China: fantastic trip, saw the sites, are good food, learned, Howard was top notch, pace and transport was perfect and all well-timed
Japan: Hidemi was great but there was too much trudging in the rail / metro system. Koyasan and Hakone were not worth it in my opinion for the amount of work it took to get there.

Within the past decade, contemporary Chinese art has exploded onto the global arena. We will tour Moganshan Lu M50 - the center of Shanghai's modern art scene - and its trendy art colony. Once a small lane filled with vacant warehouses along Suzhou Creek, it's now home to a thriving contemporary artist community. About 100 artists in residence in the former factories and warehouses on the banks of Suzhou Creek including some of Shanghai's best known artists like Zhou Tiehai, Ding Yi, Xu Zhen and the media art collective Liu Dao. It hosts over 120 galleries and art studios. Galleries include Shangh Art, EastLink, Island6, Pantocrator and Biz Art. As we tour the area, we will meet the artists, gallery owners and discuss the major styles seen in today's Chinese art, with a focus on new trends.
I loved my tour with Lynn. Doing this tour with her was like exploring on foot with a good friend. Lynn was so informative and accommodating. Seeing the old Shanghai was pretty special and I loved all the food we tasted along the way. Thank you so much! I was in Shanghai on business and I would highly recommend this tour, I'd love to do it again with my husband and kids.
In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai was one of the most prosperous and cosmopolitan cities of East Asia, a centre of business and pleasure offering a vibrant lifestyle. On this day tour, experience the 1920’s wealthy lifestyle with your private local guide.
These decades saw the nobility of the Qing dynasty, other high-class citizens and rich, up-starters living a truly luxurious lifestyle in Shanghai. Food was always the most important part of Chinese society, and for the wealthy in the 1920s, the day always started with a delicate yam-cha breakfast, a compulsory activity for the rich. They also frequented fancy restaurants or boutique tea-houses, often with their pets (birds or crickets), and would choose their favourite dim-sum to enjoy with precious Chinese tea.
Today, you will be picked up in your hotel lobby at 7:30 am and taken to the restaurant --- Sense 8. The decoration and the food immerse you in elegant and exclusive scenes of times past— the decor of the restaurant mirrors the décor of the homes of members of the Qing Dynasty. Enjoy a range of old-school dim sum dishes like 20’s Shanghai that you can't find it anywhere else.
After breakfast, you will visit the Site-Memorial of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China. The well-protected historical architecture “shikumen”. The founder of the Communist Party started from here.
The bird market is the entertainment spot of old. In the market, people sell insects, bird, plants and fish. Here, different people with the same hobby. They all come here to pick their pets and exchange experiences!
The final stop is Yuyuan Bazaar, which is the old Ming and Qing Dynasty architecture market. There are various souvenir shops and restaurants. Here you can search for some small gifts for your family or friends or try some famous snacks if you're interested. Then, you will join a tea ceremony.
Yuyuan Garden is right next to the bazaar if you would like to visit, just let your guide know.
Shanghai, the largest city in China, is unlike any other in the world. The gateway to China promises a land of history, prosperity and mystery.
Your guided day tour of Shanghai starts as your tour guide meets you at the lobby of your hotel at the appointed time. After a warm greeting, start your journey from the Shanghai Museum. The museum, which houses a fantastic collection of ancient Chinese art, is a great introduction to Chinese heritage. Later, your guide will accompany you to the 400-year old Yu Garden.
Afterwards, leave the serenity of the garden and head to the bustling streets of Shanghai. Take a leisurely walk through the pedestrian Yuyuan market. Lunch is not included in this tour, but your guide will be happy to offer you some suggested restaurants.
You haven’t been to Shanghai, if you haven’t been to the Bund, people say. The Bund is a mile-long stretch of waterfront promenade along the Huangpu River and a reminder of China’s concession era. The stretch, with its colonial architecture and modern skyscrapers is a living museum presenting the transformation of the city. Enjoy the spectacular Shanghai skyline with an hour-long Huangpu River cruise.
Finally, visit the prosperous Nanjing Road to fully experience the city's prosperity and jolly atmosphere. At the end of the tour, your guide will escort you back to your hotel.
The French Concession was where the Good Life was to be found, along with the lovely old villas and modern apartment houses of those who lived it. We will focus on the life transitions that took place here, visit Xintiandi - site of the First Conference of the Communist Party, the French Park, Premier Zhou Enlai's Former Residence, lilongs, apartments and villas from 1915 through 1930s that were home to both local Shanghainese and to many expatriate Shanghailanders.
The walk also goes off the main streets and into the back lanes for a glimpse of small-town Shanghai life. At the end of the walk, there will be an opportunity to rest in one of Shanghai's most interesting SOHO area: Tianzifang (full of interesting designer stores, restaurants and coffee shops).
This is a leisurely guided stroll giving you insights on modern and the traditional Shanghai.
