day 1 - Day 1 Auckland to Auckland

Welcome to New Zealand and to your Intrepid Tour!

This evening we will meet at your accommodation in Auckland, it's a great opportunity to get to know your tour group in a relaxed atmosphere, over food and drinks. After dinner you can wander around the city and bars to familiarise yourselves with the diverse and eclectic night life. Or, have an early night to prepare for our journey the next day!

day 2 - Day 2 Auckland to Coromandel

Leaving the big smoke of Auckland behind, we head to the Coromandel Peninsula, a veritable paradise of beautiful beaches and misty rainforests. The drive here is spectacular – the road twists and turns dramatically as it follows the coastline, and the ocean gets clearer and more pristine before your eyes. Get your cameras ready – the views are magnificent!

We arrive in the Coromandel with plenty of time for your guide to show you around. The Coromandel is home to the famous Hot Water Beach and thousands visit each year to dig their own personal hot tub. If the tide times allow, we’ll grab our buckets and spades and get busy digging!

day 3 - Day 3 Coromandel to Rotorua

This morning walk along the cliffs and down to Cathedral Cove, a location you may recognise from the Chronicles of Narnia. With perfect beaches and massive rock arches and columns, it’s one of the most popular spots in the Coromandel.

Alternatively, take an optional guided Cathedral Cove kayak trip and check out the stunning coastline from a different vista point, accompanied by a local dolphin or two if you’re lucky!

We head towards Rotorua, stopping off at Matamata – the famous ‘Home of Hobbiton’. Much to the delight of Lord of the Rings fans, a guided visit awaits us at the Hobbiton Movie Set which is an absolute must-do when visiting NZ. On this fully guided tour of the 12 acre Middle-earth movie set you will see Hobbit Holes, the Mill, and you can even enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn!

The North Island Volcanic Plateau covers much of central North Island, however Rotorua is exceptional for its geothermal activity. With striking neon blue and red lakes, steaming rivers, active volcanoes and geysers galore, there are more unique natural wonders to be found in Rotorua than most places in the world.

day 4 - Day 4 Rotorua to Rotorua

Today is a free day to explore the Rotorua area. Talk to your guide for the best free things to see and do in the neighbourhood, we recommend visiting Kuirau Park’s steaming and hissing mud pools!

If adrenaline is your thing, the highest commercial ‘waterfall drop’ in the world, on the Kaituna River, is begging to be conquered on an exhilarating rafting trip.

Or perhaps you’d like to try thundering down grassy hills in a giant air-cushioned inflatable ball?

You can head deep into one of New Zealand’s most ancient forests and experience over 600 meters of ziplines and swing bridges with a canopy adventure. Plus, learn about the native wildlife and ecology as you zipline from tree to tree.

If you’d like a water-based adventure you can take a guided kayak trip across scenic Lake Rotoiti to the spectacular Manupirua Springs Hot Pools, which are only accessible by boat. Have a leisurely soak while your guide cooks an appetising Kiwi BBQ Dinner. After dinner enjoy a sunset paddle across the lake and a enjoy a visit to the glow worm caves.

day 5 - Day 5 Rotorua to Murupara

Today we visit the Te Puia Māori Village. You’ll learn more about Māori history and culture, come face to face with the Pohutu Geyser, see bubbling mud pools and get up close and personal with the endangered and iconic kiwi bird.

Later this afternoon we head to the Kohutapu Lodge in Murupara. This is home for tonight and it is here that you’ll have a chance to learn the world-famous haka and weave your own dinner plate out of flax (a type of plant).

Tonight’s dinner is a traditional hāngi meal. Cooked in an underground earth oven you can expect tender meat and delicious vegetables infused with a smoky, earthy fragrance – it will fill your puku (belly) right up!

The best part about spending the evening at Kohutapu Lodge? Most of the proceeds from this activity go back into the local community.

It’s only a short drive to our next destination, Taupō, and there’s plenty to discover along the way. From mesmerising mud pools to the thundering rapids of the Huka Falls and the Aratiatia Dam, your trusty Haka Guide will make sure you don’t miss a thing.

Taupō is a beautiful lakeside town with a stunning mountain backdrop. Lake Taupō is New Zealand’s largest lake and, believe it or not, it’s roughly the same size as Singapore!

This place is all about the thrills and spills, and there are plenty of options in store this afternoon. Get your hair wet with a water touch bungy jump, take an unforgettable skydive or a sunset lake cruise for amazing lake and mountain views.

day 7 - Day 7 Taupō to Taupō

A full day in Taupō. . . are you in the mood for peaceful lakeside tranquillity or adrenaline and adventure? Either way, Taupō’s got you covered. For many, the ultimate adventure on offer here is the hiking.

