Mount Kilimanjaro calls to the adventurous spirit—are you ready to answer? This 7-day trek via the well-known Marangu route is your chance to stand atop Africa’s highest summit while enjoying full-board comfort and unique natural wonders.

The Marangu route’s claim to fame is its network of comfortable travelers’ huts, offering a welcome respite after days spent traversing moorlands and crater rims. You’ll have two days dedicated to acclimatization, including a restful spell at Horombo, ensuring your ascent is both safe and enjoyable. Along the way, pass the striking Maundi Crater, explore the unique flora like giant lobelia, and take in the sweeping vistas from Kibo Crater.

This trekking tour is especially popular among young adults and experienced adventurers seeking a balance of challenge and comfort. With all essentials provided, you can focus on the journey, not the logistics. The unique selling point? day 1 - Arusha - Kilimanjaro (Marangu route)

Drive from Arusha to Kilimanjaro National Park's entrance. Travel past the village of Marangu, located along the lower slopes of the mountain. Sign your name at the entrance and make final preparations for the climb.

Porters will be packing the food, water, cooking gas as well as most of your equipment. Make sure that you carry all your day-pack items, including drinking water, lunch packs and extra clothing, because the porters usually move a lot quicker than the hikers.

Talk to our guides if you have any doubt. Leave the park gate and travel to a cleared ridge trail through the rain forest. The forest, usually shrouded in mist and dripping with beards of moss, is also where most of Kilimanjaro's animal are found.

day 2 - Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut

Hike to Mandara. Three trails pass through a short stretch of forest at this point. Skirt the base of Maundi Crater, walk past the moorland and take a short detour to enjoy the view of Kibo Crater. On a clear day, Kibo will glimmer in the distance, its glacier majestically reflecting the first rays of the sun.

Get the chance to see some of Kilimanjaro's most spectacular plants, including the endemic Giant lobelia, which grows up to 3m in height, and the Giant groundsel, which can be as tall as 5m.

Reach your accommodation in Horombo Hut after 6 hours of hiking. Enjoy a hot-water shower, have your dinner and go to sleep.

day 3 - Horombo Hut - Zebra Rocks - Horombo Hut

You will spend your whole day today in Horombo, acclimatizing for the ascent.

Horombo is an area with a group of huts perched on a small plateau and can provide accommodation for 120 climbers. It is always bustling with hikers, guides and porters, and the atmosphere is one of adventure and excitement.

Meet travellers ascending to and descending from the mountain summit. Share your experiences. Hike towards Mawenzi Hut, passing the Zebra Rocks en route, to get yourself acclimatized with the increasing altitude.

Remember to drink enough water and move slowly. All meals for the day are provided in your hut. Retire to bed early and get a good night's sleep.

day 4 - Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut - Horombo Hut

Continue your ascent through the alpine desert after breakfast. From Horombo, there are two trails running to the Saddle, the area between Mawenzi and Kibo craters. There is the upper route and the lower route to choose from.

The upper route will have been very familiar to you by now, as you have travelled through it on the previous day, while hiking towards Mawenzi Hut. The recommended lower route is much easier and nearly an hour shorter. Situated in a barren, alpine desert is Kibo Hut, located at the bottom of Kibo Crater at an elevation of 4750m.

Prepare your trekking gear and walking equipment. Make sure you have a spare set of mobile phone batteries available, just in case your phone battery freezes. The summit is just 1,195 m up from this point. We recommend you carry your water bottles inside your thermal clothes while climbing. Retire to bed at around 19:00 at night and try to get as much rest as possible.

day 5 - Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Horombo Hut- summit attempt day

Wake up at around 11:30 pm. Have some tea and biscuits, or enjoy a bowl of hot soup. Start your trek to the summit. The first section of the trek consists mostly of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5,150m), a good resting spot. Then the path zigzags up to Gilman's Point (5,681m). This section is very steep, with lots of rock scree, and requires some physical and mental effort.This is probably the most demanding section of the entire route.

It gets snowy from Gilman's Point all the way up to the top of Kilimanjaro (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to stay there before starting the 3-hours descend back to Kibo Hut.

After a short rest, gather all your stuff you left behind before the ascent and head down to Horombo Hut (3 hours). Stay there overnight. The total amount of time you will spend walking on this day is around 14 hours, so be prepared for it. Later in the evening, enjoy your last dinner with soft drinks and beer, while can easily be bough at the camp office.

day 6 - Hike downhill from Horombo Hut

You have defeated the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro! After breakfast, continue your 6-hour descent, passing Mandara Hut, all the way to Marangu. It is strongly recommended not to pay your porters any tips until you and all your gears have reached Marangu. Sign your names and other details in a register book in Marangu. This is where successful climbers receive their summit certificates.

While climbers who reached Gilman's Point (5,685m) are issued a green certificate, those who reached Kilimanjaro Peak (5,895m) will receive a gold certificate. Drive back to Arusha or Moshi after that.

day 7 - Arusha or Moshi departure
