Itinerary
The Lost City Trek and Cartagena tour is a call to experienced travelers who crave both adventure and culture. Begin with Santa Marta’s coastal charm before tackling Tayrona National Park’s lush hiking trails and secluded beaches. The journey’s heart is the multi-day Lost City trek—one of South America’s most rewarding hikes—where you’ll cross rivers, interact with indigenous communities, and climb ancient stone steps to this mystical archaeological site. After conquering the jungle, unwind in Cartagena’s historic streets and vibrant atmosphere. The tour’s unique selling point is its rare combination of rugged jungle trekking and cultural city exploration, offering an unforgettable blend of challenge and discovery.
day 1 - Santa Marta arrival
Early in the morning, you will take a local flight to Santa Marta (the Colombian Caribbean site). Upon arrival, you will be transferred to the hotel located in the heart of the city. Then you will have a free afternoon to explore the city and its wide beautiful beach at your own pace or just relax and enjoy the sunset from the malecon in front of the hotel.
(Note: Local flight to Santa Marta is not included. Round trip air ticket Bogota-Santa Marta-Bogota you pay locally USD 160.)
day 2 - Tayrona National Park tour
This will be a medium scale hiking day (good training for the Lost City ).
Tayrona National Park is 45 minutes drive from Santa Marta. Once we arrive, you will be briefed by our guide about the tour plan and the park. The program includes a 2-hour hike to Cabo San Juan (6 kms). We also visit Arrecife, Arenillas, La Piscina and San Juan—this could be a hard walk but a rewarding one.
After arrival you will have time to take pictures and enjoy the beach on your own. You can have your lunch (not included) in a local restaurant for around USD 10.
For the return if you are tired, you can take a horseback ride for around USD 15.
day 3 - Lost City trek #1
It is time to get ready for one of the most incredible and amazing hikes in all of South America. It is a hidden place in the middle of La Sierra Nevada mountain range. This is a hard but exciting hike, where you will visit remote areas surrounded by forest and local communities.
On this day, we will drive you towards El Mamey Village, where we will serve lunch and get energy to start the first hike up to Alfredo´s Camp Site.
It will be 12 kms approx. (6.5 miles) hike. Upon arrival at the camp, you will get your bed (the camp sites in this area are very basic with bunk beds).
day 4 - Lost City trek #2
At 4:30 am, it is time to wake up and pack before breakfast. Today, you will hike longer than the yesterday. First, it is going to be 7 kms ( 4 miles approx.) up to a Wiwa Camp, where you will rest for a bit and have lunch. You will then continue the hike to reach the highest point of the day.
Then, we will continue towards El Paraiso Camp (10 kms or 6 miles approx.) to rest and spend the night.
day 5 - Lost City trek #3
At around 5:00 am, you will wake up and have your breakfast, for today we will take you to the Lost City, which is very close to the camp site. You need your hiking gear, camera, and the energy to climb over 1200 steps that are guarding this Archeological Complex.
You will be one of the first to reach the place, where you can enjoy and admire the sacred place that has bee enchanted by the Indian and their ancestors for more than 700 years. You also have the time to take the best pictures. The morning weather is here is usually clear and sunny.
There will also be a guided tour around many sites at the complex befere we return to the camp for lunch. After lunch, pack your belongings, shower, and follow the route back to a Wiwa Camp for the night.
day 6 - Lost City trek #4
Today we make an early start to make our way back towards El Mamey Village. At the village, we will have our lunch and journey back to to Santa Marta for overnight.
day 7 - Cartagena transfer and city tOUR
Today, we travel from Santa Marta along the coastal Colombian highway, admiring the Caribbean Sea, to reach Cartagena.
Upon arrival, we will start Cartagena's tour, where you will explore with our expert guide the highlights of the city such as Castillo de San Felipe , Getsemani neighborhood , the downtown area.
Finally, we will arrive our hotel to enjoy the rest of the afternoon admiring the sunset.
day 8 - Departure
This is the last day, you can catch a flight back home from Cartagena or fly to Bogota first for your onward journey. You can also extend you tour with us. We will be happy to assist you with your request.
