Our tour manager, John Pham, made the adventure exciting. His insight into the 4 countries we visited was outstanding. Every place we visited was insightful and his narrative had us prepared for the visit. Water puppet show, Angar Wat at sunrise, celebrating birthdays, basket boat rides on the Mekong Delta, Chu Chu tunnels, waterfalls, floating markets, temples and the reclining Buddha were just a few of the adventures we experienced. Tour was very different than we imagined.

Severely hurt on the motorcycle (Vespa) progressive dinner … driver was inexperienced and did not lock Vespa for me to dismount - causing me to fall hard on my back on concrete with Vespa falling on top of me!!! Due to severity of motorcycle falling on top of me, I am asking for a refund of the trip!!

A fascinating and enlivening adventure

In a couple of action packed weeks we were able to experience the extraordinary variety of the Vietnamese landscape and culture, including beautiful coastal and mountain vistas, lively cities, colourful and inspiring temples, historic sites, engaging cultural events and wonderful food.

Our guide Dion was excellent. He was knowledgeable, gave us good information about Vietnam, was supportive and become aware of people’s requirements etc. He was essentially good when flooding became a problem for following the trip plan and quickly made the appropriate arrangements to change the trip plans to make it even better.

Our guide was excellent - well-informed, and helpful. Nothing seemed too much trouble. He also got us quickly and resourcefully out of what could have been a tricky situation in Hoi An when it flooded. A flight to Hanoi and an alternative to our original schedule were quickly arranged, and the 50k pedal around Ninh Binh and a 'Homestay' lunch turned out to be quite the highlight of the trip! Ha Long Bay is ridiculously over-touristed. Nice little boat, great food, but the excursions were rather horrific. could there be a less frenetic alternative?

An amazing experience! Vietnam is a beautiful county and contiki is an incredible way to see it! our trip manager was incredible and knowledgeable and often went out of his way to make sure we were all happy and enjoying ourselves (and eating our way through Vietnam!). I would recommend this trip to anyone as it covers the cities, land and seas in an incredible country - for a low cost. The ‘budget’ hotels were incredibly of an high standard and often exceeded our expectations. The included activities were incredible - especially the cycling in Hoi A which allowed you to view the city from a different perspective.

Hanoi — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Explore the cultural side of Hanoi at the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum or see a performance of traditional music or opera. Shop for crafts and souvenirs in the Old Quarter where streets are arranged by trade, or in one of the fifty or so markets throughout the city. Experience the city’s food scene with a dish of pho bo (beef noodle soup) from a street food stall.

    Tour Highlights

    • The Temple of Literature is a Confucian temple founded in 1070 and was Vietnam’s first university.
    • Tran Quoc Pagoda is one of the oldest temples in Hanoi. Built in the 6th century BC, the temple is more than 1400 years old.
    • Hanoi’s Old Quarter is home to artisan workshops and is the perfect place to shop for unique gifts. Be prepared to haggle.
    • The Museum of Ethnology tells the story of Vietnam’s ethnic minorities with exhibitions of art, textiles and architecture (including life-size traditional homes).
    • Hoa Lo Prison is a notorious French prison used during colonial times and later to hold US prisoners of war when it was famously referred to as the 'Hanoi Hilton.'

    Travel Tips

    • Visit Hanoi in Spring (February to April) or Autumn (September to November). Summer (May to August) is the rainy season, and you can expect daily rain showers around this time.
    • Be cautious of counterfeit goods for sale. Fake silk, pearls and designer clothes are all commonly sold in Hanoi.
    • Exchange currency in the gold and jewelry shops of the Old Quarter rather than in the banks – you’ll get a better rate.
