The bikes were in good condition, the chosen hotels were good, and the special app made navigation easy. We were lucky with the weather; I would have hated to do some of the gravel/dirt road stages in the rain.

For 41 years, from 968 to 1009 CE, Hoa Lu was the ancient capital of Vietnam. Nearby Tam Coc is often referred to as “Ha Long among the rice paddies.” Visitors are conveyed by rowboat along the peaceful Tam Coc stream past green fields and the feet of mountains into the mouths of caves, where they encounter new surprises, like stalactites and stalagmites that shimmer like gemstones just inches from the water. DETAILS ITINERARY: 07:30 – 08:00 – Our guide will meet you at your hotel/stay and start 120 km comfortable bus journey through verdant landscape. The German Danube cycle tour is a great way to visit the German countryside. The bike tracks are very safe, sometimes sealed and sometimes gravel, but never difficult to ride on. The accommodation was excellent, as were the meals provided. The bikes and guide documentation were all first class. Note it does take a little while to learn to read the maps properly, but no issues. Would recommend to anyone looking for a slightly longer tour.

With hindsight, even though we are a bike fit couple in our 70s, we would choose the e-bike option for our next trip. More time for leisure en route! This was the first time that this trip had been run using E-bikes, so everyone was keen to see how the trip would unfold. We were introduced to our bikes on the first evening, and because of a change of hotel we had the opportunity to cycle into Monopoli, and return in the dark after an amazing first meal. When I checked the itinerary I could see that the first two rides were going to be the most challenging in terms of ascent and distance, but I quickly realised that E-bikes are a great leveller. There are four levels of assistance, with turbo being the most powerful. The motor rewards effort, the faster you peddle, the more assistance it gives you, up to its maximum speed - these bikes are not chipped like the delivery cycles that whizz around around our streets bringing takeaways to the masses. Each person in the group decided how much effort to put in, getting up the many hills, but hats off to the one person in the group who rode the whole way on an ordinary bike . . . . and he was not at the back. Respect!! With uphills come downhills, and there were plenty of those. Long sweeping downhills that went on and on. Great fun. We were well fed and watered on this trip, both at lunchtime and in the evenings, and for the most part the weather behaved itself.

Fairly flat cycle ride of approximately 40 miles/day on mainly quiet roads or off road on the Via Verde, though there was some cycling on busy main roads. We had non stop sunshine and temperatures in mid 30s for our trip in late September, but felt that some of the Via Verde route would be almost impossible if it was wet. There were some good hills to ascend most days.
