Explore the magical archaeological site of Bonampak
Discover the Yaxchilan archaeological site buried deep in the Lacandon Jungle
Hike through the Lacandon jungle with the chance to see local flora & fauna
Step back in time with the Bonampak & Yaxchilan 2D/1N tour, a two-day archaeological adventure deep in Mexico’s lush jungle. Perfect for history buffs and curious explorers, this small group trip explores the awe-inspiring Mayan ruins of Bonampak and Yaxchilan—famed for their vibrant frescoes and mysterious stelae. Journey along the Usumacinta River, spot jungle wildlife, and enjoy expert-guided tours that bring ancient civilizations to life. What sets this tour apart is its access to lesser-known archaeological sites, offering a rare glimpse into the region’s past amid breathtaking scenery. For those yearning for culture and discovery, this trip is a must.
I liked the ruins, but I wish we had more time there. The drivers and guide on the walk did not speak English, which is not their fault, but it did complicate things. The stay in the Lacandon village was advertised as ‘learn about the culture of indigenous Lacandon people’, but there was none of that, in my opinion. I did not feel particularly welcome to be honest. It made me wonder if the people of the eco-camp should maybe consider a career change, because working with tourists does not seem to be something they really enjoy. The surroundings were beautiful and the swim at the waterfall was great though. After lunch we had to wait for the van back to Palenque for three hours, although in the description it was said we would drive back ‘after lunch’. The time-frame here is open to interpretation, I guess. I have to stress that the experience was not overall negative, but there most definitely is room for improvement, especially regarding the overnight stay in the village.
