Optional: Half Day Township Tour with Robben Island
Join us for a unique journey through the three phases of South Africa’s history: its origins, the Apartheid era, and the New South Africa. Departing from Cape Town city center, our first stop is the Malay Quarter (Bo Kaap), where we’ll discuss the arrival of Dutch sailors in 1652, a pivotal moment in South Africa's history. As we stroll along the charming cobblestone streets lined with brightly colored homes, your guide will explain the establishment of racial segregation. We’ll pass notable landmarks of Cape Town before heading to District 6, where we’ll witness the remnants of a once-thriving mixed-race community of 60,000 that was destroyed to create an exclusive area for white residents. Next, we’ll visit Langa, Cape Town's oldest Black African township, discussing the oppressive laws enacted by the Apartheid regime. In Langa, we’ll stop for photos at a site commemorating the 1976 student uprising, and we’ll cover the Pass Laws and the barracks for African migrant workers. If our tour is on a Sunday morning, we’ll also visit a local church, immersing ourselves in the vibrant and charismatic religious practices of the townships.
To wrap up the day, we’ll take an afternoon ferry trip to Robben Island (weather permitting and subject to seat availability), where former president Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.
