After a briefing and welcome dinner in the revitalized old-world elegance of Sofia, our riding begins in the foothills of the Balkan Mountains, and we soon delve into a little-known part of Europe along the Vit River, stretching our legs with some challenging ascents. Reaching Chiflik, relax in the thermal baths for which Bulgaria is famous. The next day, follow a Roman road across Beklemeto Pass, Bulgaria’s highest, and take in the view before cruising down through forested countryside into Koprivshtitsa, a living monument to 19th century Bulgaria. After a night in this ambience, pedal among remnants of ancient Thrace, visiting millenia-old sacred sites and a modern winery, before reaching Plovdiv, where we spend the evening in its immaculate town centre of preserved theatres, mosques, and public baths. We then enter the Rhopode Mountains of Bulgaria’s remote southern frontier. Exploring monasteries and fortified villages, transition to the natural beauty of the marble Trigrad Gorge and the underground waterfall nearby before arriving at a welcoming local hotel. This trip helps to unravel some mysterious veil of the Balkan countries. The 7 countries we visited have so much histories to see with so many breathtaking sceneries of the old towns/cities, great traditional cultures, old historical architectural buildings of mosques, monasteries, churches and fortresses...etc., lots of very wonderful places and rich experiences for travellers to see with their own eyes.

I enjoyed this trip, it has been on my bucket list for awhile. I thought group was to large 17 people instead of the usual 12. The best part of the trip was Romania where this is where we were the longest. We got to really enjoy the county. The wine vineyard was the best and staying overnight was the highlight of the trip. Jan was the best guide to handle 17 individuals.

The trip was absolutely wonderful. Julian Perry is so enthusiastic and so so knowledgeable about the wildlife and flowers of the Rodopi mountains it is impossible not to have a great great holiday. The hotel is comfy and the food is delicious and Mari and her team can’t do enough to make sure you enjoy your stay.

Faultless organisation throughout, from the warm hospitality of the Family Hotel Yagodina, its excellent and plentiful local food, to varied walks through deep forests, sunlit meadows, mountain tops. The leader’s knowledge of the area is second to none and he is generous with his knowledge of the wildlife you may encounter and sharing his understanding of this mysterious landscape, its history and myths, its people and way of life. One of the best Exodus trips I’ve ever been on, highly recommended. Thank you.
