A really excellent trip. In just over a week we had game drives in several different environments (forest, open plains, the Ngorongoro Crater) and had some truly magical experiences. Visiting the Olduvai Gorge to learn about humans' early ancestors was a moving experience. Our visit to a Maasai village helped us to see and understand something of their way of life. We stayed mainly in luxury tented camps (Tortillis Camps), which were spotlessly clean, very comfortable and run by a team of very helpful staff.

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect as safari tours seem expensive, and I kept wondering if it would really be worth the cost. But it absolutely was. From the first day I knew I’d made the right choice. Every game drive felt like a new adventure. One morning we watched a group of baby elephants playing in the dust while their mothers stood nearby. Later, we spotted a hippo yawning near a watering hole. So close we could see its giant teeth! And the sunsets? Incredible.
Our guide was excellent. He was friendly & funny. The group dynamic was easy and fun. We had a mix of people: a couple celebrating their anniversary, a solo traveler from NY, and me with a close friend. It never felt awkward or too crowded.
You don’t need to be super fit for this tour. Everything is done at a relaxed pace and was very accessible, even for folks who aren’t used to rugged travel.
If Tanzania is on your list, my advice is that you don’t overthink it. Just go. It’s 100% worth it.

A popular route to the summit of Africa's highest mountain. The Machame Route is well known as the "Whiskey Route" and one of the most popular trails on Mount Kilimanjaro, fondly known as Kili. It is reported that around 50% of trekkers use this route to ascend to the highest point in Africa and for good reason. The trail, whilst challenging, also offers spectacular vistas, ascends the Barranco wall and allows good acclimatisation opportunities. From lush rainforest, the trail rises steeply towards the Shira Plateau, providing trekkers with scenic mountain views and varying landscapes. While the ascent does not require any technical climbing, the trails are demanding and a sound level of fitness are essential pre-requisites. Mount Kilimanjaro, 'The Roof of Africa', majestically rises above the Tanzanian plains. Its lower reaches are graced with a lush rainforest and coffee farms. In its shadow sprawls the endless East African savannah – the ancestral land of the Maasai people – where elephants roam and lions stalk herds of grazing gazelles. And to the east, the gentle tides of the Indian Ocean wash up against palm-fringed beaches and historic coastal towns. Countless dirt roads radiate across this vast domain, inviting the intrepid mountain biker to get up close and personal with the richness of Tanzanian culture and wilderness.
We begin at a lodge in the western foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, our launchpad for a traverse into the savannah. After an immersive day spent in a village-stye Maasai ecolodge, we venture further east to hike to a waterfall enveloped in thick jungle. We savor fresh Arabica coffee, expertly harvested and brewed by proud Chaggu farmers, before transferring south to Mkomazi National Park. Here we go on a game drive for a hopeful chance to spot endangered black rhinos and wild dogs. Approaching the coast, we’ll delve into the mesmerizing and legend-shrouded Amboni Caves and encounter the azure waters of the Indian Ocean. We then spend our final days riding the backwaters of coastal Tanzania, overnighting in beachside accommodations and discovering vibrant maritime towns steeped in Swahili, Arabic, and colonial history. We ride through Saadani National Park, Tanzania’s only wildlife sanctuary that meets the sea, on a “safari by bike” in the territory of elephants, lions, leopards and buffaloes. The tour ends with a transfer to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s largest city.
