Many expect a holiday in Madrid to be a soberer affair than its easy-going competitor Barcelona. However, Madrid is a low-key party place with late dinners and lively bars keeping locals and visitors up until the early hours. Set against a beautifully preserved historical backdrop, Madrid knows how to appreciate the finer things in life.

It hit a majority of highlights of Spain and Portugal. Patrick our tour guide I believe made a big difference He added so much to the itinerary with his stories and information about each stop.

Insights trip to Spain and Portugal was indeed the best. First class accommodations, motor travel, silted, tours unique stops and the food. Our travel director and tour bus drivers the best I have experienced in 20 years of travel.

Well balanced with a mixture of history, culture, geography, local sites and traditions and well paced with a number of two night stops and a couple of restful days in the Costa del Sol. The optional tours were mostly enjoyable. I would change the Cascais trip to perhaps Sintra. The hotels were of a good standard but the included dinners in Madrid and Barcelona ( maybe my choices) were average.

This was a wonderful tour where we not only were lucky enough to see and experience some wonderful sights and experiences, but with a wonderful tour guide in Bec Sanderson who was a wealth of information. Being driven around & assisted on & off the bus by Joao made a great trip even better. The coach, hotels provided meals etc were very nice. We were also lucky to be a part of a beautiful group of people touring with us. The local guides added an extra dimension to our tour too.

A great trip. Very tiring as you are on the go everyday. Most if the Hotels were great except for the one in Granada. Definitely not an option. The driver and Tour Director were great and the TD was informative. Service in Spain was at times not great. At time certain waiters are rude and dismissive. Overall a great tour and a trip worth repeating with Trafalgar. Thank You, From the Moodley Family

For an Aussie, it's a step back into the past. I was enriched just to see the decorated buildings and the statues, each signifying memories. The natural beauty of the countryside was also worth seeing. I really loved understanding the influence of different religions and peoples over the centuries - especially the evidence we saw that at times they accepted each other instead of trying to destroy.

Madrid - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Travel Highlights

  • Many visit Madrid just for the Museo del Prado, one of the world’s most established art galleries with a vast collection of 7000 paintings.
  • Picnic amongst the pale marble statues and swaying greenery of the Parque del Buen Retiro.
  • Visit Madrid’s Plaza Mayor for a wide-open space to breathe in amongst the city’s tight side streets.
  • Take a tour to Madrid’s Plaza de Toros Monumental de Las Ventas to learn about the Spanish tradition of bullfighting.
  • Peruse the flea market at El Rastro on Sunday mornings.
  • Grab a bite to eat at Plaza de Santa Ana and start your night in this bustling square.
  • Watch a Real Madrid game.

Travel Tips

  • Lunch menus are cheap in Madrid and are so feasting at lunch time is a good way to save money.
  • Most museums are free on a certain day or at a certain time, plan ahead and save yourself an admission fee.
  • Madrid’s metro system is easy and efficient. Make the most of it!
  • A sit-down meal can take as long as three hours, so plan accordingly.
  • Many restaurants don’t have English menus, so learning a little Spanish will go a long way.
