Covering about 330km², of which typically two-thirds is underwater, Lake Manyara National Park is a small park by African standards. However, it's also very beautiful and contains tremendous diversity of habitats, animals and especially birds.
In 1951, the enormous Serengeti National Park was declared, encompassing the present Serengeti, plus the Ngorongoro area and surrounding Crater Highlands. Today, this is split into the present-day Serengeti National Park, and the current Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The conservation area now encompasses a large area of the short-grass plains on the southern side of the Serengeti Plain and also the Ngorongoro Highlands, a range of largely extinct ancient volcanoes on the west side of the Great Rift Valley.

Spending eight nights surrounded by wild life and its beauty was a dream come true. Tanzania is very rich in both flora and fauna. We really enjoyed our safari in every national park we've visited. It was an amazing experience, the route was the right amount of time to help us acclimatise ahead of summit night and see all the stunning sites around the Kilimanjaro National Park. Our guides and G Fighters were brilliant - a big shout out to our guides James, Innocent, and Gade, along with our (more than a waiter) Elisha who?s humour was wonderful, and Chef Chewa who?s food was spectacular!

A drive-fly wildlife safari through Tanzania's magnificent National Parks. An all encompassing safari through Tanzania's magnificent National Parks. We begin in spectacular Tarangire National Park known for its elephant populations and prolific birdlife where wildlife viewing is at its best from June to October (bird watching is excellent from November to May). We then make our way to Ngorongoro Crater, where encounters with a variety of animals are guaranteed due to the large concentration of species supported by the permanent water source and naturally enclosed in the volcanic crater with its steep, densely vegetated sides. We travel by road to a Masai village and then to the world famous paleolithic site of Olduvai Gorge and Serengeti. Don't attempt this trip unless you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. And be aware that no matter how fit you are, altitude sickness can still strike you down. That's why you MUST use a reputable company like World Expeditions for a trek like this. My husband became ill on Day 3. Our trek leader was able to release a guide and a porter to get him back to Arusha and to hospital. I succumbed to a chest infection 5 days later and couldn't summit. Again, I was issued with a guide to get me safely to the next camp. Each of the 5 people in our group who did climb to the summit had a guide to ensure nothing went wrong. This was not the case for other tourists who attempted the climb. I heard stories of people wandering about alone at the top- disoriented and lost. Some groups didn't provide emergency oxygen. That meant their clients had to be dragged down the mountain, often barely unconscious.
Any travel company can be good when things go to plan. What's important is how they respond when things go wrong. And what they do to minimize the risk. World Expeditions could not have been more professional. If you're determined to climb Kilimanjaro, these are the guys you want to do it with.
