The southern circuit of Tanzania is getting more and more popular. Although it is less frequently visited than the northern circuit, it offers a similar variety of wildlife, varied landscapes, and culture.
The Nyerere National Park is the largest in Africa, approximately the size of Switzerland and is a vast open landscape with savanna plains, woodland, and many lakes and swamps in the Rufiji valley. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 due to its diversity of wildlife and undisturbed nature.
A guided boat trip on the Rufiji River will be arranged during which you will see many majestic birds, hippos, and crocodiles, probably elephants and, if you are lucky, a Nile monitor or a pride of lions coming down to drink.
Mikumi National Park can be visited in one day from Dar es Salaam, but if you have more time, this charming park is well worth a more extended visit. First, we spend a few days in Mikumi National Park, which lies alongside the Northern border of Africa's biggest Game Reserve - the Selous Game Reserve. The open horizons and abundant wildlife of the Mkata Floodplain, the fashionable centerpiece of Mikumi, draw frequent comparisons to the more famous Serengeti Plains. More than 400 bird species were recorded, the lilac-breasted rollers, yellow-throated longclaws, and bateleur eagles joined by a host of European migrants during the rainy season.
Next, we visit Ruaha National Park, the second-largest national park in Tanzania which covers an area of about 22,000 km². It is one of Tanzania's few famous wilderness areas, whereby the experience of game viewing is spiced up by the exciting landscape and the Great Ruaha River. The park has a high concentration of elephants and magnificent mammals and a habitat for endangered wild dogs, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, elands, impalas, bat-eared foxes, and jackals.
Last, we spend a day and a half at Udzungwa, the most significant example of the Eastern Arc Mountains' natural world, which runs in a chain through the whole of Tanzania. The forest makes Udzungwa unique in East Africa, and there is no other place with unbroken series of wood stretching from an altitude of 250 meters up to more than 2000 meters.

This was an excellent Safari. The Tour was as described for style and is not for the faint hearted. We observed all of the animals and birdlife you could wish for. This was a real adventure and both my Wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The itinery could do with an update although in the grand scheme of things would not have made much difference.
