Macedonia is a beautiful country that’s attracting more visitors each year. Soak up some sun on the banks of beautiful Lake Ohrid (or, if you like to party, take in a nightlife tour). Skopje, its capital, has some beautiful monuments - including the Skopje Fortress and Stone Bridge. Or, head outside the city for some mountain biking in the Macedonian Trails.

Macedonia Tour Reviews

Honest insights from past guests on our Macedonia tours

Michael | Traveled in September

The Balkans are a beautiful part of Europe and are full of history. The two tour leaders we had, Zorica and Elena were very good, as were the local guides and our driver.

Sandra | Traveled in September

A great trip, moderately paced allowing free time to visit many of the museums in the cities. Heraclea, Philippi and Vergina were excellent. Coach was a little cramped if you were over 6' tall. Guide was excellent.

If you want a beach holiday, or a nice relaxing two weeks, then this is NOT the holiday for you. If however you want to delve into ancient Greece, Macedonia, monasteries, churches archaeological sites etc and get a real taste for the history of this part of the Balkans, then don't hesitate to sign up.

The trip covered a lot of ground both distance and places of interest. That still allowed plenty of free time including a relax in Lake Ohrid. Our guide and driver delivered a wonderful trip and on top rescued the bus break down interlude efficiently- full marks to them both

Zorica was an exceptional tour leader who went above and beyond for us as a group. The trip was varied with lots of interesting historical sites but also the chance to enjoy the landscape and discover interesting local places.

Fiona | Traveled in June

I enjoyed this trip enormously and learned a lot about Ancient Macedonia as well as the modern countries. Our tour guide, Elena, was excellent. She was well organised, always cheerful and positive, was very knowledgeable and always kept us well informed. The additional guides at different sites were also excellent. We had a friendly driver in Zoki, who drove us with great care through magnificent scenery. I enjoyed all the historic sites, but was especially amazed at the treasures from Philip II tomb at Vergina. I also liked exploring all the towns and cities we stayed in and enjoyed the company of our fellow travellers.

Macedonia Tours — Highlights and Travel Tips

While still relatively unknown among many travellers, over 700,000 visitors plan their holidays in Macedonia each year due to its stunning natural beauty. The country’s towns and cities exhibit a beautiful mixture of Ottoman and European influence. In fact, the capital city of Skopje is known for having an incredible Ottoman-style bazaar - the biggest in the Balkans outside Istanbul.

Though a landlocked country, a trip to Macedonia will lead you to plenty of peaceful lakeside beaches with stunning mountain views. Whether your idea of connecting with nature is sitting on the beach or hiking up mountains, Macedonia has a little bit of something for everyone.

Tour Highlights

  • Overlook Lake Ohrid from the Church of St. John at Kaneo
  • Look for the white peacock at the Monastery of Saint Naum
  • Cross the Stone Bridge in Skopje
  • Hike Galičica mountain for views of both Macedonia and neighbouring Albania
  • Take a boat ride across the crystal-clear waters Saint Naum Springs
  • Discover prehistoric traditions at the Bay of Bones Museum

Travel Tips

  • Macedonia is the perfect destination for budget travellers. Cab fare and public transportation are incredibly cheap, and the average meal will cost you around 5 Euros.
  • Renting a car in Macedonia is relatively easy, though not for the faint of heart. The coastal views are well worth it but be prepared for barrier-less roads along steep cliffs.
  • Good Wi-Fi is easy to come by in tourist-dense areas. Most hotels and popular restaurants will have internet available for guests.
  • The country’s name, “Macedonia” is a heated topic. The Greeks believe Macedonia to be an ancient region within its own borders, and insist on the country being called the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. Try to be mindful of this when conversing with locals.
  • If you want the true Ohrid experience, be sure to visit between June and August. This is when parties are in full swing and all attractions, restaurants, and shops are open and ready for tourists.
