Our gastronomic trip to Vietnam was excellent. We experienced a very wide range of food and in a wide range of locations. We tried street food in Hanoi and Saigon, ate the freshest fish and seafood on boat journeys and had a delightful meal home-cooked by a family. We helped prepare food in several places including spring rolls, savoury pancakes, and Vietnamese bean cake. In addition to eating (lots) there was plenty of time to experience ancient historical sites and to scratch the surface of the relatively more recent wars that the country has suffered.
Our tour guide, Hung, was excellent. He had a great sense of humour and was one of the best guides we have experienced. We were a small group - only 4 of us. We got on really well, meeting as strangers but parting as friends, including our guide. A great trip all round and would thoroughly recommend.
Hue was once the capital of Vietnam and is now listed as a World Heritage Site. Sitting on the banks of the delightful Perfume River, the Complex of Hue Monuments is what remains of the fully defended feudal capital after the ravages of war and decay have taken their toll.
Many of the sites can be reached from the Perfume River, making it perfect for a boat trip. This one day adventure in Hue will uncover a rich tapestry of history and culture.

This tour is ideal for those who have just three days but want to discover as much of the cultural heritage of Vietnam as they can. It begins in the Hue, the old Imperial City, which served as Vietnam's capital under the emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty from 1802 to 1945. It then follows the scenic highway N1 from Hue to Hoi An via Da Nang, one of Vietnam's major international seaports. This trip finishes in the picturesque town of Hoi An, once one of Southeast Asia's major trading ports between the 17th and 19th centuries.
An interesting destination with a fascinating culture.
The cuisine is delightful and this Explore trip gives you an insight into the preparation of the local food.
The flora is very colourful, but bird watchers will be very disappointed. There is more birdsong in my garden than two weeks in Vietnam.
The Vietnamese are extremely friendly and helpful. The traffic is daunting.
Our 10-day Vietnam tour is a journey from north to south, designed to immerse you in the country's rich culture, stunning landscapes, and unforgettable local experiences. You'll begin in the dynamic capital of Hanoi, where you'll explore ancient landmarks and delve into a vibrant culinary scene. From there, you'll cruise through the surreal beauty of Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its towering limestone karsts and emerald waters, with opportunities for kayaking and an onboard cooking class.
The adventure continues as you board the overnight Reunification Express sleeper train, offering a unique glimpse of rural life as you journey to the imperial city of Hue. Here, you'll explore the historic Citadel and cruise the serene Perfume River on a traditional Dragon boat. The tour then takes you to the charming riverside town of Hoi An, another UNESCO site, famous for its beautifully preserved Ancient Town and the magical experience of releasing handmade lanterns onto the Hoai River at sunset. You'll also have a free day to explore Hoi An at your leisure, perhaps taking an optional cooking class in the peaceful Tra Que Vegetable Village.
The final leg of your journey takes you to the bustling southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon). From there, you'll embark on a two-day excursion into the lush Mekong Delta. This is a highlight of the tour, offering genuine cultural immersion. You’ll visit local families to learn traditional crafts, paddle through tranquil canals on a rowing boat, and even participate in a 'ditch slapping' activity to catch fish for your own dinner. It's a hands-on experience that brings you closer to the rhythm of local life, making for a truly authentic and memorable trip.
For your comfort throughout the tour, we've carefully selected a range of quality accommodation. You will stay in good tourist-class hotels, typically rated 3 to 4-star, which provide a comfortable and welcoming base for your explorations. While in the Mekong Delta, you'll experience a stay at an authentic eco-lodge, allowing you to connect more closely with the natural environment. Your night in Ha Long Bay will be spent on a traditional junk boat, a unique and memorable way to experience the bay's tranquil beauty
We had an excellent tour guide: helpful, informed, receptive and with a good sense of humour. Most of the hotels were excellent....some slightly less so (Nha Trang for example). The service on the trip was exceptional. The support team of transport, bag carriage and a cycle mechanic were also excellent. Vietnam is fascinating and being on bikes we saw all aspects of the country. We saw its beauty, we saw the industry and pride of its people who were universally very welcoming. We also saw all sorts of things normal tourists, arriving in a large group with little language ability, would not be able to see. Some of the best things were stops in markets, or by rice fields, or at very basic homes or cafes. We saw a lot and visited a lot of different places: a 'grand tour' if you can do such a thing on bikes! The country certainly has issues, in my opinion, with rapid over-development (in the south particularly) with endless giant resorts half finished, being built or built and empty. It also needs to address the issue of litter. It is not alone in facing these issues! I am also certain it has the ability and determination to address them.
Immerse in the stunning beauty and charming culture of Vietnam and Thailand in this 15 day journey packed with cultural discovery, picturesque scenery, ancient history and mouth-watering cuisines. Sail the serene waters of UNESCO World Heritage-listed Halong Bay. Explore the imperial cities, ancient wonders, and rich war history of Vietnam. Kick back and relax with two domestic flights through Vietnam to save on transit time before beginning your Thailand journey in the vibrant Bangkok. Prepare to be amazed as you step back in time in the ancient kingdom of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya and take in the lush scenery of Northern Thailand. Complete your journey in awe at an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai.

I can’t imagine navigating Vietnam without Diem. The trip was incredibly organized.. starting with Diem meeting us at the airport, to the lovely hotels, flights, transportation reservations, etc. We also appreciated the tips on local cuisine shopping and sightseeing. I highly recommend the upgrade if you can afford it. We hope more upgraded Explorer trips become available.
