Rio de Janeiro is framed by majestic mountains of lush green that descend right down to its vibrant beaches. The unusual port of Rio de Janeiro opens up like a river mouth on the south Atlantic coast, where rock faces curl around the bay in a protective embrace. Washes of deep blues and greens are a feast for the eyes during the day. At night the glittering lights reflect off the water while an eternal samba beat thumps through the heart of the city. You do not want to miss this city on your trip to Brazil. View our Rio de Janerio tours below.

Great tour director . Peru wonderful and trip well planned. Santiago was a bit of an anti climax after leaving the wonders of Peru , however still great and Valparaiso and wine tour fabulous. Buenos Aires amazing and it would have been great to have had an extra night. Some days we had way too much food so was a bit of a waste. Maybe cut down on a couple of the dinners. The restaurant in Cusco sensational but our final dinner in Rio was terrible. It was a bit annoying having set menus with only a couple of choices especially when you read their menu online but don’t get to experience the full range of food. I understand this can be difficult for the restaurants but they should be able to cater for large groups. Our guides were all brilliant and accomodation was fabulous. Loved the hotel in Santiago but Cusco a bit of a let down. We had a very small room at Iguazú Falls. I found the room variations in the group at the same hotel could be a bit unfair but this happened only a couple of times. These are only minor points. This was an amazing trip and it is one I will remember for a very long time. Well done Lucury Gold

This was a fabulous trip, our tour leader Diego, was brilliant. He worked tirelessly to ensure we were all safe and got the best out of our time there. I travelled in October the weather was untypical, hot, cold, wet and dry, all extremes of, so I'd recommend taking a full range of clothing. Use the laundries, washing doesn't dry in the humid air. All the hotels were fine, but none had a kettle/coffee making facilities, so if it's important to you, squeeze one in your luggage. A couple of the rooms were quite small, especially for a twin share, but manageable. The travelling between towns was ok. There's lots and lots to see and do in Buenos Aires, including lots of market stalls around the Recoleta area with handmade crafts etc. The hop on/off bus helps sort out your own explorations. And Argentina's reputation for steak is well deserved! Iguazu did not disappoint, both sides were staggering. Be sure to have a waterproof phone cover. Paraty was charming and Ihla Grande a delight sadly a bit too cold for swimming. Traffic into Rio was like the M25. Rio itself is a vibrant place. Loads of places to eat, explore, far too many highlights to fit into the time available. If you can manage an extra day at each end of this trip you won't regret it. Still humming The girl from Ipanema.

This was an amazing tour. The quality, knowledge and caring from all the guides was sensational particularly . The pace was perfect with multiple night stays giving time to enjoy each location. My only critism is that although the quality of the food was fabulous there were some days that I felt there was just too much, particularly days when there was both an included lunch and dinner. The most disappointing meal was the fair well dinner in Rio. I would not recommend Luxury Gold using it again. This was the second Luxury Gold tour I have done and I will certainly look forward to another in the future. The quality is always excellent and I would recommend the tour to anyone interested in enjoying the culture and scenery of South America.

A wonderful first-class trip! Awesome itinerary, top hotels, superb concierge and all the stress of handling luggage and airport hassles taken out of our hands to make it a fantastic holiday. The guides and local tours were great. I enjoyed every minute.

The South American explorer was amazing. Lots of fun and unique experiences I wouldn’t have experienced without contiki. It was a good balance of partying and non partying. Our trip manager was also the best, he was awesome and so fun, he really looked after us. One of the guides on the Inca trail was amazing too

A very good selection of major points of interest and experiences. Particularly enjoyed the tours of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain. Iguazu Falls was spectacular, all 275 of them. We had an excellent group of fellow travelers. Our Travel Director was very knowledgeable, had an excellent sense of humor and kept everything on schedule.

Rio de Janerio - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Travel Highlights

  • The Copacabana beach is a 4 km of pure energy on a stretch of sand that separates the city from the ocean, grab a caipirinha from a local vendor and watch the local kids show off their soccer skills or lay a towel down and soak up the Rio de Janeiro sunshine with some of the world’s most beautiful people.
  • Located atop Corcovado mountain, Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) is a must-see. Take the cable train from Parque da Tijuca.
  • Experience Samba like never before at Pedra do Sal in the Saúde neighbourhood.
  • Reach the top of Pão de Açúcar at sunset for the best view of Rio around. The cable car there is an experience in itself.
  • For the best photo-opportunity in town, head to Lapa and climb Selarón’s mosaic stairway.

Travel Tips

  • If you plan to visit for Carnaval, book well in advance. Accommodation fills up quickly and prices are also higher at this popular time of year.
  • Buses are a common mode of transport, though if you want one to stop for you then you’ll have to wave it down. Yellow seats on buses are reserved for elderly, disabled or pregnant women - but tourists aren’t often aware of this!
  • If you’re on a budget, try some delicious Brazilian street food or opt for a ‘por quilo’ vendor where you pay per kilo.
  • Payments by card transactions are easy.
