visually recognizable calderas (which means it’s easy to pick out the cauldron-like dip in the earth’s surface). The crater is also unique in that it is only about 3,000 years old, making it about half as young as the geological features that surround it. At an incredible 55 m deep, 170 m wide, and 270 m across, the Kerid crater is a sight that will truly make you feel small. The lake, however, is only about 7 to 14 m deep, depending on the weather in the area.

Öræfajökull Volcano: Iceland’s Volatile Peak
Iceland

Öræfajökull Volcano: Iceland’s Volatile Peak

The Öræfajökull volcano on Iceland's south-east coast is a name you might have heard quite frequently in the media this last little while. That is because scientists predict that this volatile peak might erupt at any moment! Öræfajökull is one of Iceland’s many ice-capped volcanoes. As Iceland’s largest active volcano and Europe’s second largest volcano (second only to Mt Etna in Sicily), Öræfajökull is constantly kept under close surveillance. There are at least two known records of the Öræfajökull volcano erupting: an explosive eruption in 1362, which totally destroyed the nearby district formerly known as Litla-Hérað, followed by a smaller eruption in the late 1720s. In 2017, increased earthquake activity was noticed. Most recently, an ice-cauldron (also called a caldera) appears to have formed in Öræfajökull volcano’s main crater, and the smell of sulphur can be detected in the air nearby. While a potential eruption cannot easily be predicted (and may sound a bit frightening), there is no need to fear. Volcanoes often show increasing geothermal activity for years prior to an eruption. At the time of writing this article, a yellow warning has been issued for the volcano —more of a safety precaution than anything else as scientists are unsure of the Öræfajökull volcano’s eruption habits. All the same, tourists continue to flock to the area, particularly in the summer months. This fascinating volcano is incredibly impressive and well worth a visit during your trip to Iceland — particularly if you’re a bit of a geology geek! If a visit to Öræfajökull is on your bucket list, here is everything you need to know to make it totally worthwhile.

Gljúfrabúi (also known as Gljúfrabúifoss) is a 40-metre high waterfall on Iceland’s south coast, not far from the incredibly popular Seljalandsfoss. While it may not be quite as famous as its nearby friend, that certainly doesn’t mean it is any less impressive. Translated into English as “canyon dweller” or “dweller of the gorge”, Gljúfrabúi waterfall is a true beauty hidden away below steep cliffs. The waterfall cascades down into a little cave with light pouring in from above — a truly beautiful sight that is worth veering off the beaten path to see! Here is everything you need to know about Gljúfrabúi waterall, including how to get there and what absolutely shouldn’t be missed.
