Known as the Whiskey route, the Machame route is now the most popular route on the mountain. Compared with Marangu, the days in Machame are longer and the walks are steeper. The Machame route is considered a difficult route and is better suited for more adventurous folks and those with some hiking or backpacking experience as well as It is for physically fit people with some hiking experience.
The Machame route approaches the summit from the southwest and descends using the Mweka route, rewarding climbers with views of the expansive Shira Plateau, an optional scramble up Lava Tower, a climb up the Great Barranco wall, and a traverse underneath Kilimanjaro's southern ice field.

Join us on this nine-day, guided trip to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest peak in Africa. This tour is for those wanting to conquer Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route, one of the most favoured route to summit Kilimanjaro because of its high summit rate and great scenery.
This route is less crowded than other routes, making it perfect from first-time trekkers. Also, since it takes more to reach the top through this route, it provides better acclimatization to the climbers, increasing the chances of a successful summit.
Your trek starts on the western side of Kilimanjaro from Londorossi Gate. Continue your journey through the rainforest to reach the Shira Plateau. At this point, the trail moves east to the Lava Tower from where it heads down to the Barranco Valley.
You also get the chance to spend a night in Crater Camp, just below the summit, during descent, which arguably is the most interesting part of this journey. We begin at a lodge in the western foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, our launchpad for a traverse into the savannah. After an immersive day spent in a village-stye Maasai ecolodge, we venture further east to hike to a waterfall enveloped in thick jungle. We savor fresh Arabica coffee, expertly harvested and brewed by proud Chaggu farmers, before transferring south to Mkomazi National Park. Here we go on a game drive for a hopeful chance to spot endangered black rhinos and wild dogs. Approaching the coast, we’ll delve into the mesmerizing and legend-shrouded Amboni Caves and encounter the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. We then spend our final days riding the backwaters of coastal Tanzania, overnighting in beachside accommodations and discovering vibrant maritime towns steeped in Swahili, Arabic, and colonial history. We ride through Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary that meets the sea, on a “safari by bike” in the territory of elephants, lions, leopards and buffaloes. The tour ends with a transfer to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city.

Kilimanjaro Trek – Machame Route in - 9 days
Kilimanjaro Trek through Machame Route is a 9-day trekking tour that offers amazing views, landscapes and experience. Also known as “the Whiskey Route”, Machame is considered one of the best routes for acclimatization as it follows the mountaineering code of hiking high and sleeping low.
The starting point of the route, Machame Gate is only an hour drive from Moshi town. Located on the southern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro, Machame Gate will lead you to the top along the exciting footpath, featuring tropical forests and diverse ecosystem. You will finish the trek in the Arctic desert in the summit area.
Camps along the trek are favorably located for a smooth and gradual acclimatization. On the 3rd day, Machame Route converges with Lemosho and Umbwe at Barranco camp.
While, it is possible to complete the trek in 6 days, we recommend 7 days for Machame route because it makes it easier to acclimatize and helps you get ample rest for the climb, maximizing your chances of reaching the top.

Our final cycling day involves a climb up the escarpment of the Great Rift Valley, leading us to the spectacular, UNESCO World Heritage listed, Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Here we have another full-day jeep safari, affording the chance to see the Big Five and many other animals in one of Africa’s most scenic reserves. The tour ends with a transfer back to Kilimanjaro International Airport.