New Zealand’s most famous day hike is also in the area. The 19. 4 km Tongariro Crossing is an alpine hike around Tongariro, which is one of the country’s most famous and beautiful volcanoes. It’s a serious workout, but it’s totally worth it. Once you make your way to the top you are greeted with turquoise and green lakes, along with vistas that stretch all the way to the coast.

If you’re looking for a thrill, we suggest skydiving over the lake or bungy jumping over New Zealand’s longest river. There are heaps of other activities on offer such as cruising the lake to see Māori rock carvings, hiking along the shore of Lake Taupō and even the chance to soak in some of the local geothermal pools.

day 8 - Day 8 Taupō to Wellington

It’s a big drive from Taupō to Wellington, but there’s some unbelievable scenery on offer.

We drive along the Desert Road that divides the Rangipo Desert, barren land with poor vegetation due to bad soil conditions and drying winds. The climate is harsh and in winter it is not unusual to see snow. However, the biggest attractions on this road are that of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, the volcano better known as Mount Doom from Lord of the Rings. On the other side of the road is the lesser noticed Kaimanawa Range, home to a breed of wild horses that can be spotted on rare occasions.

We pull into Wellington, New Zealand’s capital city, in the afternoon, with just enough time for film buffs make a trip to Weta Workshop where the props and physical effects of Lord of the Rings and Avatar were produced. Wellington is full of great shops and eateries, it’s also home to Te Papa Tongarewa – New Zealand’s national museum which is well worth a visit. Wellington is a compact city on the waterfront, you’re able to easily walk along the beachfront, ride the historic cable car or hike up Mount Victoria for views of the city.

Wellington is famous for its bars and eateries and is perfect for any craft beer fans – you’ll be spoilt for choice tonight!

day 9 - Day 9 Wellington to Kaikōura

Wellington is famous for its coffee and takes it very seriously, so we recommend you find a cafe and kick back with a fresh brew to start the day! Today we journey from the North Island to the South Island via a ferry over the Cook Strait. This journey is thought to be one of the most beautiful ferry journeys in the world, keep an eye out for dolphins and fur seals! Once we get to Picton, our South Island port, it’s a 2. 5 hour drive to Kaikoura – a beautiful, small seaside town known for its black sand beaches and marine life.

day 10 - Day 10 Kaikōura to Christchurch

We have a free morning in Kaikoura where you may wish to wander around the town, head on over to the beach or take part in a popular activity such as whale watching. Kaikoura has unique geographical features which makes it the ideal location for observing and learning about sperm, orca and humpback whales. Although migration is normally seasonal, certain whales in the region can be spotted year-round. Later in the day we head on down to Christchurch. Make the most of Christchurch’s bars and restaurants tonight, we recommend heading on down to Riverside Market to check out some of the places to dine.

day 11 - Day 11 Christchurch to Christchurch

day 12 - Day 12 Christchurch to Mackenzie Country

This morning we’ll explore iconic downtown Christchurch, and your guide will show you the cool and creative ways the city is being rebuilt after the life-changing 2011 earthquake here. Christchurch folk are a resilient, innovative and creative bunch – the Transitional Cathedral, created from cardboard, is totally inspirational.

After lunch we leave the city behind and head for Lake Tekapo. The lake’s breathtaking turquoise colour and mountain backdrop is a photographer’s dream come true.

The tiny Church of the Good Shepherd stands right at the water’s edge, it’s a spectacular church and is one of the most photographed spots in New Zealand. Grab some confetti and congratulate any passing brides – couples travel from all over the world for wedding shots in front of the chapel!

Tekapo has been declared an International Dark Sky Reserve and the super clear skies make it the best place in New Zealand to see the stars and galaxies on a clear night. Sit back, relax and enjoy gazing up at the constellations and the Milky Way above.

day 13 - Day 13 Mackenzie Country to Queenstown

Feeling energetic? You can hike up to the summit of Mt John and enjoy breathtaking views of the Southern Alps at sunrise. You’ll feel on top of the world!

Today we drive from Lake Tekapo to Queenstown, and it’s quite the showstopper. From the golden tussocklands of Mackenzie country – where the epic battles from Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King were filmed – to the dramatic peaks of the Southern Alps, the views seem too beautiful to be true.

