Most Amazing Trip

My partner and I worked with the local travel specialist to book a 10-day trip in Uganda, that included a gorilla trek and a visit to Queen Elizabeth National Park. We had the most amazing time! David and Joseph made everything extremely easy for us. We explained our preferences for the trip and they made everything come together very easily and exactly the way we wanted it. Actually they exceeded our expectations. David is a very talented and safe driver, even when the roads got muddy or really precarious, we always felt completely safe with him. David also is extremely knowledgeable and easy to get along with, he was regularly checking in with us about our comfort level and interests. I would highly recommend this travel expert and would definitely work with them again in the future.

Introducing Uganda

Uganda boasts a wide range of natural attractions that few are aware of. It is one of just three countries in the world where it is possible to encounter gorillas in their natural habitat and is also home to Lake Victoria, Earth’s largest tropical lake. Other highlights of this country include safari experiences in expansive wildlife reserves and the chance to go birding in Lake Bunyoni.

When to go to Uganda

Broadly speaking, Uganda’s climate is divided into dry and wet seasons. The former extends from June to September and again from December to January. This is when traveling is easiest, as forest paths are clear and it is easy to spot creatures on the plains.

The country sees a significant amount of rain between March and May and also in the months of October and November. Few travelers head for Uganda during these months since forest tracks get washed out and animals scamper for shelter. Learn more.

How long to stay in Uganda

If all you want is to spot gorillas, then a three-day trip to Bwindi should do the job. However, to fully enjoy safari experiences in Queen Elizabeth or Kidepo, you will be looking for itineraries that last at least one week. Ten days mean there is no need to rush away from the cultural attractions of Kampala, while any sojourn lasting around two weeks allows you to throw in a couple of days on the beaches of Lake Victoria.

Must-visit destinations in Uganda

The Rwenzori Mountains on the eastern slopes of Mount Stanley – Africa’s third-highest peak – are a must for anyone heading for Uganda. Culture vultures should not miss out on the collections of Kampala’s Uganda Museum, while those keen to experience the ultimate safari need to look no further than Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you can spot tree-climbing lions, elephants, and hippos. A gorilla trekking trip to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest cannot be missed out on any Uganda holiday.

Head for Murchison Falls to see the force of the Nile funneled through a tiny break in rocks and round off your jaunt in the Ssese Islands of Lake Victoria, where authentic fishing villages rub shoulders with forests full of chimpanzees.

I got into guiding in Rwandan jungles because it was my passion; I was born and raised at my parents’ home in a place near Akagera National Park, one of Rwanda’s national parks. I always saw guides and tourists passing by and it attracted my ambition... Read more

The Big 5: Everything You Need to Know
Uganda

The Big 5: Everything You Need to Know

The Big 5 refers to five African game animals: the African lion, the African leopard, the African elephant, the Cape buffalo, and the rhinoceros. These animals were originally called the Big 5 not for their size, but for the level of difficulty and danger big-game hunters faced when tracking and hunting these animals on foot. Bringing down one of these big five animals won the hunter a trophy, therefore making them the most sought-after African animals in the big-game hunting world. Over one hundred years ago, these five animals were abundant. American president Theodore Roosevelt himself embarked on an African hunting expedition and was quoted as saying the “African elephant would never become extinct” due to the sheer number he encountered. Flash forward to the current day and most of the Big 5 animals are currently listed as “vulnerable” or “endangered” species. Although hunting of all these animals is still allowed to some degree, Africa has put strict laws in place to protect and conserve each species. However, poaching has been and continues to be a concern. Nowadays, African safari operators and local hunting guides borrow the term Big 5 when marketing their tours and services. Visitors and big-game hunters who come to these African reserves will experience what it’s like to see these regal and majestic animals in the wild on their massive reserves or even experience the thrill of hunting one. In either case, it’s an accomplishment that is on many traveler’s bucket list.