We stop just outside of Queenstown at the Kawarau Bridge, home to the world’s first commercial bungy jump which has been attracting thrill seekers since 1988! You can jump yourself or just enjoy watching the jumpers in awe as they plummet 43m towards the river below.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie, an avid hiker, wine taster or scenery lover, Queenstown has something for absolutely everyone. We have two nights and plenty of daylight hours to explore this alpine town and all it has to offer – which is A LOT!

day 14 - Day 14 Queenstown to Queenstown

We have a full day in Queenstown and there is a myriad of different ways you can spend it! You can paraglide over the Lake Whakatipu, swing through a canyon, jump out of a plane, hike some of New Zealand’s most picturesque trails or rent a bike and head out on a day mission to seek solitude away from the hustle and bustle! If you can, we recommend scheduling in a full day to visit Milford Sound, also known as Piopiotahi. Whether you fly or drive, the scenery en route is as awesome as the destination. Once in Milford, sailing beneath thundering waterfalls and towering cliff faces, you’ll understand why it's been famously dubbed the “8th Wonder of the World”

Queenstown comes alive at night! Choose from over 40 bars and a heap of tasty restaurants all scattered around the town centre. Today is the guide's day off, but they will be more than happy to make some recommendations and can point you in the direction of a good party!

day 15 - Day 15 Queenstown to Wanaka

e wake up in Queenstown and have one last morning to explore, or tick something off your bucket list! The choice is yours.

Later in the day we head on over the Crown Range to Wanaka, a mere one-hour drive away. We stop at Arrowtown en-route, a charming, gold rush town seeped in character and beauty. Stepping foot in Arrowtown’s main street is like stepping back in time, be mesmerised by the old, hand painted shop fronts and antique relics, and you can imagine horse and carts trotting down the road 150 years ago. Its heritage buildings paired with the ever-changing colours on the surrounding peaks makes Arrowtown truly quaint, it’s no wonder it has won New Zealand’s ‘Most Beautiful Small-Town Award” multiple times!

Shortly after leaving Arrowtown, we’ll journey through the Cardrona Valley, a stunning bus ride which provides beautiful vistas of the Gibbston Valley wine region below. Blessed with towering peaks and a glacial blue lake, you’ll soon see why Wanaka’s considered to be one of New Zealand’s most beautiful mountain towns. There are lots of accessible trails which are suitable for hiking and bike riding, catering for a mix of ability levels. It’s the perfect destination to relax and soak up serenity.

day 16 - Day 16 Wanaka to Franz Josef

This morning you can explore Wanaka; in whatever way you like! If you are looking to book onto an activity there are plenty of options – take a flying lesson, go skydiving, or take a lake cruise and enjoy a nature walk over on Mou Waho Island. You guide will be able to provide recommendations or can point you in the direction of some beautiful walks.

The journey to Franz Josef is another stunner – many of our Haka Guides rate it as their favourite drive in New Zealand. You need to see it for yourself.

As we hit the road, we’ll stop at one of our favourite lakeside lookout points at Lake Hawea or Lake Wanaka. Your guide will keep an eye on the weather and pick the best option.

From the cascading waterfalls of Haast Pass to classic Kiwi coastal views, you won’t want to nap on the bus in case you miss anything. Your guide will make sure you stop at some of the best places for photos and for short walks along the way. More than anything, just soak up the atmosphere and enjoy this very special journey in Aotearoa.

We roll into Franz Josef late afternoon/early evening to mooch, recuperate and relax before a busy day of exploration tomorrow.

day 17 - Day 17 Franz Josef to Franz Josef

With Aoraki/Mount Cook (New Zealand’s highest mountain) twinkling behind the glaciers, Franz Josef is about as beautiful a setting as you can find in New Zealand. Westland Tai Poutini National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage area, is famous for the spectacular Franz Josef glacier which is located just 5 kilometres from town.

Te Wāhi Pounamu (which means ‘the place of greenstone’ in Māori) is the name given to this part of the West Coast because of the abundance of pounamu (greenstone/jade) to be found here. Today you have the special opportunity to carve your very own pounamu pendant at a local gallery, it’s a very special experience.

Although they are weather permitting, there are heaps of ways to enjoy Franz Josef Glacier in the afternoon. Enjoy a scenic helicopter flight and hike onto the glaciers, kayak on a glacial lake or just take a walk in the National Park, the choice is yours. Later in the evening you may even like to take part in some group karaoke. . . or maybe just watch!

day 18 - Day 18 Franz Josef to Christchurch

After breakfast we head further along the beautiful west coast on another one of the most spectacular drives in the country (or some might say, the world). The West Coast is a rugged, primeval landscape of lush rainforest in contrast against breathtaking beach and ocean waves.

We stop at Hokitika and visit a greenstone factory, a great place to stock up on souvenirs for your friends and family back home. Time permitting, we may also visit the National Kiwi Centre where there is guaranteed viewing of rare kiwi birds in their nocturnal house.

We traverse the South Island on the stunning Arthur’s Pass back to Christchurch, arriving at our accommodation in the early evening. It’s our last night together so feel free to party hard, or head on out to one of Christchurch’s many restaurants and bars to enjoy each other's company and to reflect on the amazing adventure had together.
